I just booked my room in Indianapolis. I got it cheaper that waiting for the housing block to open, and I never have luck with the hotel lotto.

One thing for sure I don't want to get stuck 6 miles away. I would really appreciate a room closer. I am hoping 2011 will work for me.

I'll be at the Sheraton, which is a quick walk to the convention center.

I've got a few partly finished Big Brawls ready for next year. I'm leaning toward Sweeps Week, in which a bunch of television shows fight each other for ratings. A team of standard game shows against a team of reality shows. Survivor has the power to vote one opponent off, and Jeopardy can only be attacked in the form of a question, for example.

What is an excellent idea?

What is an excellent idea?
It would only apply to actual attack names. So Wheel of Fortune could attack with Can I Buy a Vowel?, but not with Big Money!

I'm hoping to make it in 2011 myself. Fingers crossed.

I'm also considering:
* Smurfs vs Fraggles vs Borrowers
* Schoolhouse Rock vs Dr. Seuss
* Big Brawl Under the Sea
and a few others.

I'll be in a cheap hotel somewhere out on the bypass. I can get a suite w/a kitchen and even after parking fees it's still less $$$ than staying downtown.

Oh, and I'll definitely be running Terracide again. Not sure what kind of adventure just yet....

RexMundi
Nov 15th, '10, 02:46 PM
Park at the Sheriffs Garage......you walk 4 or 5 blocks tops but you save a half weeks pay.

~Rex.....has plans......on the other hand, really didn't miss giving Gencon LLC his money or time this last year......

Barton will attend and GM as usual. I have lodging lined up. Maybe this year do Be A PulpHero games???

Nov 15th, '10, 06:32 PM
Sounds fun. I just ran Marvel Zombies at U*Con and it was great. 6 players and finished on time. Lotsa fun. My daughter will be in attendance this year, so fewer events run by me.

mudpyr8
Nov 15th, '10, 06:33 PM
Probably, Marvel Zombies, Fallout: New Vegas, and Narosia. Sprinkle with some Be a Heroes.

hooligan x
Nov 15th, '10, 07:24 PM
I suspect I'll run three games. Front-runners are a Saturday Morning Cartoon Hero, Brass City Nocturne (a steampunk Hero adventure), and a Pulp Hero story.

Alright I have made reservations at the Downtown Comfort Inn. Close enough to walk to convention center and a whole lot cheaper then being connected to the convention center.

OK I get to go to gencon in 2011. NO seriously Mattingly , I get to go. Sooo I need help stat. Where should I stay? Where is the Hero action at? I am bringing my son corwin, and a couple of friends. I dont mind walking a bit to get a decent room rate.

Help Hero Bon Konibi...you are my only hope...

yamamura
Nov 16th, '10, 08:12 AM
Well the Comfort Inn is about a 10 minute walk from the Convention Center and is reasonably priced (About 1/2 the cost of the Hotels directly connected). So I would advise that. It will be great to meet you Thag!

I have personally never stayed there but did attend the HERO party there in 2009. I ended up at a Holiday Express which was 6ish miles away and had to spend a good amount of time everyday traveling there and finding parking. This place is only about a half mile away.

We have our room as well:at the Omni. OddHat loves their omelets. Also next year I'll actually be able to walk, which will be nice. I had to spend a lot of this year sitting on my butt.

I very much enjoyed the Omni, especially since all of my events were there.

You could have a Kewpie Doll, among others.

I'm not sure where I'll be staying. I enjoyed rooming with Dave M the few times we've done so, so Dave, I'm open to that again.

Karmakaze
Nov 17th, '10, 09:05 AM
I'm planning to go. One of the people I usually stay with is home during the day, so we usually let her "camp" the housing rush. (The last year that I camped the system, both she and I got the hotel across the street. IIRC, I donated my reservation to someone on these boards because we didn't need two rooms.)

