Back on the old board, Scott was kindly post new images of his classic characters, the Protectors. Just wondering if Scott had some more images available? You did not get to my favorite character, Dr. Wraithe, also known as the Warlock. So if you have more great artwork or stories you would like share, please do.
Always wondered if you used Coatlicue in your own campaign and what became of her.

Are these updated images of the Protectors still available?
Or is that what you were asking?
Love to see them, either way.

I second that.
"To Serve and Protect" was one of the best adventures ever to come out of 3rd edition...

Hi, guys. Yeah, I started to post updated images for the ol' team a bit before New Year's. I was hoping to have them all up and available by now. Unfortunately, I've been absolutely buried at work -- it's all a good thing, but it's leaving me very little free time. I'm hoping things will settle down a bit by the middle of March, and then I can get the rest of the team available. In the meantime, I've posted the pics that were already done at a freebie web host. Here's the link...
The first batch of Protector pics... (http://www.geocities.com/scott_heine_hero/)
Doctor Wraithe, aka "The Warlock," will be the next one up. The line art is done and inked; just need to scan and color. But don't hold your breath. I'm serious when I say mid-March is the earliest I hope for...
Now pardon me while I bury myself under my "in" box once again... :p

Don't ask me what I was thinking when I first drew him. Heck, that was DECADES ago now. I think I was influenced by Cyborg of the new Teen Titans; at least, that's who he reminds me of now. I think if I had it to do all over again, there'd be less flesh showing, more of a "Borg-like" feel, and the skin that could be seen would be scarred and disfigured.
To be honest, I don't really remember the issue ever coming up until I reposted the pic on the old boards a couple of months ago. Then again, I seem to remember that Mandroid went around with street clothes covering his armor most of the time -- probably baggy jeans, a dark T-Shirt, maybe a worn leather jacket. The character I had in mind for TS&P had kind of a "The Thing" complex, in that he felt ugly and visually repulsive. But that only came up in the campaign a couple of times, usually when the character had to remove his faceplate for some reason (which he never did in front of his teammates, as I recall...)
For what it's worth, someone (who shall remain nameless) sent me an e-mail today after looking at the pictures, thanking me for including a gay hero in a Champions product. Hmm. I never thought of Mandroid as gay...

That's damn funny!
Especially when you consider that the alternative seems to be wearing tights, which in the hero world is acceptable among hetero folk.
My drawings all look like girls anyway. Oh, wait... I only draw women :)

I have the book, To Serve and Protect and I liked it.
The pic for Dr Wraithe was not that good but it was a good book and the pic of Coatlicue on the cover was good.
The hero team for my group was The Protectors and we had this before the book came out (Late 1984 we started).
And there was an Ace in our group as well. Didn't the player get snotty about that.
I like the new Ace look. Helios was good in the original drawing and the new version lives up to that. Renegade has not changed and his look is Classic anyway.
I have nothing to add on the Mandroid debate except that was not his original name.

Never did pick up the book though I recall looking through it a few times. Mostly I didn't get it becaue my game's primary team were already called the Protectors.
In case I didn't mention it (and looking back through my posts, I didn't), very nice artwork.

Is it because of the Marvel characters known as Mandroids? Because it would be odd of him to request such a change when he didn't ask you to change the name of Quasar (another Marvel character)...

*shrug*
I don't know; it was a long time ago. I was a DC guy myself, but that sounds right. I know he mentioned a Marvel copyright. We also changed Tempest to Maelstrom (I like both names, so no big deal), and Warlock to Dr. Wraithe (which I never liked as much, mostly because we already had a "Doc" on the team). But we never talked about Quasar, either because (a) Quasar wasn't in use much at the time (I have no idea), or (b) he knew I'd never change it. Hey, it's one thing for me to tamper with the characters of other players for publication, but Quasar was my character! :p

Those name changes are really strange. At first, I thought it must be because "Mandroid" is an invented word, so it could be copyrighted, but "Quasar" is an astronomical phenomenon and could not be protected. However, that does not explain "Tempest" and "Warlock". I would have thought that the Marvel Quasar was at least as well known as Tempest (a member of the Shi'Ar Imperial Guard with electrical powers IIRC) or "Warlock" (hadn't he been dead for a while?). Sorry if I've gone wrong on dates/ facts for the Marvel characters. I am sure someone can (and will) correct me, if I've made a mistake.
I am not too familiar with The Protectors ("To Serve and Protect" came out when I didn't buy a lot of game product, except Marvel Superheroes:) ), but they look great and seem like a team.

Feb 28th, '03, 11:22 AM
Well, that's the thing with copyright issues. You can contact anyone with a copyright to seek permission; but if they turn you down you have to go along with it. Because by contacting them you've kind of conceded that there might be some similarity.
Or you can ignore their character and claim there's no similarity, in which case you risk litigation later on if they decided to be vindictive about your use of the name.
Or, you can do what they did, and play it safe. Change a few names and hope you escape notice on anything you missed.

Scott, do you have an actual website, I've done the whole Google search for you and always get bunk. I've been looking for other art by you, to use of course.
Was saddened when you updated Dr Wraithe/Warlock in Adventurers Club that you didn't do the picture.

No, I don't have a site up with artwork. Illustration was always more of a hobby than a career for me. Most of what I do now is in-house stuff for education, branding, etc. Though it's been fun doing a few pieces for the new Hero, and I look forward to doing more as my schedule allows... :)

Yeah, I was, too. I did NOT care for those illustrations. What was really odd is that I was originally asked to illustrate the piece, and actually submitted pics with the article. I never was told why my pics were not used. Oh well... Those were the days of ICE, which is probably 'nuff said.

Well Warlock is a real term, as well as Tempest so there shouldn't have been any problems as far as copyright.

For what it's worth, some of the illos being posted here are merely ones that other people have scanned from To Serve and Protect and colored themselves (sometimes incorrectly -- Maelstrom and Quasar, in particular), and quality is pretty sketchy (Huntsman, for example).

I know that the Huntsman is mine (colored pencils, by the way, I hadn't learned digital coloring yet). It didn't scan well, at all. I'm not sure about the other two that you mention. They might be mine. It's funny how many different interpretations can be derived from a verbal description.
If possible, maybe you could post your "proper" versions of those characters. Pretty please. :)

For what it's worth, some of the illos being posted here are merely ones that other people have scanned from To Serve and Protect and colored themselves (sometimes incorrectly -- Maelstrom and Quasar, in particular), and quality is pretty sketchy (Huntsman, for example).
Let's see the descriptions from To Serve and Protect:
Maelstrom: "For a uniform, Dr. Ford has chosen a dark purple outfit with large yellow inserts. His hair is a tussled silver, and he is usually draped in a purple cloak with yellow striping." Looking at the original illustration, I would guess that all the black parts ih the colored file should have been purple, and the purple lining of the cloak should be yellow too.
Quasar: "In battle, Quasar wears an ornate white uniform with starry black sleeves and leggings. The trimming on his boots and gloves is bright gold, as is his hair and glowing eyes. His wings are a soft white." Sounds pretty close to the colored version attached here.
BTW according to his textual description, Dr. Wraithe's tunic is supposed to be dark blue, but otherwise his color scheme matches. Brainstorm seems just about bang-on.
Huntsman does look "off" (no offense to aylwin 13), but IMO the others look pretty good, particularly Quasar.

Not at all, and I apologise if I gave that impression. I was merely comparing the colored illos with the textual descriptions from the adventure. As I noted, some are very obvious departures (although they don't look bad for that IMHO); but one could excuse whatever the colorists' departure was for Quasar's costume, given the text.
