I went to the first one back in March, and had a really good time--even if I was dozing off every ten minutes because I was working second shift Friday night and drove up very early Saturday morning, and it was raining all day--it was still worth it. This was organized by Luke Gygax as a tribute to his father, who founded this marvelous hobby which we have enjoyed for so many years, and continue to enjoy today.

I know there are more than a few HEROes in the northern Illinois/southern Wisconsin area, and it would be nifty to get together for some "old school" superheroics. If nothing else, it's a great way to celebrate the beginnings of role-playing.

It's my understanding that registration is limited to a maximum of 350 players, so if you're going to go, now's the time to register. I plan to be there, and I hope some of you can be there as well.

Nice! Were you ever at his house? I read some posts at the Kenzerco forums--apparently he used to hold parties on the front porch of his house, with gaming and barbeque grilling and all sorts of nifty stuff. He didn't mind talking to strangers, from what I understand.

I hope to see you there, too!

Sure, I played in his Thursday group for a few sessions (but couldn't make the commitment). His wife Gail and I are still friends (we worked together for a short while), and I've been trying to get Alex into my Champs game for some time now. :)

Funny story... I was a gamer long before we moved to Lake Geneva. One evening, shortly after we were settled, my wife and I took a stroll through the neighborhood. We wandered past Gary's house (I had no idea whose house it was) and there were a bunch of guys on his porch having a good time. My wife said "oh look, they're playing poker." But one glance told me otherwise... They were gaming.

A week later I basically barged into Gary's home (still not realizing it was Gary Gygax) and asked if I could join them...

Even after I dropped out of the Thursday game my wife and I would always get a hearty wave from Gary as we walked past his porch on Thursday nights.

Gary was great, a good neighbor. He is missed.

Hmmmm.......Keep wondering why the Garycon stuff never manages to stay visible in the Conventions section. One can always find it with a search but it's never out in the open like the other Con's are. Shame. Was a great time, and attended by a lot of the great folks from "The Day" and it was a blast. Definitely on my list of things to do next year. Dug out the HERO books at one point and about got Mobbed, but the never ending Buck Rogers game and Discussion with Flint Dille occupied most of my Con time so I didn't get to do the HERO stuff I had planned. Next year though. Best convention experience I would have to say, that I have had since the second Gencon/Origins team up.

Glad you had a great time. I wasn't able to make it myself--perhaps next year. I saw some of the pics--looks like they found a really great venue for the gathering.

Yeah the Lodge was good. Didn't look like much from the front, but then apparently it's not supposed to. Only bad thing was the ATM machine broke so if you wanted cash you had to run back into town a bit. Other then that, was like the good old days, heh. Games food beer and folks.
