In case you haven't seen it, there's a rather nice nine-part history of RPGs here (http://ptgptb.org/0001/history1.html) courtesy of Places to Go, People to Be.
There is of course mention of a little something called Champions! :)

its a very well done series of articles... sadly too many people actually listened to Dr. Radecki and the folks at BADD, whats interesting is no mention is made of the fact that Dr. Radecki lost his license to practice in Illinois, due to various shenanigans unrelated to BADD. I was at a wargaming convention he showed up to protest at that didnt even have any D&D games running, and he was removed by the police after being politely asked to leave. he wasnt exactly the most ethical person it seems.

Had to laugh at how dated the article is. Another decade has passed since it was written. The author mentioned the Fuzion Champions as if it were just happening (and it was as of the article) instead of old, nearly forgotten news. Would love to see what he would have to say about the last ten years.

I remember I had a book on the history of DoD wargames that mentioned the Pentagon actually contacting Avalon Hill and mentioned D&D, but only in passing.

I don't know if it's the same book, but The Complete Wargames Handbook by Jim Dunnigan tells that story as well.

I hope that is true. It's a great story and one that would mark the earliest moments... RPG's big bang if you like! :)

Ok, so after a little digging it seems someone's written the following on wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Wesely)... "David Wesely (born March 15, 1945) is a wargamer, board game designer, and video game developer. Dave Arneson credited him with coming up with the idea of the role-playing game"
Plus there's an interview with Dave Arneson himself in Pegasus magazine #1 by Judges Guild which mentions the "Brownstine game". http://www.judgesguild.net/guildhall/pegasus/pegasus_01/interview.shtml
It seems to be true! Nice. :)
