View Full Version : Ben 10: Alien Force -Season 3 (6E)
Bloodstone
Sep 11th, '09, 03:58 PM
All new thread, all new season, all new edition!
As usual, I'll reserve the next 15 posts or so for the Alien Force gang and some of our reoccurring NPC's. Maybe I'll even get around to posting stats for Kevin this season :sneaky: Though of course his powers are once again working differently just to torment me :angst:
The big question is what aliens Ben will have access to right off the bat. From previews alone, we know he has Big Chill, Brainstorm, Cannon Bolt, Chromastone, Echo Echo, Humongousaur, Jetray and Spidermonkey.
Diamondhead is making a comeback, though "he's a little bit different than he ws before" Of course, we never saw him or Tetrax without their super suits on... Rumors are also swirling we might see Ben as Heatblast once more. That takes us up to 10 already, but wait, there's more!
Rath and Lodestar are two of the new aliens this season, but I don't know when they will show up. One or the other of them just might be the alien we saw at the end of last season with the floaty head and the spikey shoulders. We know Loadstar has some kind of magnetic powers.
No idea if Goop, Swampfire, Way Big or Upchuck will be back. I was surprised ot see Aline X still in the opening credits honestly.
Of course, since this will all be done in 6E I expect there will be a bit of a learning curve.
Anyhow, on with the show!

Powers/Tactics: Ben's skills as a hero have grown considerably over the years. He has a much stronger sense of tactics than he once did, though his pride and arrogance sometimes prevent him from working well with his teammates. While he's certainly not the brains of the operation, he's good at analyzing a combat situation and quickly coming up with a plan. His Omnitrix Master Power Skill reflects both his mastery over the device and the forms it contains (i.e. he should be allowed to use it while transformed to use his alien powers in new and creative ways).
While Ben's hand to hand combat skills are quite good, he tends to turn into an alien form at the first sign of trouble.

That's a shame. I like Chromastone.
I was rather fond of him too. I liked the Brick/Blaster combo and was looking forward to Ben figuring out how to use his powers better. There were several indications he had considerably greater control over the EM Spectrum than we ever got to see.
But he might be back.
If not, it's kind of depressing to think the Crystalsapiens have effectively been left off "the Arc" :(

We have a "modest" collection
So, do you have boys or girls?
I know when we go to the local Toy's R Us the Ben 10 section is positively overflowing with Chromastones right now (usually quite a few Swampfires too). Might be that Bandai just massively over produced them, but I strongly suspect the average parent tends to avoid buying him:
"Oh, look the Smith boy has Ben 10 toys on his birthday list... Hmm, should we get him the dinosaur man, the blue monkey or this pink rockcandy man?"
Ever wonder why we don't see more Gwen action figures, despite her being in every episode, having gone through four costume changes and having her own alien transformation?

Two boys, and the eldest saved his money for months to buy a Omnitrix or, as he calls it, "an alien watch." Lotta Ben 10 love in our home.

New toys should be shipping in October. And despite what I just said about Gwen, we actually are getting her Anodite from in either this batch or the next one. Kinda forgot about that bit of news...:o

What annoys me is that at the end of last season, Ben looked through the Omnitrix selection after the reset and said "I don't recognize any of these guys."
Then in the season premiere we got nothing but recycled aliens. Granted, the Omnitrix was broken, but the only alien we saw prior to the breakage was old and the post-breakage dial just showed last season's selection with one substitution, which was also old.
But he turned into Upchuck, who wasn't on the dial, so maybe we'll see new aliens courtesy of random transformations.

That bugged me, too. On the other hand, we don't know how much time has passed since the end of Season 2, so it's possible there was another snafu with the Omnitrix between then and now.
I'm more bothered by the fact that all the maturity Ben picked up over the last 5 years and 2 seasons has been flushed down the toilet and he's acting like a ten year old jerk again.

They should just ship her figure with Kevin's. After all, everybody else ships them together.

