I was out searching for a printable hex map and I found this:
http://autorealm.sourceforge.net/index.html

It's a free mapping program. I'm very impressed with it and I've only been using it for about 5 minutes. I may later discover it's failings, but I thought I'd pass it on.

Thank you for the link SirWilliam. I have been using the program for some time.. and I too am very impressed with it. I own CC2 (with the various add-ons for city designer, character artist, dungeon designer), but mostly use autorealm. It is quite intuitive and does what I need for it to do.

Is there any mapping software (free or otherwise) for Linux?

Personally I like Grid, makes the old style TSR maps :)

I have to send a shout out to Autorealm too. I really like it. The maps in the Champs adventure I submitted in Digital Hero were done in Autorealm. ;)

Well, the above SW is GPL'd and source available. In my copious spare time, I'll probably download the src and see what it takes to compile.

On the sourceforge page it does mention that a Linux port is/was planned, but the date on that info was quite a while ago.

If it is simple enough, perhaps Wine can handle it for your needs under Linux...