I have no idea what or how much I'll be running. I used to always run just enough hours to get the free badge (generally sixteen hours), but travel and housing costs eclipse the badge cost at this point. I certainly have enough material, but I'm not sure of my energy level anymore. Old age, I tell ya...

Susano

Some one explain the ticket system to me...
Each game has a maximum number of players. "Game X, 4 - 6 players, 4 hours." You can buy tickets to that game, if there are some left, for $1 per hour (or something pretty close to that price). Before the convention, your badge and your tickets will get mailed to you.

Or, you can buy generic tickets, which are good for any game. But then you're not guaranteed a spot at the table. You just show up to the game you want, and if there's an unsold ticket, or a no-show, or the GM has an extra character, then you can get in.

hooligan x
Nov 19th, '10, 03:43 AM
I usually get 2-3 no-shows on games I run. I fill the table with players holding generic tickets. I also bring more characters than slots sold in case people want in.

Susano
Nov 19th, '10, 04:53 AM
Some one explain the ticket system to me...

I understand it goes like this:

You have two sides, one out in the field and one in. Each man that's in the side that's in goes out, and when he's out he comes in and the next man goes in until he's out. When they are all out, the side that's out comes in and the side thats been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out. Sometimes you get men still in and not out.

When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out, and when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in. There are two men called umpires who stay all out all the time and they decide when the men who are in are out. When both sides have been in and all the men have out, and both sides have been out twice after all the men have been in, including those who are not out, that is the end of the game!

mudpyr8
Nov 19th, '10, 07:03 AM
I try to run games that draw in people who aren't Hero gamers, that are recognizable beyond the scope of the tabletop (Like Left4Dead or Fallout).

THURSDAY, AUGUST 4TH 8:00 AM - 2 PM

RPG 1118224 Paranoia Trek X: Nemesi?...Nemesises?...Lots of Traitors!

Please complete your 10 yearcycle mission: to exhaust old plots, to pay lip service to source material, to boldly hammer the final nail before the reboot. That is all. The Computer is your friend.

We have six years of rich campaign history, but back story is kept to a page.

FRIDAY, AUGUST 5th 6PM - MIDGNIGHT

RPG1118226 Cajun Chaos

That's the least of their problems. Terror has decided to scratch back.

Why, yes. It IS our 13th year of running our signature event at Gen Con! Pop culture and gaming icons duke it out in the ring. It's the only slugfest where good roleplaying increases your chances to win! The only game with cool prizes for all players! The only game with color commentary by Triumph and Dr. Phil! It's almost as much fun to watch as it is to play, so stop by and see why so many call this "The Best Event at Gen Con!"

GM: David Wulatin System: Hero System, 5th edition

Questions? Comments? Compliments? Constructive Criticism? Flames? Post them here. Thanks to everyone who has supported our events, and we look forward to seeing you again in August!

Two things --

1) I really want to play in Can of Whupass 2011... but it looks like I'll be getting in as an exhibitor... so I''ll have to see if I can get into the game with generics.

2) I'm considering bringing my Left 4 Dead Hero materials and running some demos in one of the open gaming areas. I'd love to run it in the dealer's room, on an open table near the HERO Booth, but I'm not sure that'll happen.

While I can't promise anything, I can say that we've never had to turn away a player who had generics. Also, any player with generics would be automatically accepted if they were playing a shared character with someone who had an event ticket. Hope we see you there!

I shall be returning to GenCon!

All the way from Jalalabad, Afghanistan, I have reserved my room at Wingate by Windham (I stayed there for GenCon '09.)

It's only a 5 mile, but completely straight, shot to downtown from the hotel, so I don't mind the drive, and I had really good luck with parking last time (fingers crossed.)

I can't wait to get back from this G-d forsaken deployment and see all of you Hero Board Denizens, who I haven't seen in 2 years.

Oddhat and Satinkitty, I'm looking at you two in particular, we must do lunch/meal/liquid refreshments of some kind during the Con.

