View Full Version : Minor Complaint with Hero Designer 6

Now, don't get me wrong, I love Hero Designer. Most of the changes made are great and help me read the characters straight out of the program easily. But...I do not like that when you double click on a power/skill/whatever it does not open them for editing. Not sure if it was intentional or not, but I'm not a fan. It's gonna take a long time (and a bunch of annoyance) to change my habits on double-clicking.
Other than that, great work as always.

It was on purpose. It took me a bit to get used to as well. Even Dan mentioned it took him a bit to break that habit.
The ability to directly alter the output though is worth it IMO.

I was all set to complain about this too...and then I noticed that double-clicking the cost or END cost still lets you edit the power. That I can live with. :)

Yup -- was just about to chime in with that little tidbit. It's really just a matter of changing where you double click for editing the ability vs. editing the output.

I wasn't sure if you'd mentioned it or not. My group just started to play HERO again, so i'm doing alot of catching up. Just broke out the HERO stuff and updated Hero Designer.
Anyways, good work as normal. And, I have to add after playing 4e D&D for a while, $25 for two years of service (and you still get to use the program after that) beats the heck out WOTCs insider tools. My group was worried it would be expensive for all of us to get licenses, but your price is amazing.
So thanks for a great program, with great service, at a great price.

Just when I train myself to click the Edit button :p

I -may- be just entirely missing this...but is it possible to get some documentation/a quick explanation about how this works? I mean, obviously when I click it, I can now edit the name of the power. But I could do that before, just by changing the name of the power in the dialog. What does this really do, please?

You can change more than just the name -- you can change anything about the output of the ability: how Modifiers are listed/displayed, the ability's construction, formatting, etc.
It's the full output that is editable, not just discrete fields.

Is it a literal text override? Does it take HTML formatting? Plus, this is the bit that you said if we change it, then make changes to the power, that isn't reflected, yes?
Sorry to be obtuse, this just seems like it -could- be a really powerful feature, and I'm trying to understand how to use it.

It will take whatever you enter -- no processing or filtering is done on the output once you decide to customize it.
And yes, that means that if you edit the Power at all (changing levels, adding or removing Modifiers, etc.) those changes will not be reflected in the output.
To undo the custom output and revert to the application's default, just clear out all text and hit enter.

Ah! Good to know! :)