I will point out we never got to see his playlist before Ben and Kev started tampering with the watch. Afterward, we saw 10 aliens on the dial, the same 9 from last season, plus Way Big replacing Alien X.
However, before that we saw Ben turn into Cannon Bolt. He also had Jetray, Spidermonkey, Big Chill, Humongousaur, Echo Echo and one other that I couldn't quite make out (but looked like Heatblast or Swampfire). That only accounts for seven, so it's possible the unfamiliar aliens from last season were the three (or more) unknowns.
But I have it on good authority that he has more aliens unlocked then we saw last night, he just hasn't used any of the new ones yet.
Of course, Diamondhead is presumably replacing Chromastone. Upchuck might only be used as an accidental transformation or perhaps he's unlocked now. Have to wait and see.
One of the goals for this season was apparently to increase the number of alien transformations we see per episode. Vengance of Vilgax had 10, plus we saw the four Genoarchtypes unleashed. Even War of the Worlds featured less than that.
I'm more bothered by the fact that all the maturity Ben picked up over the last 5 years and 2 seasons has been flushed down the toilet and he's acting like a ten year old jerk again.
Enough people tell you you're the greatest, and you don't have any major setbacks to prove otherwise, well...it can go to your head. I figure the choice probably upsets at least half the current fanbase, but tons of people were clamoring for this sort of thing.
I think the upside is that we have the opportunity to actually watch Ben mature this time. Last time it was just all "new series, five years have passed, new attitudes for everyone!"
But I think it's all about going back to the roots of the show.
Gwen will use actual magic spells again, she has more practical clothes/shoes/hair and even broke out the trusty laptop again. Kevin is horribly mutated, angry and blaming Ben for his misfortune. Ben is incredibly cocky, winning with a mix of luck and skill and he won't be getting any help from Azmuth any time soon. The Omnitrix has a mind of it's own (We only saw 1 in the previous 26 episodes. We saw 2 just on Friday night), we saw capture mode for the first time in a long time and four aliens returned from the first series. We're supposed to see a lot more of Max this season, as well as several returning characters from the original series, like Charmcaster.

Ben's up. Added a few things from last season that never made it onto his previous sheet, as well as a few new things from Vengeance of Vilgax.
I think I got the VPP right. I was going to limit it to "Only For Multiform" but figured leaving it open allows it to account for some of the random Omnitrix strangeness.
Chose not to use Unified Power on all the Omnitrix powers, but I may revise that stance.
Still have to figure out the build for Capture Mode (leaning towards Dispel Summon) and some other stuff, but it's a work in progress.

Did a preliminary analysis on Way Big. He's probably going to clock in closer to 750 pts, so the Omnitrix needs a few more points.
I also seem to recall reading somewhere that he's even bigger. Until I can confirm that, I'm going to write him up at his previous size. But I think he looked bigger. He was "only" 100' tall in the original series...
Must watch again >.>
Hopefully, his return to the dial means Humongousaur will finally use his other power

Well, it's not really confirmed until we see it in on TV but...
I'm 99.99% sure he's got Shrinking too.
When I asked about it during the first season, I was told by writer/editor Dwayne McDuffie that I was going to "ruin all the surprises", so that strikes me as pretty good confirmation :sneaky:
Now, with Way Big around, there's not as much need for a alien who's main schtick is growth, especially since even at maximum size he's considerably smaller than Way Big.
So the Shrinking would give him a unique angle again.
Totally random fact: his powers work through extra-dimensional extrusion, so pretty much just like Pym Particles. No idea if that means he'll be able to extend them beyond his own body, but it's an interesting thought...

Way Big is up. Came in a little bit less expensive than I thought, since the cost of Stretching and AoE were both reduced in 6E.
Considered reducing his DCV, but made it a 5 on the off chance that he fights somone of similar size. The Size mods will make him an easy enough target for smaller opponents anyhow.
Not sure if I want to add some lims to his Damage Reduction, so that it only works vs smaller opponents. I may actually end up going with Damage Negation instead. I'm not very familiar with that mechanic yet (obviously), but I think it may end up being a better fit for giant sized opponents.
Also, I did not give him any extra leaping, even though logically his stride alone carries him ore than 4m. But, we've never seen him leave the ground... and coming from a space race based on Ultraman, he can probably fly anyhow...
Not sure if he's ultimately tough enough, but since Vilgax managed to cause him pain in the last fight and he got KOed hard by that giant Highbreed arch, I felt his defenses shouldn't be TOO high and I tend to keep the DC's on the lower side anyhow.
Any requests for which alien should be next?
Votes for Metamorpho...er... Kevin, will be ignored out of tradition!!! :p
J/K, he's actually got a pretty simple writeup based on what little we've seen of his new abilites...

Big Chill it is!
He/she/it hasn't changed too much since Save the Last Dance, though now that we have seen the ice block restrain a brick on par with Vilgax, I may need to increase the points there some.
Of course, I'll need to review the new rules for Barrier and Entangle...

Not sure if I'm happy with Big Chill. Need to review some notes and rewatch a few key episodes.
I note that his big entangle against Vilgax was likely aided by the fact that they were fighting in a water fountain, so we could probably get away with a few less points in there normally and just buy extra with an OIF water of Opportunity type limitation.