I might be able to get my best friend from Boston to come out, but if that falls through I might have a spare hotel bed available. I'll keep you guys posted if a space becomes available.

I'll be home soon, I'll catch you all later!

I'm getting serious this year. If all goes well, the Terracide sourcebook for Star Hero will be released, and some madness has possessed me to run four games. Last year went so well, I'm doing the same line-up: Kamaranthin, Terracide, and Kazei 5; but with twice the Terracide action this time around to celebrate finishing the book. Here's the details:

Game ID: RPG1122930
Title: River of Deceit
Description: Vicious rumors about the Sanguinaries of the River Within Enclave are turning the city against the so-called Blood Magi, and the task of clearing their name falls upon a cabal of apprentices investigating unsolved murders in the face of city-wide persecution.
Event Type: RPG
Game System: Hero (Kamaranthin; Fantasy Hero)
Rules Edition: 6th
Start Date & Time: Thursday Aug 4th; 2pm
Duration: 4 hours
Location: Crowne Plaza :: Conrail Stn :: 3

Game ID: RPG1122943
Title: The Admiral's Daughter
Description: Finding the admiral's daughter may be the key to ending the occupation of an entire star cluster by hostile forces. But why did she travel into occupied territory without telling her father? His daughter's personal agenda could spell disaster for everyone.
Event Type: RPG
Game System: Hero (Terracide; Star Hero)
Rules Edition: 6th
Start Date & Time: Friday Aug 5th; 2pm
Duration: 4 hours
Location: JW Marriott :: 311 :: 2

Game ID: RPG1122945
Title: None Dare Call It Treason
Description: A defector has information which could reverse the course of the war and lead to the destruction of the invasion fleets. But a single mistake could bring mankind's alien allies into the conflict against both sides, in a war with no winners.
Event Type: RPG
Game System: Hero (Terracide; Star Hero)
Rules Edition: 6th
Start Date & Time: Saturday August 6th; 2pm
Duration: 4 hours
Location: JW Marriott :: 311 :: 3

Game ID: RPG1122948
Title: Escape From Outbackistan
Description: After the zombie plague of 2112, the only safe place left for humanity is Genesis Station, orbiting high above the ruins of Earth. A few espers, cyborgs and replicates escaped the worst of the plague, but can they escape from the wastelands and reach Genesis Station before a horde of zombie bikers and psychotic espers destroy their last chance to reach orbit?
Event Type: RPG
Game System: Hero (Kazei 5; anime/cyber/post-apoc. Hero)
Rules Edition: 6th
Start Date & Time: Sunday August 7th; 2pm
Duration: 4 hours
Location: JW Marriott :: 311 :: 1

These are mostly "serious" games, except the last one 'cuz I expect to be completely brain-fried by Sunday morning. "Escape From Outbackistan" will be a grindhouse zombie kill-fest cyberpunk anime post-apocalyptic genre mash-up extravaganza, brains strictly optional. :snicker:

I think I'd need more of an idea on the type of hand holding you need. Essentially, it's similar to any kind of online shopping you find things you want and put them in a shopping cart to purchase.

And some suggestions on games to play.

What type of role-playing games do you like? Take, for example, my games:

If you like a more dramatic angsty type of game but still with some fun bits, I'd recommend SuperSquad America and its ongoing continuity built on the team having to deal with moral dilemmas and other tough questions.

If you a superhero game that is a lot lighter in tone, I'd recommend my Remarkable Wrong-Righters game.

And finally if you're looking for light pulp adventure, try my Friends of Justice event.

Dave mattingly, would your monuments game be a good one for a first timer?

Like Susano, I have also played this and have had fun.

I'm not so sure there aren't Hero events running every minute of typical gaming hours at the con (8am-1am). I count about 110-115 events using some version of the Hero System. I think only the D&D-related systems (D&D, d20, Pathfinder, etc.) have more events.

