View Full Version : Book of the Destroyer: Destroyer v. Takofanes

I liked The Book of the Destroyer, but I'm not really the "post a review" type. One nice teaser: I was pleasantly surprised to see a reference to this thread (http://www.herogames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11399) on page 198. Many found the thread irritating (including, apparently, Lord Liaden, the thread starter, who eventually requested it be locked), but I was actually somewhat fond of it.
Hopefully this will get someone else interested enough to make the purchase.

OTOH if something useful came out of that thread, that might slightly soothe my shame.

When one of the guys in the game group got the book, he read that section to us ... and as most of the group at least lurk here, most everyone got a laugh.
There were a lot of great little touches like that in the book. It has become one of my favorites.

I think the phonetic pronunciation of Takofanes' name is printed in one of the books.

Generally agreed, and especially for foreign/fictional words and names; but in Takofanes' case, his entry in Conquerors, Killers, And Crooks actually does spell his name phonetically, as Steve transcribed it above.
I know that Tuala Morn includes a pronunciation guide for all those Gaelic-derived words, and thank the gods for that, because you'd never guess how to pronounce Gaelic from how it's spelled.

Canonically, they have not met. The book makes a reference to message board threads debating the issue, and there's a very dry line about what conclusions can be drawn from such threads.
I think you can probably guess the general nature of the line, but I don't want to spoil it (further) for those who haven't seen the book.

Also, it does say that Dr. Destroyer has... developed a force field which he thinks is "attuned" to offer maximum protection against magic. If he knows he's likely to engage Takofanes, he'll install it in his armor. It even gives game terms: Force Field (5 PD/5 ED/20 Power Defense/20 Mental Defense), Costs 0 END.

Which is why Tualan isn't Irish or Gaelic -- I deliberately change the spelling to make the words easier for English speakers to pronounce, and to "Fantasy-ize" them a bit. Believe me, Tualan's nothin' compared to the real thing. ;)

Concerning the "Patented Doc Destroyer anti-lich force field", wouldn't it just be easier to send in robots with squirt bottles filled with holy water? Y'know, considering Takky's Susceptibility and all that?

That sounds a little low-class for Doctor D. I would expect something more like him designing a Celestial Mega-Cannon for him to use. Just vaporize the whole area that the Arch-Lich is standing on with holy energies sent down from orbit.

Wouldn't that require Zerstoiten to put faith in something other than himself and his technology?

1) Dr. D has to know about and believe in such a vulnerability
2) Even if he did that's an extremely Un-Destroyer like tactic
3) The Evil Taco could probably lay waste to an army of robots before they even unholstered their squirt bottles.

Takofanes' Susceptibility and Vulnerability to Holy stuff are listed as Uncommon. To me that implies you'd need rarer and more potent artifacts, and truer faith, than just generic holy water in the hands of Joe Goes-Through-The-Motions-Churchgoer, to get a rise out of him.

LOL I think you mean that you learn to hate people when you work in a Call Center. Hell, it's the same way when you work retail esp any Customer Service areas. You see people at their worse being jerks just because they think that being a jerk gets you something.

It doesn't?
Because as near as I can tell, it does. And then they go away and explain to their friends how they did it.

It gets the CS person to grudgingly give them something. What they don't notice is the nice, but firmly insistant person who gets so much more because they were being nice. CS people really like nice people and try their best when they get someone who is reasonable and nice. I always go out of my way for a nice person and have observed that most CS people do the same thing.

I don't rant and rave, I don't raise my voice, I don't get personal or nasty or insulting... I just don't back down either. ;) I find that going into the situation with the mindset that "Of course there's a solution, we just need to find it," is a lot more helpful than going in with the mindset of "I'll be such a PITA that you'll placate me just to get rid of me."
Granted, the latter may end up being the solution that the CS rep chooses to find, but that's not my assumption going in...