First pass at Brainstorm is up. Once again, I need to review some more footage, but there's really not that much of him to review :(
I intend to add some KSs and SSs to him, but it's not very clear what he actually knows. He uses a lot of big words and seems to understand a few things that Ben probably shouldn't (like how the Highbreed jumpgate works). But he hasn't really done anything too impressively brilliant that I can recall.
Brainstorm get's hit a fair amount when compared to some of Ben's other forms, so his DCV may be a little too high. He doesn't seem to dodge much, using his Barrier or Deflection instead. The Barrier has a somewhat odd quirk, in that he can englobe himself and then project another force field without disrupting his own, so that the reason it has the limited one way transparent. No evidence he can shoot through it with his atual attacks.
Of course, as a result of getting hit we know the little guy's pretty tough ;)
I'm really not sure how big he's supposed to be. In several scenes he looks rather small, maybe about 3' or so. In other scenes he looks to be about Ben's size (which is still kinda short, but not hobbit sized). So I may add that Complication and the corresponding abilites after I review.
Might also add some kind of environmental movement power, since he skittered up the Spidermoneky web with ease.
While I was working on Brainstorm I ended up working on Ben at the same time, so I have some updates that I'll try to post for him later on tonight. Unfortunately, in the process I also realized that I should add most of Ben Perks and many of the Omnitrix's extra features to each of the alien forms, so that's potentially going to increase each of them by around 150-200 points
I also decided to add Max as a contact for Ben, Gwen (and to a lesser extent) Kevin. Not sure if I should add the "Max Force" and consider them all an Organization Contact, but it's something to thin about. I'll probably hold off until I see how much screen time they get this season...
So, who's next?

I think Brainstorm does have some KSs and SSs; on one of the marathons where they had Pop Up Video-like tidbits, I believe one said that Ben, working as Brainstorm, Grey Matter, and Benvicktor was able to make some upgrades on the Omnitrix.

If I recall, that's in the Ben 10,000 alternate future. It's how Ben was able to create a new Omnitrix for his son, Ken. So it's conceivable that, by that time, Ben/Brainstorm gains considerable skills.
So far, the best I could probably muster from the show itself would be something like KS: English Vocabulary and maybe SS: Physics. But I may be forgetting something... I still need to review 2 of his 5 appearances (the second least of any season 1 alien)
I decided to work on Chromastone last night. I was surprised when I checked my notes. He was actually tied for third most used transformation (I figured he'd be in 5th). In any event, he's almost done and I don't expect he'll need an update anytime soon, but we'll see...

D'oh! How could I have overlooked that purple-pink-rainbow thing?
I think Wig Big is bigger than 100'. He picks up 20' Vilgax with one hand, and chucks him into space. So if Vilgax is proprotionally 6" and Way Big proportionally 72" (6 feet, or x12 bigger), that's a good 240 feet.
I think the alteration of Kevin was due to him being nerfed early on in the show. Plus, we wanted to see why he couldn't absorb powers like he used to -- he could, he just didn't want to for fear of being turned into a monster (like when absorbed the Omnitrix.)
I also think that the Anodine/magic thing was just so there could be a unified explanation for Gwen's and everybody's powers. I imagine it as: "Maybe she has magic. Maybe she's an alien. Hey, why not both?:o
About Ben's getting rid of his maturity? I'm not sure why that was done...maybe it was because Future Ben (from the one Ben 10 ep) was kind of a jerk, and the writers wanted continuity?
Seriously, I'm not sure why that happened, or if it's a good thing.

Vilgax was probably "only" around 12' actually, though in some shots he looks much bigger. In any event, Way Big was officially 100' tall in Secret of the Omnitrix, so that's I went with.
I do think he's probably much bigger now though...

He was never really showed to absorb powers straight up though. It was just an aspect of his mutant/Half-Osmosian energy absorption powers and how the Omnitrix functioned.
In AF season 1 and 2 he could allegedly still absorb energy if he wanted to, but chooses not to because "bad things" would happen... not entirely clear what that would be though.
Many people speculated he would either turn into energy or mutate back into a monster. Gotta admit, I'm looking forward to seeing how this all shakes out.
I also think that the Anodine/magic thing was just so there could be a unified explanation for Gwen's and everybody's powers. I imagine it as: "Maybe she has magic. Maybe she's an alien. Hey, why not both?:o
Yeah, this is one of those tricky half-retcons. I'm pretty sure they wnated to change it and decided against it due to fan reaction, but the dual origin may have been planned from the start of AF.
Technically, I don't recall anyone on the crew saying that it wasn't magic or that there is no such things as magic in the Ben 10verse anymore. Of course, the characters in the show think the her Anodite Spark is the sole source of her power, but they'll be seeing otherwise shortly :sneaky:

I've already voiced my opinion on why I think they did it. I reserve judgment on it for now, but think it will make for some good stories in the long run.
However, the Ben 10K setting is a divergent timeline and has been since the beginning. 30 year old Ben has no recollection of ever traveling to the future and meeting himself. So while they can definitely do stuff to move it in that direction, I don't know that they will. Of course, the plot of the next series does seem to nudge it ever closer....

