View Full Version : Adobe Acrobat? Website Question

Just wondering my computer feels the need to launch Adobe Acrobat every time I come to this site. Are there pdf files that I'm not noticing?
For a while, IE was crashing about 30% of the time when Acrobat started up (at least it offered to send an error report to Microsoft ... I declined). That doesn't seem to be happening anymore.

It tries to load Acrobat when you come to the front page?

I get the Adobe Acrobat loading screen superimposed on the front page. Then it goes away, and I'm either free to continue or get "Explorer has experienced an error and must go to the corner and whimper." But Acrobat never shows up on my start bar.

And it only does it with our website?

Me too, except that the system never crashed on me.
EDIT: Yes, only on the HERO website.

Yep, it only happens here.

It's never happened on my computer, but when I used a friend's computer to connect the Adobe startup screen popped up while the main page was loading. He's got family in town this week, but I'll try to check in over the weekend and see just what he's running if you think it'll help.

Actually, it would. I would appreciate that.

Acrobat just started popping up on my machines, too. Both at home and at work. But I don't get any error.

Since I loaded the new Adobe reader v6.0, the Acrobat web client no longer works at all. Any time I hit a site with a .pdf I have to download it if I want to see it, otherwise I just get the little square with the triangle, square and circle in it. As far as Accrobat's help files are concerned it is properly configured so it should work online, it just doesn't. Has anybody else had this problem with v6.0?

I think you may actually have found the solution!
I am still using Reader v5.0 and I don't see anything about it loading when I come to the Hero Boards.
It could be that the new release of Acrobat Reader is a little more "helpful" than the previous version, (loading itself up whenever you go to a web page) and something in the Hero site is making it "show up" when it would normally be sneaking around in the background.(Maybe Hero is using its Detect power.:))
Since I "upgraded" to v5.0, I get an annoying little Acrobat pop-up whenever I open Microsoft Word.
It looks like they are piggybacking on our web browsers now.
What next?
Is Acrobat going to try to "help" when I am playing Unreal Tournament?
Gee, thanks Adobe, for sucking up a few more resources!

Checked with my friend last night.
We're both running Windows 98 and Acrobat Reader 5.0, but he's also got version 4.0 of the full Acrobat on his computer and we think that's the version that's been popping up. Could it be something in the settings? I know I turned off the automatically check for updates "feature" in my copy of Reader, don't know about him.

It happens to me too. And if I run Task Manager I find Acrobat running in the background...
If I terminate the process, it reloads itself as soon as I move to a different page on your site... and it's Acrobat loading, not Acrobat Reader (I can tell because I have Acrobat 4, but version 5 for Reader).

Wierd. It sounds like it either a conflict within the website, aadobe, or your computers themselves.
Might be helpful to Ben if you post:
1) What type of browser you are using (explorer/netscape), and waht version is it
2) Your operating system (95,98, 2000, whatever)
3) What version of adobe you have (is it reader only, the full version, and what number comes after it.)
