Cheshire Cat enters the picture and develops a crush with the in the women in the group. He is not necessarily a member of GRAB yet (tBD). His power provides a reason for introducing Mechanon. Cheshire’s teleport is a very crude way to travel dimensionally. It leaves small tears in the dimensional fabric that does, over time, heal itself. But these tears have to potential to let other things through. These tears are like squiggly lines which are dark and create a weird “tingly” feeling when touched. They generally dissipate after a few hours but some have lasted as long a 1 day.
Mechanon comes through as an “egg” or “seed” of sorts. These eggs were seeded through the Aether for some purpose. It may be that the seeds were released by a mechanonistic race who seeks to dominate other worlds. Perhaps, more likely, the intent was a weapon of war against another world/race and this particular seed fell into the “crack in the sidewalk” left by Cheshire Cat’s teleportations.
Mechanon will start off small, perhaps the size of a small cat and will have 4 legs and two arms. He will take this time to learn about the race that inhabits this world. Once he feels safe enough he will show up and befriend the super group, appearing to be ‘cute’ and “friendly” much like the creatures for Gremlins or perhaps even ET. But as he gains conficence he will become bolt and assertively testing an acquiring. His main objective is to gain access to major technology/computer infrastructure. Once he gains access, the fun begins. He will seem to have disappeared for awhile, perhaps even leaving the old body behind, and then surface weeks or months later – in a much more powerful form.

I like this idea. Has a very comic book feel to it. I like it a lot more than the origin that he "officially" has.

I will need to come up with a weaker form than is given in 5E. Perhaps even working it so that plots of his which succeed give him large amounts of XP. (stealing certain technologies, etc).

Aside from my not enjoying the origin they gave him in Book of the Machine the books awesome as far as content goes. Well worth looking at if you want ideas for a weaker version of him and some other ideas and there's a lot of bases.

Perhaps the Mechanon seeds are the Aethers' way of "self repair". They are equal to leukocytes and such in an animal body. And when the "body" of the Aether is damaged it produces these "seeds" to perform repairs. However, if they enter/interact with a different reality (ie: fall thru the cracks and enter the campaigns primary dimension) they take on the aspect of what they perceive as the "primary life form" in it. With all the tech around it would be reasonable for at least one of seeds to take the form of a gadget. Once it does, it begins to see all "non-gadget forms" as the dimension being "broken" and so sets about to repair the universe by eliminating such creatures.
Of course, if more than one seed fell thru, the other seed(s) might take a different form and provide an origin story for a character or NPC in the campaign as well....:D
And one wonders what Istvatha V'han might make of such a species, given her drive to conquer all dimensions.....Hmmmm ?! :sneaky:

I have got a far amount of time to develop the WHY.
There is a possibility (albiet a small one) that Mechanon will never reach near the full power as he is in the HERO books. Instead he may be a scout that will bring about an invasion in the style of the Terminator.
I am planning for this campaign (it may never get that far) to make travel to other planets impossible via space. But traveling through the Aether as well as other "dimensional" modes is very very possible.
I see the Aether as sort of an alleyway that connects dimensions and locals. It is a dark alley and who know what lurks there. Most of the characters who do have teleport powers spend such a short time there that they will probably never realize the nature of the medium. There are more "legit" and safe means of getting from dimension/local (think of a street or a sidewalk). The access points using this method are more limited but the "DOORS" made are more stable, possibly "permanent" and is less open to unexpeted things popping out.