First draft of Chromastone's up and he's a powerhouse. When Fully juiced up, he should be able to dish out 20d6 Blasts!
He's supposed to have incredible laser precision. In fact the only time I recall him missing a shot was when he had escaped the Omnitrix. As such, his OCV is pretty massive. Might need to change those levels so he can use them with Reflection, now that I think about it.
I peg his STR at a 50, though there aren't many examples of his lifting stuff to work with. But he goes toe to toe with several bricks and does a few brick trick like things (didn't put the Shockwave Punch since he never actually hit anything with it, but might add it later). His leaping may not be enough, but they change the camera shot almost every time he uses it, so it's hard to judge just how far he travels.
His power defense is there because of his immunity to the Xenocite Transform. He probably deserves more Life Support (I can't imagine he's vulnerable to conventional poison or disease, he probably doesn't need to breath and I'm pretty sure he eats energy). But for now I'll just assume the Power Defense catches most of that type stuff.

Yeah, the multiple power origins in the Benverse is part of what lent it its charm. Although I was wondering if they'd just use the "Green Lantern" explanation for Gwen's powers -- merely a tool for focusing her Anodite powers. I like the multi-power origins..so yeah, real spells are nice.

Aww no new alien on Inferno :(
We have proof that Brainstorm is pretty damn huge. And can fly...or at least levitate... that was slightly unexpected. His TK is also a LOT stronger (and less limited) than the guess I had down before. I'm estimating the total STR needed to lift the 13 train cars at around 70 STR... and that's assuming they are empty
The Omnitrix is more broke than I thought. Might need to reduce the recommended activation roll for the Variable Limitation.
Some other interesting tidbits to think about...

I would make that a limitation on the Xenocyte Transformation; it can't affect any target that's inorganic or covered in an inorganic shell (the latter being largely speculative, but the Xenocytes seem to be based somewhat on Starro, and that's how he worked last I knew).

Good line of thought. I'll probably leave it as is for now, but might come back to that one later.
Like I said, I felt the Power Defense was a good catch all for other effects that should would work against biologicals, but would probably fail on Crystalsapiens.

Interview : http://www.newsarama.com/tv/090922-Animated-Shorts-McDuffie.html
Oh, and since I noticed this I feel obliged to add it here:
Corrections to new Dwayne McDuffie Interview
September 22nd, 2009 | Permalink
I did a Ben 10 interview for Newsarama that has somehow morphed into a JLA and Ben 10 interview, despite the fact that we talked about Ben 10 for about 30 minutes and JLA for 5, ostensibly in preparation for a future JLA interview. There are a few incorrect implications and inferences in the piece, I’m going to take a swing at correcting some of them:
“It’s fair to say that Doc Paradox is returning and David McCallum is still in the role,” quips McDuffie. “
The character’s name is “Professor Paradox,” usually referred to as “Paradox.” He’s never referred to as Doc Paradox.
As it turns out, the movie is based on a script that McDuffie submitted to a never-completed season of “Justice League,” entitled “Worlds Collide.”
Nope, It’s based on my script for an unproduced Justice League Direct-To-Video movie originally called “Fearful Symmetry,” then later renamed “Worlds Collide.” This movie would have bridged the end of the Justice League with the beginning of Justice League Unlimited. It proved to be too much work to make a movie while designing the new JLU show, so the project was shelved.
“The story is ‘Mirror Mirror’ from ‘Star Trek,’” says McDuffie. “So we both did our take on that.”
I don’t have a tape, but my full quote was something like, “The story is ‘Mirror Mirror’ from Star Trek. Actually, they did it in JLA before then, what was it, JLA #29? James loaned me a copy (back when I wrote the movie originally). So we both did a take on that.” If I didn’t say precisely that, that was my intention.
Working on Humongousaur, but ran into some issues with the way Growth works now, so it's been taking me a while to puzzle some stuff out.
His official profile says that at his normal size, he can bench press a pickup truck. This only requires a STR of about 35 or so. But in my last batch of 5E writeups, I pegged his base STR at 55. I just can't remember what events brought me to that conclusion now... as of Inferno, him and Jetray are tied for first place for most often used forms, so I have a lot of reviewing to do...

Well, saying he can bench press a pickup truck isn't saying he can't bench press a lot more. ;) I think I've seen Humongosaur lift and throw (and break) things to warrant at least a 50.