1. Are there any powers that I should stay away from?

2. It says the Char should be 400 points. I'm assuming thats 325/75 as the spread as outlined in 6th ed?

Thanks!

Howdy!

Also about BYOB: Is it going to be a "mission/adventure" or a straight-up context-free brawl kind of thing? Also, should the matching complications be ones that could be plausibly relevant in a one-shot, or should we just make the chars as if it was going to be a campaign?

Finally, do we still have to make two chars if we get one pre-approved here first? I have a couple of concepts, but as I refine them I'm getting more and more unhappy that I won't get to play one of them. ;)

I can't claim anything other than sheer luck. I completely spaced out the registration time, and it was a half-hour past when I came in from mowing the lawn and my wife reminded me about it. Only got a portion of the events on my wish list, and the Star Wars game was sold out. So, I spent the next hour or more rearranging my schedule, and was just about done when I noticed that the Star Wars game on my wish list (which I hadn't bothered to remove) wasn't greyed out. Hit the button, got the game...and then spent ANOTHER hour rearranging my schedule to fit it in.

There was no luck regarding the Dresden Files, though. I think there were only five different Dresden Files games, and all of them were sold out. At least my wife got into one of the slots for The One Ring RPG (she's a BIG LotR fan).

I did manage to get into one of the PS238 games however, on Saturday evening.
That's the one my wife and daughter are in, I believe. My schedule is free until 7 pm, so I may stop in and watch for a bit (if no one minds).

Hey everyone,

Because a friend had an unexpected project develop at work and will not be able to attend GenCon with me, I now have a spare bed available if someone is looking for a room for the Con.

If you are looking for a room to split within easy driving distance to GenCon PM me and we will work out the details.

I have a room reserved at Wingate by Windham, which is just under 6miles from the convention center (and it's a straight shot down one road, so no chance on getting lost going to and fro.)

I come with good references, just ask my previous GenCon roomates: HeroGame luminaries Scott Bennie ('07) and Scott Heine ('09)

The room has been reserved from Wednesday (03Aug2011) through Sunday (07Aug2011.)

I just found out that none of my Champions events that I submitted are listed in the on-site book. Six events submitted. None found. Why can't GAMA do a direct event submission set-up like GenCon has? Unless they're somehow in another section of the book, I'm not running anything this year

While Ill be arriving Wednesday, It might be pretty late, as in 9 or 10 pm, as my wife needs to at least work a 1/2 day before coming home to let me leave. I take care of the autistic kid, so she has to relive me.. I am hoping that I can get someone to cover for me at least a couple of hours....so I might leave Oak Ridge around 12.

According to Mapquest, its about a 7ish hour drive.

Should I buy generic tickets now and have them in my folder thats getting mailed to me, or get them there??

Pastymage
Jun 20th, '11, 11:30 AM
I've never had any trouble with getting tickets and badges through the mail from them - the will-call lines can be long depending on when you get there, but they're usually pretty fast. Even with delivery, you'll still have to wait in a line for the swag bags (or lately, the "one die, one ok chick-fil-a coupon, and a smattering of useless crap" bags), though depending on the timing those lines sometimes drop to nil.

As for buying on-site, you're at the mercy of the general reg/ticket lines...I've seen them open side booths solely for buying generic tickets occasionally, but they run them at odd hours.

mattingly
Jun 20th, '11, 03:32 PM

Ohh so there is a swag bag?? When or where do you get it.?? Dragoncon used to have great bags, but the last few years, there has not been anything...

The bag booths are usually on either end of the row of registration/ticket booths. You have to let them notch your badge, one bag per badge. The contents have been firmly meh the last couple years, though there's always been a free die (from Crystal Caste, I think?).

Ill order some tickets tonite....how many should I get??

Two generics is good for a standard 4-hour slot - almost every RPG I've played at GC has had no-shows and let in one or two people with generics, but no guarantees.

I think one ticket gets you a 10-minute session in the battletech pods, if that's your thing.

