Drow Blade Dancer

Hi everybody,

I just got a flash this evening and I created this character form an old idea I had a year ago or so.

I built her dungeon style, even though I prefer surface dwelling dark elves, such as in Records of Lodoss War. I also used Killershrike's equipment list, even though for only one item.

I don't have a very complex or complete background to offer, but I imagined her in the service of a fallen but clever drow lord seeking revenge and final victory, serving as her agent, bodyguard, assassin, etc.

I'm posting her here in order to get feedback about my character creation skills, as I don't believe them to be as good as I'd like to. Please feel free to offer your deifferent views on how I could have built her more efficiently, or less costly, etc.:thumbup:

Something odd about your character there, as you have clearly used Hero Designer to build it, but it seems to have not included the cost of the extra two inches of running and leaping (6 points).

There is obviously a lot of thought given here to being faithful to a character conception, and that is a good thing. Indeed for many game masters, they would delight in characters created with such a devotion to their conception without focusing on their combat potential. That said...

I must say, for a 317 point character (323 if running and jumping get paid for), this 'war dancer' is not a very good fighter. Yes, she has a Dex of 20 and a Speed of 4, which are the essential 'starting' stats for such a character. But then, other than 3 combat skill levels,, really minimal resistant defenses and a Deadly Blow that puts the damage into what I would expect coming from a 100 point character, there is very little here to make her exceptional. Again, for some GMs running a very low powered game, this might be perfectly fine. But I don't know any GMs running such a low powered games that would have characters built with over 300 points.

Were I creating such a character, I would very strongly consider some martial arts maneuvers, as it is quite hard for me to imagine a war dancer without such enhanced maneuvers. Also, most dancers I've known are extraordinarily strong, while this dancer is so weak, she couldn't add a damage class with her Strength to even a short sword. Consider buying some hand to hand combat levels with a -1 limitation on them 'Only for DCV' and call it 'Melee Awareness', which will help compensate for the relatively low resistant defense on the 300+ point character.

Finally, while the Drow magical abilities might make some sense from a character conception point of view, they seem to me to be a huge amount of points spent on a couple non lethal grenades; a flash grenade and a smoke grenade. I'm not quite sure what you were trying to achieve there. I look at the points spent there and see a lot of martial maneuvers, strength, combat levels, etc., that were 'not' bought.

Yeah, I didn't put some in because this is a part of the system I really don't get yet. Guess I got some work to do here... ;)

The reason why I built her this way is because I don't see her as really physically powerful; her deadlyness (in my mind, if not on paper...) comes from her technique more than her muscles; I don't see her thorwing boulders on her way... Maybe I should by some more deadly blow levels or to buy additional STR as a power with a limitation in order for it to count only for damage?

Drow are a matriarchal society

Yeah, there are some inconsistencies in the character because I built her as a classical DND drow while I thought of her more like a Lodoss, Lineage or other manga style dark elf.

I could change the race of her lord to fix, but the problem about the costly magical habilities pointed at by Panpiper wouldn't get better for that (moreover, with a, say, human lord, I'd fear the character would more or less become just some rip off of Lodoss' Pirotess). I think I'll just get rid of the magical habilities; she just won't be a DND drow anymore.

Thanks to you both; I'll wait for some other comments and I'll work the character again in order to make her more powerfull/less costly, and then, I'll post her again.:thumbup:

i agree with panpiper for 317 pts the character can be a better fighter............and my problem with the character is ........the dnd style drow all the drow power is too much expensive............for the form you can take one power of that list to symbolise the fact that is a underdark creature but you have to take some martial art skills with sword