Probably, but I want to check it out before just blindly converting from my previous writeup, especially with the way 6E Growth works. Based on his size template (18m or Gigantic), that base level of STR would probably put him at a STR of 110-115 at full size. In my 5E writeup he was only a 90 STR at max size.
Way Big was only pegged at 100 STR (though again I think he's supposed to be a lot bigger and stronger now, so that may well change once he has a few more appearances)
Regardless, Vilgax is going to end up CRAZY powerful in order to replicate some of the stuff he pulled off :angst:

Did a quick post of Humongousaur. Need to redo the formatting and whatnot, but too tired. Stupid allergy meds :(
Humongousaur is normally a Large character, but he can grow up to Gigantic size. Since stacking the two together with the Growth power wasn't getting the results I wanted, I decided to build his growth piecemeal. I think it worked out ok.
Didn't get a chance to do a full review of all the episodes he's been in, so he may be missing a few brick tricks. He's quite fond of doing a falling move through, but I don't recall him doing too much actual Leaping. Regardless, he probably deserves at least a little more Leaping that I gave him. I'll fix that after I review. I distinctly remember a flying body splash attack from season 1...
He's using a new prefab, so he's got a few skills and perks that will eventually be added to the other aliens.
Probably going to do Spider-monkey or Jetray next.

For all his size, Humungo has some pretty stubby legs. He probably doesn't jump very well. Most of his Death From Above attacks have involved him jumping or falling from a height onto someone, rather than a flying leap.

Ooo...good point on the legs
I might remove some of the extra running I gave him at his base height, while increasing his Reach. Compared to a human, he's got disproportionately long arms but stubby little legs. The Size Templates are clearly designed around human proportions. I mean, he doesn't seem to move slower than the rest of the gang, but he's not bounding ahead of them either.
While I think he usually does fall onto things (a couple of times by going Jetray first), I distinctly recall a few pro wrestling type moments too. Which is why he might deserve more leaping. Not really sure yet though. He certainly doesn't jump around like Spidermonkey or Chromastone or anything.

Spidermonkey is up. Once again, too lazy to do the formatting but I'll get to it eventually.
The Capture Web is rather expensive, but I think it does about what I want it to. May need some tweaking though still. It managed to restrain Kevin, so the entangle may need to be more potent and it captured Kevin's Ride while it was rolling down the highway, so the barrier aspect has to be pretty strong too. But since it did no damage to said vehicle on impact, I may need to revise that... perhaps just an AoE entangle.. hmmm... I'll think on it.
Spidermonkey seems to have weirdly inconsistent strength. I have it on good authority that he's supposed to be stronger than Spider-man (being part monkey and part spider will do that), but he only rarely demonstrates any feats of Strength. He leaps very far and high. He whipped Kevin around like a ragdoll once. His punches and flying kicks often do considerable knockback. those are the arguments for that I can recall.
By contrast, Gwen comments that he's not strong enough to catch a bomb in Inferno (but maybe it was just really, really heavy) he's restrained by his own webs and by ropes (admittedly, those were alien ropes and it was after being gassed). He's almost never shown to lift anything heavy. The one other Arachnachimp we've seen (Simian) was showed to need help from Ben and Kevin to move big things and was manhandled by Ben while he was in human form (Ben pined him against a wall and threw him around like a sack of potatoes).
Anyhow, for now I keeping him with a 45 STR, even though to be stronger than Spider-man he technically need to be higher. I was thinking about reducing his base STR and give him some extra STR with Requires a Roll at some point, but unless I see him flub some STR related tasks it's probably not worth it.

And since Simple has aired...
-Have to add Tae Kwon Do to Gwen's list of martial arts.
- Ship apparently has a Warp Drive. I was going to write him up as Julie's Follower, but I may put him back on Ben's sheet if he's able to borrow the little guy without bringing Julie along
- Way Big: Ok, he's almost definitely taller now. It was a bit rough to get a good sense of scale in those shots and it doesn't help that the aliens were rather short. But he's ginormous. He's also a LOT tougher than I have listed right now, unless those alien tanks are just shooting super wimpy missiles.
- Lodestar: I rather like the design. Obviously his head is metal and I think he's supposed to have a metal or mineral body. Clearly has decent ED to take that many shots and just say "ow" a few times. Magnetic powers and the end of his transformation sequence makes me think he can probably fly. Obviously, he's got a pretty big AoE TK. Can't say much else beyond that, but looking forward to seeing more of him.

Scale is something most cartoons simply don't, or can't, do effectively. I'm certain that, if we had some objective comparison, Way Big's height would vary dramatically from episode to episode. Don't bust a capillary over it. :)
I'm wondering if Lodestar's claws can close, or if he has to manipulate everything electromagnetically.

The new episode Single Handed has some interesting bits:
- I smiled ear to ear when they opened the show with Spidermonkey swinging through downtown Bellwood :D I'm an easy mark sometimes.
- I rather like Sunder and hope to see him again some time. Got a bit of a Terrax vibe from him, though instead of flying around on a rock he has a goblin glider :)
- Big Chill actually projected his Ice Block from his hand, instead of his mouth. Similarly, Brainstorm shot lightning from his hand instead of from his brain. That's quite different and I'm wondering if these were intended or if they were animation errors...