So gauge how much free time you think you'll want to try to fill with events the first couple days (not counting dealer room time) and buy that many tickets. If you run out, you can buy more late Friday or Saturday, when the lines are less brutal. If you have extra, you've got two more days to find things to do with 'em.

The Widening Gyre (pulpy steampunk action with a touch of gothic horror, by yours truly) should be available at the Blackwyrm/Hero booth as well! So kindly consider a purchase! :help:

While I am not a big fan of Steampunk (Vernesque machines I do not like), I do like a Victorian settings and Horror. So I will definitely get it Bill.

Since Hermit's book is from Blackwyrm, I assume the signing will be at the Hero Games/Blackwyrm booth (412).

What he said :)

And Bill, I am sorry you won't be there but I hope your book sells like hotcakes, hotcakes wrapped in nude magazines...

Hermit, I'd like to meet you but I'll be in a game on Saturday afternoon. Would you PM me your cell number and maybe I can meet you later on Saturday ?

Exactly how long I'll be there after the book signing is hard to say. A friend and I will be driving back to East Tennessee that night.

(I'll try to get that number to you anyway though, just in case)

The only way I was going to make it this year was by volunteering.

I'm working for Terrorwerks. They have me scheduled for the morning shifts. As I understand it, my job will be to don a costume, act like a big scary monster, and die dramatically.

I hope to make it to the Wednesday night get together to meet some of you folks face-to-face. It was fun last year though I couldn't stay long. As everyone else has said, PM me if anyone's interested in doing anything.

I'm running games on Fri & Sat @ 2pm (1400hrs) that still have openings. I realize you're just finishing up work at that point, but I think we can save you a seat.

I've got one Thursday at 1900 hours that still has some openings.

Monumental Battle: Giant statues come to life to duke it out. Watch the Statue of Liberty pound the Easter Island head with her torch. Gasp as Mount Rushmore tramples the Sphinx. The very Earth is your battlefield!

Can I bring along a hot gamer chick if I talk her into coming?

Not just total speculation, I have one in mind but she's heavily into fantasy and as I recall you're running science fiction?

Heh, now I think of it, might be fun to play a game while still in costume. Even a costume I've just been running around in and getting killed in for five or six hours.

Who else here is going to be in Xavier's games?

Friday and Saturday I've got Terracide demos -- definitely SF. Previews here (http://www.herogames.com/forums/entry.php/1879-Terracide-Adventure-The-Admiral-s-Daughter-%28intro%29) and here. (http://www.herogames.com/forums/entry.php/1888-Adventure-Intro-None-Dare-Call-It-Treason)

I have a mostly open schedule and a fistful of generic tickets, hoping to find games with no-show players. At my last GenCon, I had a "sold out" game with 2 players and had to recruit passerbys just to run.

As a tool to keep all Hero games full, I am thinking of setting up a Hero Gamers Twitter feed for GenCon, to announce game start times and empty slots, etc. Any GM could get the password and post.

Does anyone like the idea and does anyone use twitter?

My games are at the following times:

Thursday 8:00 AM: Remarkable Wrong-Righters (Light-hearted Champions, 8 players, 4 hrs) Omni McClellan Hall Table 5
Saturday Noon: SuperSquad America (More angsty "moral dilemma" Champions, 8 players, 6 hrs) Omni McClellan Hall Table 8
Sunday 8:00 AM: Friends of Justice (Pulp Hero, 8 players, 4hrs) Omni McClellan Hall Table 5

All my events are sold out, but I actually have nine characters available for SuperSquad America and there are likely to be no-shows.

I just finished working a sixteen hour day. So that means double writing tomorrow as well as sleeping a lot. Currently, I'm doing laundry, prepping coffee, and getting ready to drop off my car at the auto dealership in the morning, since I got rearended two weeks ago. If I grit my teeth or twitch randomly, that's real pain and not reaction to game events.

Number of days off since Origins: Two. :)
