I had a question that came up in one of my recent gaming sessions regarding how HD calculates costs for compount powers

it appears that HD is calculating the real cost (ie.e # of char. pts spent) for each power in the compund power seperately and adding the results together.

is this correct? if so can you tell me where in the rules, FAQ, etc this is stated as being the case

Thanks

It is correct, except in the case of an EC. In the case of an EC, HD uses a "weighted" value based on the Active Cost of each Power, applying a percentage of the EC "bonus" and then applying Limitations.....all according to the rules of the system. This was all done with Steve's approval and review.

I see

can you tell me _where_ in the rules this is covered. my review of the base book does not mention compound powers.
or how they should be calculated.

I'm not sure offhand....at their base, Compound Powers are no different from regular Powers....You can buy an Energy Blast and a Flash separately and use them both together, or you can buy them in a Compound Power and use them both together. The Compound Power is just a handy way of keeping items that are part of the same physical construct in one place.

It is also used in joining/Linking multiple Powers into one Framework slot. This is discussed in FREd under Power Frameworks and is also discussed in the FAQ.

I believe that the FAQ will also have the full details on how you calculate the cost of an EC slot when there are multiple Powers with varying modifiers.

IIRC the Compound Power option was added to HD early on to allow Linked Powers in Elemental Controls.

Though not specifically mentioned, Compound Powers do exist in FRED IIRC -- the technique is used in some of the Sidebar Powers.

Its just an organizational technique handy for making specific Power Constructs which take multiple actual Powers to represent a desired effect. Often Linking comes into play as well, but not always.
