I've just started a new Champions campaign, and I'm undecided on something: how much experience to give out.

For this game I'm thinking about trying an experiment and giving the equivalent of about 10 xp per session.

I know its pretty excessive, but I've run multi-year games before. I have a game that's been going for about 2 years now, and I've had another game run for about 4, before I moved and it ended.

I also tend to be fairly, picky about balancing characters.

Has anybody else tried this or been in a game like this?

I haven't handed out 10 exp at once yet but I just wanted to point out that even just handing out 3-5 exp a session (I thought that was generous) they add up very quickly. In the 6 weeks my campaign ran (we switch off between game masters every 6 weeks) they accumalted 25 points. If you group games weekly and you're the only one running that's 520 points for a year (assuming no breaks) added to base points/disads.

I think 5 is the most I've ever got. We always had a sucky group so 2-3 was the norm.

I should add that this is an every-other week game, as opposed to a weekly game. So with other commitments and potential conflicts, I'm only expecting about 20 games/year.

Most of them are also very new to the game system, and I wrote up most of the characters.

My guideline is as follows:

1XP per session (so a three session adventure is 3XP)
1 XP for accomplishing the overall objective
1 XP for noteworthy roleplaying
1 XP for misc bonuses

I award XP at the end of the adventure, not each session.

If I set it up so that a character gets the training I want him to have in game, I "award" the points and it doesn't come out of their XP (ie, if I send him on a parachuting course or make him spend a week getting a language fam).

At this rate, a game that runs every two weeks, with three sessions per adventure will see 34-50 XP over the course of a year.
