View Full Version : Your Brick Role Model

While I know (and impressed by) the sheer number of original concepts i see on these boards; I know just as many of us have a loose "kind of like so and so" as a starting point. Nothing wrong with that, it saves time, and with enough hard work you can make him/her unique and your own.

Still, for Bricks, which if any of these might be your role models for character creation? Be it by their power, their situations, or their personality.I've left a lot off, for which I apologize but I did make it multiple choice allowed. :)

I picked Colossues as a role model, but that's not entirely true. I only rarely make the OIHID kind of character, but he's probably the closest I have to a role model when it comes to construction. The Thing is certainly near the top when it comes to overall personality. However, I actually ran a Doc Samson clone for a long time, and he was one of my favorites.

Most of the time I like gimmick-free characters, especially when it comes to bricks. Give him some strength, some high defenses, one or two little--and I mean LITTLE--gimmicks, and he's good to go. Nothing fancy, no mixing of powers, just a guy who can hit and be hit.

Good times, good times...

I picked Colossus and Capt. Marvel, because there the closest to what i have played in the past, but actually the one I based past bricks on the most was Capt. Britain.

What I noticed was that there isn't one "Power Armor" brick in the lot. I know that Power Armor characters are their own category, since they often have weapon systems and other gadgets, but some have to be closer to bricks than anything else.

Now, if I only could think of some... :D

That's a good point, actually. The "Iron Man" types do have their place in the superhero world. Iron Man is as much a brick as Superman is, after all.

After giving my own poll careful consideration, Personality wise most of my Bricks are "Thing" like. Let's face is, Aunt Petunia's favorite blue-eyed boy is a class act all by himself. He's a smart fighter, and originiated many of the "Brick Tricks" that I love to have in my characters.

He's also rather 'blue collar' and 'common joe' in feel (Despite being a pilot). If there is a tendency to stereotype bricks in that vein, it's due a large part because the Thing did it so well. I don't make many 'ugly' bricks, which is where I split a bit from him, but I love Ben Grimm's chutzpah and tenacity.

I also tend to go for flying bricks ala super man. Man, do I owe Supes an apology. I was awfully rough on him in my youth.

Mmm.. my apologies then to the techno-bricks and their ilk.

Supes is a classic character, and I think the only reason I don't use more flying bricks is that they tend to be a bit too obviously Superman or Captain Marvel based. Between the two, CM types may show up a bit more in my games; there's something about that golden-age gormlessness that makes for wonderful comic relief. The Tick is another classic for comedic bricks.

I voted for She-hulk above, mainly because I have a number of smart female bricks running around in my game world, many of whom have had their lives changed for the worse by the introduction of their powers.

My most used male brick NPC was Invictus; he showed up in at least a dozen story arcs, finally ending up as the head of Primus: Antartica in command of three men and a cyborg penguin.

I voted, Thing, She-Hulk, and Thor since my bricks seem to closest in inspiration from them at least in attitude.

My main brick, Scales is more physically close to The Thing, but he's more a Dr. Strange type now. Especially in his NPC role nowadays.

I'd have to go with none of the above. I don't generally play bricks- the first two characters I ever built in champions were bricks (way back in '85) each played for a month or so. Other than that I have played a total of two bricks. Both were supersuits, so I have to lean on the "Iron Man" if I used a brick character, but it, along with strait energy projector, are my least used archetypes.

The THING. They aren't all necessarily ugly, they're just full of muscle, relativley articulate (though not played as geniuses) and can hold their own with the major bricks.

Well my favorites of the above are Thor and Colossus, but I think obviously the prototypical brick role model would be The Thing

I went with Supes, but that's not entirely accurate. Closer would be Nova. I like flying bricks, and while Nova's powers are pretty similar in the grand scheme, (Strength, Defenses, Flight) he also has the bucket head helmet for some Life Support as well as a radio and enhanced senses with IR vision.

Also it's more the mentality of Nova. Either the young hero desperately trying to do what is right or the more jaded/cynical hot-head who doesn't use many of the muscles above the neck but who follows orders and can be counted on to get the job done. The latter is always a fun role to play. The team leader usually hates me right up until it comes time to fight something. ;)

I voted The Thing and The Beast ... most often, my bricks have lower Strength and lower Defenses, but Martial Arts and higher Dexes (kind of a brick/martial artist mix), and I play a lot of scientists (because nobody else does). The Thing has always been one of my favorite characters, just for his gruff exterior, but heart of gold personality, even if it is a bit cliche'd.

I'm also a big fan of Distinctive Features and characters who can't pass for human in a dark room.:D

I love Bricks, and have played many over the course of my role-playing career. At one time or another, I have taken inspiration from all those listed and a few others.

I selected She-Hulk cause my main Champions character, Dog Girl, was a female brick, very friendly and positive in demeanour. Her closest analogue in comics was Dumb Bunny of the Inferior Five, however.

I'd like to play a character with the Thing's personality, some time but I've yet to do so.

I once tried to play a (flying) brick with the base personality based on Jeeves. I'm not sure I managed to get it quite right though.

