View Full Version : DH #13

It was great to get the new DH today, with all the Name the Hero winners published (mine included!). I haven't had time to look through the whole thing, but what I've seen so far looks great.
One nitpick that has me banging my head against the wall, however...my name was, as usual, misspelled. It was spelled correctly next to Psiphon's name on his character background writeup, but incorrectly in the credits and in a couple of other places in the writeup. *Sigh* I know it's a minor detail at most, but it's frustrating to see my name misspelled everywhere, especially when it was actually spelled correctly elsewhere in the same document.

Glen,
I'm putting together a revised DH tomorrow, that will be the one that goes up on the Hero site. I'll correct your name.

Glen, my real name gets misspelled all the time (and it's not that hard to remember), so I sympathize with you. Perhaps there's an echo of those two "g"s at the end of your last name at work. At least getting an advance copy has allowed you to alert Dave "On the Spot" Mattingly in time to correct it. :)
I must say that this is one issue I've really been looking forward to. The "Name the Hero" discussion made these characters sound most intriguing, especially since they're explicitly the cream of a fine crop. And I'd love to confirm my impression that they'd work well as a team that I could drop into my own campaign.

Glen, I hear you. Hero, thankfully has never done this to me, but I am frequently written as Kieth or Curtiss. No real big deal, but it happens. As long as they're close, I don't mind. The worst instance, however, was when I was asked to help run an industry* workshop and was somehow listed as "Brian Keith"
?!?!?!

Latest comment... the way Blaine fleshed out through individual drawings of the MC8 is... utterly amazing.

If its not too late for typos, in Commando Rubberbando's write up, under Background/History, the last sentence of the 3rd paragraph ends with
"...and noble."
It is supposed to read
"...and noble service in keeping with the proud traditions of the Green Berets."
If being trimmed for space, then it should at least read
"...and noble service"
or perhaps
"...and distinguished service"
which flows a little better when abbreviated.
Actually, the entire rest of the original paragraph summarizing some his service is missing. Not sure if that was intentional or not. As he had been active in many of the hotspots of the last 30 years, perhaps it was removed for Political Correctness purposes, but I thought Id point it out in case it was a mistake....
Also, the table of contents seems to be out of whack by about 2 pages on the page counts. Rubberbando starts on page 62, not 60 as listed. Maegara starts on 57 not 55, etc....

You are a gentleman and a scholar and I shall remember you in my will. Not that I'll have anything to leave, but the thought is there.
Will contributors get copies of the revised edition as well, or are we to purchase them as per usual?

That's because the internal page count for DH doesn't include the cover and the table of contents pages; p. 1 of DH is always on p. 3 of the pdf.
Took me a little while to catch on to that myself. ;)

Typo and comment:
Lady Liberty's Wards of Protection seem to have been added twice (total PD and ED should be 16 rather than 26).
Also, the +17 PRE from her badge should probably be listed under Characteristics (one of those 13/30 thingies).
Blaine: the art for her is very well done...but she looks awfully cheery for someone with a limited sense of humor. The cover pose, on the other hand, is spot-on perfect!

We do seem to have some ultra serious types and gloomy gusses on the team, don't we? :) Thank goodness for "The Sting" :)

One of the problems of designs from different people, I suppose. I wonder why people gravitated towards more serious characters, or whether that was the judges' tastes?
Glad there's one cheerful character in there. Heck. I've just realised that if there's ever an "MC-8" animated series, he's going to be the annoying "comedy" character. Yeah, like that's going to happen.
Looking back on my unsuccessful entries, there were actually some who were more miserable than the ones we got (although a couple were more upbeat). Thank heaven for small mercies.
BTW, the recipe in El Aguijón's write up (for a yellow/green/yellow striped shooter) works. I know, because I kept testing the drink until it was right. Then I tested it some more, just in case. ;)

For me, the quote was actually the first thing I came up with, which (to me) dictated Lisa's sense-of-humor impairment. Otherwise, she's actually led a relatively angst-free life.
Looking back at my other submissions, I didn't make anyone with a light tone; most were in the middle, with only one I would really call dark. Not a conscious choice, just the way it worked out.
I did like my quote for the Psiphon art though. "Bartender, a glass of your best beer. And make sure it has a large head!"

Since she has the Limitation that it takes an action to get that extra Presence, I didn't add it in like it was inherent. Under the Power write-up, it's listed as +17 PRE (30 PRE Total), so I figgered that'd be enough in this case.

