Ok, I give up after 2 hours of trying and reading previous posts. I have Vista home premium. I downloaded the install download into a directory I created. I renamed it into a .jar file. I have Java 6. I try to open the file and it seems to unzip. The properties seem to be compressed (zip), which I cannot seem to change. What do I do next?

One of two things:
1 (most likely): Your system is set to hide the extensions for known filetypes. This means that when your browser "helpfully" renames the file to "HDv3Setup.zip" when you go to rename it, you're ending up with "HDv3Setup.jar.zip" which is still a zip file. You'll want to set your system to always show file extensions...then you'll be able to rename the file to HDv3Setup.jar and double click to run.
2 (also likely): Your system is set to open .jar files with WinZip. WinZip likes to be greedy and grab every file extension that it can....even when this breaks things on your system. You can either go to the file associations setting in WinZip and disable (uncheck) jar files, or you can re-install Java6 on your system, which will reset the file associations for .jar files (at least, until WinZip grabs them back).
You'll need to make sure that both of these issues are addressed -- the file needs to be named HDv3Setup.jar and jar files need to be associated with Java on your system. Once you've got that, double-clicking the jar file will launch the installer and you'll be good to go.
Since you're running Vista, make sure that you install HD to a directory that you have full control over the default of C:\Program Files\ is protected by Vista's UAC (as is C:\ and several other directories). I'd recommend your home directory or your Documents folder.