Jetray's up.
While I increased his toughness from my last writeup, I might need to toughen him up even more. Really depends on how strong I make Vilgax. Jetray took several hits right in the kisser in rapid succession and Ben still had the ware withal to change into Big Chill. So obviously, Jetray can take a beating.
Lift Off is there because Albedeo was able to fly around as Jetray while carrying Humongosuar (normal size), but it's entirely possible that Jetray is supposed to be really strong all around...
I may redo the Neuroshock Blasts based on the new rules for Multiple Attacks, but I think they work pretty well as is. Ben frequently uses Deflection with one location and then blasts from the other location, which the MP has enough points to do. However, when he's concentrating his fire into the triple blast, he can't use Deflection at the same time.

Another week, another early release on iTunes. This episode is titled If All Else Fails:
- Curse you for not giving me a real kaiju fight!!!! But we now know Humongo can jump halfway decently... Speaking of, with the expanded info on Growth templates in the APG, I might end up redoing him.
- Ok, Gwen needs luck based Damage Reduction or something! She got swatted around good by a giant monster and walked away from it all with nary a scratch. Also, that, was a HUGE force wall she tried to use.
- I'll have to remember that safety cushion trick.
- I wonder how Kev feels about being used as a projectile weapon? And we know his dad's name finally!
- Probably need to change Ben's relationship with Ship and Reiny. Still not 100% sure what to do with Ship, but Ben mainly uses him as a Vehicle, but he's basically a shapeshifting Follower. Reiny might not show up often, but when you can drag the supreme leader of an entire species halfway across the galaxy, you probably deserve better than an 8- roll for your Contact ;)

Well, I've seen 'Singlehanded' twice now, and ... ngh. There was quite a bit wrong in the episode, but I blame the writer, Marty Isenberg, whom I wouldn't trust to write out a grocery list. Not only did Big Chill and Brainstorm fire energy from their hands, Brainstorm didn't even have a hand on the arm he fired his from; the electricity should have been launched in the Null Void. Same with Diamondhead on the bridge.
Although, I must admit, I did like;
Gwen: "Keep away from the big ugly guy!"
*Kevin peeks up from behind his car*
Gwen: "The other one."
*Kevin goes back to work*

Yeah, it was goofy and disjointed, but still entertained me.
I think the writers my be having a weird out contest. Ben's hand running around on it's own takes the cake so far, even above Fool's Gold. Silver Age levels of inexplicable bizarreness. :nonp:
As I said, I look forward to Sunder appearing again some time. Powers Boothe was awesome and I think the character has potential as a reoccurring villain.
For the record, If All Else Fails had a rather serious tone compared to the last few episodes.

Swampfire's up.
He's one of Ben's more heavily used aliens and he has an ever increasing list of really versatile powers. I did a few things differently in this version.
First of all, Swampfire has demonstrated his plant control abilites are not inherently linked to the Methane gas power, even though in his early appearances he released said gas when animating plants. As such, I have split his Plant Control Powers and his Fire powers into separate MP's.
He's a royal pain in the butt to balance defensively. In most fights, he's virtually impossible to put down. He feels little to no pain and even when he loses a limb it barely slows him down. Even losing his head is just a temporary inconvenience.
He's got enough defenses that swarms of DNAliens can't really hurt him. However, a single Highbreed was able to one shot him and Goops anti grav unit shredded him. I may revisit his defenses and consider putting some of them in an MP, so that he can't use all of them at once. This would help account for the variability of his toughness.
Anyhow, overall, I lowered his defenses ever so slightly so that it's possible to incapacitate him for a few seconds at a time by doing enough BODY.
His DR is now Stun only and, because of the way Killing Attacks work in 6E, I removed his Resistant protection. So he can potentially get cut and blasted apart by KA's, even though it still won't hurt much. However, I raised his REC and Regen to keep him going. With his high CON and STUN he's probably not getting stunned by any normal attack. I'll have to run some numbers to see how many DNAliens he can fight before things turn against him ;)
I also removed his Brawling MP for now, as I am considering giving Ben a few martial maneuvers across all forms. If I don't do that, I'll add it back in since Swampfire is clearly very hard hitting and has used the Ear Slap Hearing Flash.

Perhaps this could be represented by high levels of the new Damage Negation power but small STUN and BODY scores.