Commando Rubberbando is serious because hes a gawd-damn-green-beret. But he's not "gloomy" by any means -- hes a take charge gung ho career military man. Code of the HERO and all that.
His picture looks pretty serious & determined to me on CU, so I went with that. Because stretchers are inherently silly, its always fun to depict them as being very serious. Makes for better contrast. :)
With a name like Commando Rubberbando, you expect him to be a joke character, but he's really a pretty kick-ass creditible martial artist. Should be fun in play. However -- you have to remember to really enunciate the name like that guy from the boxing matches who over pronounces everything -- "KOAH-MAN-DOOOH RUB-BER-BAAAAAAAAAAAN-DOH!" -- then hit somebody from across the room with a 12d6 "Charge" to the head or a 4d6 NND Choke Hold or something :D

Frankly, I'm feeling kind of amused AND sorry for Steadfast... working with a sorceress, a pagan diety's champion, and walking proof of the evolutionary theory. What's a poor church going boy to do? ;)

Pray? Maybe this will strengthen his faith? Perhaps he thinks he is like Job, being tested? Your point made me laugh, though.
As with Koh-Mann-Doooh Rubb-Berrr-Baaann-Doooh, Megaera and Raaktor aren't gloomy. The former is serious when there's work to be done, but I thought she'd have an intellectual sense of humour. The latter I envisaged with a sort of "zen" attitude and a quiet sense of amusement at the silliness of people (hence his teasing of his New Age followers).

:) He could see it that way. Likely he'll just hold to his faith convinced it will all make sense in the end. ;)
Since Steadfast actually has a psychological limitation showing loyality to the team, I think he''ll accept them fairly smoothly.

Good point. And I've got no right to tease, Stalker makes most other members of the team look like bundles of sunshine. :)
I am now looking at the revised/final version that Dave (A thousand thanks for your patience Mr. Mattingly ;) ) sent us.
I have to confess, my own views biasing me (As I had a hand in this one) this is my first DH that I've actually READ, and darn , I'm regretting I didn't fork over the cash for the earlier ones.

Oh, you should have seen The Keeper and Protean. One had inadvertantly caused the death of his own brother by interfering with the Russian mafia, was burn-scarred and pretended that it had been he who had died, taking up his brother's identity, thereby cutting him off from his wife and newborn baby. The other had been experimented upon/tortured solidly for three years by Teleios, came back to find his girlfriend had gone off and he got investigated by the IRS over the missing years' money.
They made Stalker look like Mike Brady.
BTW that's not a criticism. Overall, I think he was my favourite (maybe).
I have to agree wholeheartedly about DH. I think I'd been put off by the formatting on the free articles, plus my usual nervousness about purchasing downloads.

Yipes!
Okay, those options did sound grim.
And thanks for the praise of Stalker. :)
BTW, did anyone notice the excellent write up on that OTHER group of heroes? The what's their names... oh yeah, the Sentinels? :)
I'm now doubly delighted to have this issue, as I was hoping to introduce Microman to my Millennium City campaign and this REALLY fleshes him out.

Click, swish, and read.
So far, this is one of my favorite issues. All the characters are neat, well thought out and well done.
Favorite line, in Microman's write up, "Over the next few months, Microman thwarted a number of small crimes."
For some reason, that cracks me up. What, he should stop falling skyscrapers?
Of the MC-8, I'm torn between Lady Liberty and Stalker.
Kudos to Arthur for the Optional Maneuvers. I like them.
All in all, a really fine issue. I'm very happy with it.

I'm glad folks are liking Stalker :)
Gives me that warm fuzzy swelled head feeling.
While I can't pick a favorite myself, I must admit, if I were a player, I'd probably snatch up the El Aguijon character sheet.
1. I like cheerful characters sometimes.
2. I think size changing characters are neat.
3. Comic book scientists are always cool. :)
The only problem is, I can't pronounce the darn name. My one course in Spanish was over a decade ago. :o

Thanks, Hermit.
I am not 100% sure I know how to pronounce the name either. I've never studied Spanish, but it felt right! I did try speaking it when I was in Spain a couple of years ago. I think it's something like A-Gwee-Hon, with emphasis on the middle syllable, but don't quote me.
I liked all of the characters, including the Sentinels, in that issue. Props all round.
Darren Watts
Sep 5th, '03, 05:07 PM
It's Ah-gwee-hone, with a hard "g" sound in the middle syllable and depending on your accent a little or a lot of extra fricative in the h in the last. In some accents the "w" after the "g" all but disappears. dw

Aargh! I'm downloading this issue as I type this, and it's only 67% done! I hate phone modems. But it was a choice between a cable modem and purchasing my monthly dose of HERO goodness. Hope I made the right choice... ;)
Now it's up to 74%. Does anybody know any prayers to get DH issues to download faster? After reading everybody's comments here, I'm rather eager to see this issue.
(And if the download crashes in the mid-90% area, I'm gonna scream loud enough to rattle the windows across the country.)

As to Blaine's artwork, I agree wholeheartedly. He did the art for my article in DH #12, and it rocked!
I'm finishing up a submission to Haymaker! and then I can read through DH #13 and post my review. Since I never got around to submitting a character for the contest, I'll have to work hard not to color my review green with envy. :p Just kidding!