I went ahead and chose three answers.

Superman - 'cause he's the classic flying boyscout brick. Helps little old ladies across the street and stops runaway trains from jumping into the intersection.

Captain Marvel - I like the "chosen one" aspect of Cap. Also I identified heavily with Billy Batson when I was a kid.

The Hulk - He's big, he's green, he picks up tanks by the cannon barrel and swings them like 50 ton baseball bats. The Big Green Machine fulfills all the "unstoppable" and "indestructable" qualities of brickhood.

I'm also partial to the power-armor bricks. I've made & played more Iron-Man inspired characters than all the others combined.

I went with the Big Blue Boyscout, Blue-Eyes and the Sensational You-Know-Who.

I've played two bricks ever. One was a guy who had PHd's in Nuclear and Astro Physics, and had gotten his powers in a very "fantastic four" way. He was the 'dumb' one on the super team, amazingly.

The other was Malique, a super-intelligent ape with cybernetic arms and anime missiles... from The Future... it sounds pretty terrible now, and maybe he was, but he was very fun and wasn't the only anthropomorph. I had "the 30th Century Fox" to play off of.

But yeah, either bouncy and furry or super-smart scientist. Definitely beast.

I couldn't vote because Wonder Man wasn't listed. Woe is me.

My favorite brick I've ever played was my 3rd Edition attempt at something akin to the Blob. I ramped up his DI and lots of KB resist and clinging. I named him "Inertia" and he was one of my more favorite characters. I will probably re-vamp and reintroduce him as a villian in current game. Should prove to be fun!

I chose the Thing and I'm not ashamed to say that I'm not very original when I play a brick. Unlike nearly every other super type, to me the Thing is a stereotype of the role a brick can play in a group. So, as a brick I'm gruff, somewhat nihilistic, overconfident about my strength and act like I'm everybody's big brother.

Come to think of it, it's the same way when I play a dwarf, except I'm also a raging alchoholic and speak with a Scottish accent.

I selected all but Superman, Thor, Captain Marvel (Shazam) and Lobo.

These are all too powerful.

I have Juggernaut as Juggernaut. But then I have Dr Doom as well.

I am working on a Sarah Douglas Ursa as an idea of what is too powerful.

Most brick characters that i start out with are a amalgamation of both Big Blue[Superman] and the Big Red Cheese[Capt.Marvel,at least that what his enemies call him] I sometimes play around with combining Supreme [Image]
with Samaritan because they are at least copies of the man of Steel.

I picked She-Hulk,
The reasons are simple and not just for raw power. She exemplifies breaking the Brick tradition of being big and stupid, She is also a great team player and willing to mesh with any group.

She has the intelligence to use tactics as well as is rarely out of control and makes a good adition to any roster for sheer power or by dint of personality.

OK I have to put my two cents worth in here.

From the choices provided by Hermit and based upon the sole Champions hero I've ever made and played I had to choose the Juggernaut. My character (Rook, just check out Shrike's "Millenial Men" post and you can find his stats there) is most similar to Juggy only in that I'm building him with the points I earn to give him a defense against everything I can think of. Its not a total defense as in it blocks out completely but the goal is so that nothing will ever affect him 100%, or atleast not the second time I run into it:D . Shrike is a devishly clever GM sometimes and will hit where and when you least expect it.

I have always liked the Juggernaut though because in the Marvel universe he is the biggest and baddest but not strongest brick on the planet, and he's NOT a good guy or even a sometimes good guy. He is strictly out for himself and could care less about world domination. He just wants to do his own thing. I always like it when a hero sees Juggy walking down the street minding his own buisiness (not breaking any laws) and feels it is his civic duty to stop "The Unstoppable Juggernaut ". Then proceeds to get his/her butt kicked by Juggy. I also like how Juggernaut is loyal to his true freinds, few though they are. He is just a great all around not evil but certainly not good guy either. IMHO of course.

As a kid I collected the HULK (green is my favorite color after all) and my favorite time period for Hulk was when Peter David was writing and Hulk had Banner's intelligence and Hulk's power. He had the best of both worlds and none of the downsides and the stories were well written IMO.

I would never consider Superman, Captain Marvel, or Thor in the Brick category though. Their in the category I'm-so-cool-I-can-do-practically-anything-I-want-and-I-can-do-it-better-then-most-anyone-else. I always liked the Spider-Man types who have a select group of small to medium powers that meshed well together and played smartly could take down much more powerful foes.

I don't think I've ever played a brick except in a pulp game, where he was modelled more on Norm from Sin City, and one superhero game where I wouldn't say he was modelled after any comic book bricks that I can think of. Physically he looked like Justice from that Marvel spin-off universe, but his attitude was..hmmm...I dunno, I can't remember well enough as it's been too many years and I only really played him twice. I recall I was still developing him, he was more quiet and silent than anything else - but that was also because he was deaf.

One of my longest run characters was partially based (in my mind) On Thunderbird from the very beginning of the New X-Men (Uncanny X-Men #96) I loved the combination of speed and strength.
