Wizard War! Dispel as an defensive action.

Two Wizards throwing spells at each other. It is a great mental picture. And in order to expand on that I was wondering what you all thought of making a Dispel attempts as an Defensive action that a Wizard can Abort to, just like a Dodge or Parry.

Thoughts.

I would most certainly allow Abort to Dispel in a campaign such as the one you described. They do it all the time in The Wheel of Time novells.

Alternately or in addition to, consider Triggered Dispels.

I've already started a thread on this - you can see it: here (http://www.herogames.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=6447).

Something I've considered doing is creating a new advantage: Abortable (+ 1/4) - it has the equivalent of a stop sign on it - requries GM permission, based on the special effect.

I'm pretty sure you can already do this.

So Aborting to Dispel is not technically legal IIRC.

But its certainly a subject to GM's preference sort of thing, like everthing else in FRED, and 1 of those things that seems reasonable to change.

I would certianly allow the abort to dispel action. as long as you followed all the other rules for aborting an action.

I have explicitly allowed this in the one FH campaign I ran. Of course you could only abort to dispel attacks. You couldn't for example abort to dispel a Force Field so a faster teammate could get a shot in on an undefended villian. I found it to be in genre, not at all unbalancing, and gave mage on mage combat some real flavor.