First new draft of Echo Echo is done. My previous version gave Echo Echo the ability to create 32 dupes at once.
We saw literally hundreds of them in Fools Gold. They were uncountable legions I tell you! I doubt the animators that drew them know how many were actually in any given scene. :help:
Anyhow, he's currently the most expensive form and he still probably doesn't quite approach the levels of insanity we have seen from the little guy. Not that he's ever shown to be world shatteringly powerful or anything, it's just that Duplication of this magnitude is REALLY expensive.
The dupes have been revealed to be rather expendable, gladly sacrificing themselves for a tactical advantage. This was very clearly demonstrated in Single Handed. Technically, we don't KNOW that any of them were actually killed in Fool's Gold, though based on the chewing of the initial handful, I would kind of assume so :idjit:
In addition, each of the Duplicate seems to have the ability to duplicate :drink:
So I want with a hybrid Duplication/Summon Route. Ben can create 8 standard Dupes and each of them is then able to summon 16 more dupes, for a total of 144 possible Echo Echo's. The Summons do not have enough points for the Summon, Duplication or Resurrection abilities, thus preventing an infinite loop.
Ben has surprisingly few Duplication Stunts. He mostly uses Echo Echo's to do attacks from multiple angles or for swarm tactics. He frequently Coordinates his attacks, which is one of the reasons I reduced the dice in his main attack slightly. I also didn't give him too much END. And for the record, Echo Echo's Living Amplifier power isn't intended to work on himself OR his Dupes/Summons.
I may need to increase the knockback of his powers, but he often seems to build up to knockback, slowly pushing things away as he screams at them until they go flying.
Oh, and I need to add the Scream Through A Cell Phone stunt, which was incredibly complicated... but I misplaced my notes on it :(
To point out the obvious, Echo Echo would be a nightmare to GM for and is probably pretty much unplayable without some sort of mass combat rules... or maybe a computer simulation. :sneaky:
You could easily ditch the Summon ability and run him with just 8 dupes for a somewhat more down to earth total of 832 points. Still a TON of power and a lot of actions to work through in a turn though

I dunno about anybody else, but I didn't see any new alien tricks in 'If All Else Fails'. I haven't looked at the Swampfire writeup, but I can't imagine 'brain infested by plant-like alien' to be a frequent enough occurance to create a power to cover.

Yeah, not much. As I said, I'll be adding a few inches to Humongo's jump.
I figure the Mind Control (Plant Class of Minds) covers what Swampfire did.
Diamondhead's new writeup isn't posted yet of course. He's due some pretty interesting upgrades from the original series.. and maybe a downgrade or two as well, considering how easily his crystal constructs get shattered in AF...

Not so far, but there was a hint dropped that Chromastone might be why Diamondheads ranged shard attacks explode on impact now.

So...
Originally:
Magic exists. Gwen is a sorceress.
Then:
Magic doesn't exist. Gwen's powers derive from her grandmother being an alien energy being.
Now, apparently:
Magic exists. Gwen is a sorceress. Her grandmother was an alien made of living magical energy, giving her a natural affinity for magic.
Make up your minds writers!
But I guess she gets her spellbook-based VPP back.

Only according to Kevin and Gwen's father Frank, neither of whom are experts on such matters. Verdona never actually said Gwen wasn't using magic. Gwen waffled about terminology a bit herself in the first season.
The writers and editors have never (to my knowledge) gone on record to say magic didn't exist, though quite a few creatures of myth and lore (dragons, ghosts... possibly unicorns and trolls...) have turned out be aliens.

I read it as, there are two ways to access mana. Either inborn via alien powers, or learning via spells. Not unlike sorcerers and wizards in D&D.

Pretty much, it's just that Gwen is a mutlicalssed Wizard/Sorcerer (monk/computergeek) with a PrC that lets her levels stack so she isn't totally gimp ;)
From everything we have seen, Gwen has an increased natural affinity for manipulating mana just by virtue of her Annodite spark. We saw this (without explanation) even in the first series, when she was doing things with a few weeks of self-taught magic lessons that Charmcaster could not manage (like using Hex's staff). And Charmcaster is 5 years her senior, with (presumably) significantly more experience and proper training.
She also seems to have an abundance of mana attributed to her alien heritage. However, according to Verdona, Max also has a ton of mana/life energy, despite not having any magical powers...
We'll just continue to call that the Tenyson Family Luck ;)

Well, Ghost Town was interesting...
Well, looks like Ghostfreak is back on the dial. His TK is a lot more obvious now and it was cool seeing him do some new tricks. I wanted to scream at Ben as soon as he said he had an idea...
Still getting used to the newer, nobler and cosmically powerful Vilgax. A part of me hopes his more caring and seemingly lawful nature is all an act... while another part of me really kind of likes this version. Can't wait to see him use the massive hammer that I have seen him pictured with, but the costume is still inferior to his original :P
Pretty good action overall. I LOVED the opening sequence. But there were lots of continuity "errors" and head scratcher moments in this one. Plenty of stuff left unexplained too. Can't help but feel it's all one big setup and I'm looking forward to a glorious payoff :D

And in frustrating turn of events I have just lost around 2 months worth of work on the Ben 10 write ups :(
Literally everything was fine when I looked at it yesterday and now it's all gone.
Life has been so hectic lately that I forgot to do any backups. My most recent HD file's are from 9/25, which basically gives me Ben, Big Chill, Brainstorm, Chromastone and Waybig.
Fortunately, I can get a portion of it back because of this thread...
Unfortunately, the date entry is going to take a while... and I had around 25 MB of notes, spreadsheets and unposted characters that are lost for good.
This included the (still unfinished) writeups of Kevin, Gwen, Ship, Darkstar, Vilgax, Alan, Cooper, Helen, Manny and Pierce.
Damn it, why did October have to be such a productive month? :(

