I been wondering how people approach GMs running with new characters.

Tough question. I usually ask what they are looking for or try and see what niche isn't occupied. My favorite types of characters to play aren't "Ceiling" guys anyway, I like, Martial Artists with piles of Skills not powers, Low End Bricks like, oh Luke Cage or Megalith, Wizards along the mold of Dr. Occult, or higher end characters perhaps with serious drawbacks like say, T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents.....

Mostly though, I'll play anything. :D My general tendancy though is to go for Character over Number of Dice, so I tend to back away from the ceiling, and aim for something I can push for or evolve to.

Speaking of that I need to retool that character. He's a bit squishy. :D

At cons I usually look for games where the GM has already has the characters pre-done. For other games I have an archer character which is easy to scale to what ever levels the GM wants for his game.

I have found that the Archer character in the folder is one of the best ones to carry around with you. They're really easy to retool for various games on the fly, especially if one is playing an extra chair that opened up and there are not enough pregens, and a lot of campaigns tend not to have an Archer character.

It's not funny, being squished is a real concern to those of us that play normal people. :D

I find the best way to make new friends is to immediately contest them for their position and niche in a group. Conflict is drama!

Nah, that just ends in tears. I usually bring the guy that we all know is insanely effective in games but roleplayers tend to avoid because they don't get to be centerstage very often, the buffmaster/combat medic/nimble distraction/gadgetman. It's the guy who sets the badguy up for the powerhouses to take down and also keeps the other players in play.

This guy can be a pain for GMs because he really requires the scene to be described in detail to best shape it to his team's advantage. Taunting also doesn't work against badguys with no buttons to push so he's not at his best against Gronds.

My only problem, as a GM, with the underpowered people, is that while they may be cool, the players do tend to get upset when they do get squished, even if they are facing a major baddie.

Ex:
GM: "Mechanon completes the firing sequence and uses the Wave Motion Cannon against the team. Everyone on the team take 20 Killing and 60 Stun."
Mr Tough Brick: "Argh! That hurt, but give me a second and I'll pay you back in kind."
Mr. Average Super: "Yeek!! I took some body and stunned all to hell. One more hit like that and I am toast."
Mr. Underpowered: "Wimper!!! I am GM'd and bleeding to death." Stomps out in a rush.

I am GM'd...
I love that one! I have been fortunate enough to have played with good GM's that didn't do that to me.

I picked "loved by all GMs" because I usually create a character that is at the high end of what the limits are but without min/maxing or being tricky about it. Especially at a Con or other one off, I want to play out the game within the framework of what the GM planned. If you try to break out of that framework you are probably the only one in the entire group having a good time.
