I bought the AFMBE main rule book a couple years ago and it seems like a decent set of rules for zombies. I was looking at the AFMBE website and they have obviously been busy. I'm not particularly interested in the various genre books, I'm pretty simple in my zombie horror, I don't really need to move it to the wild west or Hong Kong, but I was wondering if any fans of the game could recommend any of the supplements for a standard issue zombie game (Dawn of the dead, Dead Rising, Left 4 dead etc).

Thanks

I love left for dead
it is a fast zombie type game(28 days later style of zombies)
while I prefer slow "have to shoot them in the head"
I find the game well balanced
more is going to be added so I may get my slow zombies shoot them in the head style

If you haven't played it check out Dead Rising, it is a nice combination of the original Dawn of the Dead and Kolshak the night stalker. You are a free lance journalist who gets himself into a shopping mall full of old school slow moving zombies. You get points for getting good photos so you find yourself having to decide between just blasting zombies and getting a great photo. Lots of missions from rescuing others trapped in the mall, helping mysterious government agents and trying to solve the mystery of the zombie source. Very different from Left 4 Dead, but stil lots of fun. I'm also hoping for more from the Left 4 dead people even if they just add more maps.

This is probably a reasonable time and place to link to William Mistretta's fine HERO web sourcebook for gaming in the world of George Romero's "Living Dead" movies: Twilight of the Dead (http://www.yamoslair.com/totd.html).

I've only ever played at cons, but it seems to be a pretty good game. In one AFMBE game I played, the GM had added an interesting new mechanic. When you fail a Fear check (or whatever they're called), he would give you three choices: Fight, Flee, or Freeze. You had to answer quickly (within maybe 5-10 seconds) or he would choose for you.

Fight and Flee are pretty self-explanatory. If you choose Fight, you'll try as hard as you can to put down whatever it was that threatened you, using whatever tools you have on hand. If you Flee, you'll run for dear life away from the threat. These, he told us, are physiological reactions. They're what humans are programmed to do when faced with something terrifying.

Freeze, on the other hand, is a psychological reaction. It's what happens when you suppress your Fight and Flee instincts. If you choose Freeze, the GM takes temporary control of your character. Chances are, you'll stand there and blubber while the monster tears out your throat. Other options are to do something completely irrational, like attack one of your teammates, or open the door to let the bad guy in.

Despite his describing the effects of choosing Freeze (which are never, ever good), the GM told us that people select it at least half the time when they failed their Fear roll.