Watched Alien Swarm...
Nanomech is basically the Wasp: Flight, Shrinking, Energy Blasts. Probably Resistant Defense, looked to be quite strong for his size when he was fighting the queen, but it's not like he did any heavy lifting.
I think he's supposed to be permanently small and can shrink down even smaller, but not 100% on that one. Seemed to go down to "microverse"since, since it looked like they were fighting on synapses and such.
I'm also not really sure what the "Adaptability" bit was. He imitated the Queen's tentacle energy blast things, so either he has some ability to upgrade himself mechanically or maybe he has some kind of power duplication.
Don't really have much to go on yet, but we'll allegedly be seeing more of him in the next season of the cartoon.

Ok, the rough draft is up.
I think he's tough enough to do most of what we saw.
The deep space survival thing is based on the idea that he boarded the Incursian ship and was apparently fighting in a vaccuum for a while, despite the fact Gwen suffocated him. But he was talking in that bubble, thus negating the life support.
He never really seemed to use those big Wolverine/The Maxx looknig claws for anything except intimidation, so the AP my turn out to be inappropriate.
He also may turn out to be a lot stronger than I have him listed here, but only time will tell.
Oops! Considering his willingness to fight Gwen and Kev, there should possibly be a Berserk on there...

Twice? I remember Vulkanus and the Incursian commander saying it. Lots of other really violent threats threats though ;)
Of course, it's not that uncommon of a word for the show really. And they do have a surprising number of on screen deaths for a kids program.

Another little note on Rath: I massively undersold his leaping ability. He performs two standing leaps of around 120-150' each.
Standing leaps are of course HALF the characters total distance, so if I lowball things, he would need around 72m of Leaping. Or 36m if we assume he used NCM to jump up and give Jarret's face a hug, but that's questionable.
Ben has a Martial Arts package I'm working on rebuilding, which may make balancing some things a little tricky going forward. I may leave most of it as just an explaination for how he uses his CSL's, but some stuff (like his Martial Flash) can't be done without maneuvers/powers. Sure, he's not as proficient or as fancy as as Gwen, but he's deffintly got more than just a hand attack. He actually does flying kicks in various forms (Swampfire and Spidermonkey) and Rath actually does a jumping spin kick on Boid. So, still a bit torn on which maneuvers I'll give him. Probably going to stay away from ones that buff damage, but we'll see.
Oh, another random observation about Rath: I also noticed he doesn't use punches. Instead, he hits people with knifehand chops. Probably a combination nod to pro wrestling... and a good way to prevent him from stabbing everything in sight ;)
Also watched Primus tonight.
Lots of interesting reveals.
We got another appearance by Rath... sort of.
Wasn't overly fond of the the way Vilgax was portrayed.

Not sure...
Ditto and Wildvine weren't mentioned in any of the other spoiler info I've read. Way Big is also drawn in his original series style, which seems odd to me. Having Alien X on the dial is a strange choice as well. So either the artist just picked some aliens for filler or Ben has a HUGE selection of forms this season.
I know the names of at least 4 or 5 of his Ben's new aliens. I say 4 or 5 because I'm not 100% sure if one of those names is actually an Omnitrix form or a new villian/NPC. But I can only take an educated guess as to who's who in the picture.
You'll also notice the Omnitrix looks different... good reason for that, which ties into the season finale.
Another thing to point out is that the comic is due out first week of April. Makes me wonder if the new series is launching that quickly.

Some quick notes from Above and Beyond:
- Chamber of Echos is a really cool name for a power stunt, but I'm not sure if it actually needs a writeup. It's probably just a coordinated attack. Then again, with how much knockback the sonic scream does, maybe add in some kind of TK Grab or Entangle. Helen didn't (couldn't?) run away before sucumbing to the effect... I'll have watch again.
- Big Chill's "ice tendrils" were pretty cool. Thinking Indirect Blast or RKA.
- Hmmm... Humongosaur can survive in deep space for brief periods of time.
- It's official, Ben/Rath has galactic pro wrestling as a martial art! :p Might have to give him Clinging to represent how well he can climb and his ability to reduce knockback with his claws (though this could just be a special effect of STR or Breakfall). Definitely have to rewatch that scene.
- Goop needs an entangle/darkness/sight group flash type power. Don;t think he did anything else new...
- Saw some nice stuff from the Plumber's Helpers/Max Force, but where was Cooper!?!?! Looks like Max got his old rank back too. Probably should get around to writing them all up at some point...
