I can get HD to launch fine on my Windows machine. This problem only seems to happen on my Linux box.

I launch HD and everything goes as expected until it gets to this message: "Loading template...reading dissads section".

Now, if I <alt-tab> I can see that there's an error message trying to display: "Modifier not allowed on ability". However, I cannot get this error message to come to the front so that I can clear it. In fact, the HD splash screen stays on top of everything on my Linux box, unlike with windows. As a result, HD just hangs and I have to kill the Java process.

Also, I have HD configured to not load any characters or templates on startup, so the only template it should be trying to load is Main.hdt. The trace.log doesn't show anything from today, only message from when I ran it on my WinXP machine yesterday.

I've attached a screen shot of the loading screen: HD_load.gif
and my appPrefs.xml and trace.log files: hd_files.zip

The trace.log posted is from your windows machine, not your linux machine. If you are sharing an installation between the two machines -- don't.

The appPrefs.xml file is also from your windows machine. If that is the file that your linux machine is using, it will be a large part of the problem.

Actually, I'm having the same issue with Hero Designer on Ubuntu (latest release as of Feb 09) - the problem is that the directory path commands don't work, so the script is trying to execute from within the desktop directory.

If I right click on the HDv3.jar file and run it with a java vm, it works fine.

The script included with the installation is also wrong. If I figure out how to fix this, I'll post the fix. If anyone else knows, please let me know. Its buggin me.

Is there a post or a faq somewhere that shows how to do a unbuntu install for HD//

I just cant seem to be able to do it.

I am just starting using Ubuntu so my skill in using the system is pretty slim

Thanks

Installing HD onto any machine is the same regardless of platform. I just toss my copy of HD onto a flash drive and run it from that.

Just make sure you have all the latest Java bits installed on the Ubuntu Machine.
For reference I have run it on Ubuntu with no problems from a flash drive.

Without absolutely knowing what is going on, I'd guess that you have some other Java besides Sun Java as the default Java.

Run sudo update-java-alternatives -l at the console. If Sun Java is not the default, then you'll need to switch it. Been a while since I have done it, but I remember it being easy.

Remember that you'll have to install Hero Designer to your user account, as per the license agreement.

Try https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Java for more information. It has two separate sets of instructions for early versions of Ubuntu and more recent ones so read carefully. Good luck.

I did install sun java on my desktop Ubuntu box and got HD to work

My laptop is using puppy linux right now and I have not found a sun java to run on it yet.

This is the result of a Google search. I don't have Puppy so I cannot comment on how well it works.
