Good evening all!
Descoto (07:56.22 PM)
Hi Steve
Mark A. Hart (07:56.31 PM)
Greetings!
Steven S. Long (07:56.40 PM)
Hope everyone's doing well this evening.
Tad Kelson (07:57.10 PM)

Steven S. Long (07:57.31 PM)
I myself am taking a break from STAR HERO research (a.k.a. watching Star Wars) to come chat. ;-)
Narf the Mouse (07:57.58 PM)
Awesome reason. :-)
mkultra (07:58.25 PM)
i'm saving up now for the Blu-Ray release in Sept.
Steven S. Long (07:59.22 PM)
No Blu-Ray player here (yet), so I'm content with the regular DVD version. ;-)
mkultra (07:59.56 PM)
I have one by default when I got a PS3 for xmas
Steven S. Long (08:00.05 PM)
Ah, gotcha.
I don't have any game consoles.
I prefer to invest my tech dollars in smartphones and tablets and suchlike. ;-)
Indiana Joe (08:01.18 PM)
Hello
Steven S. Long (08:01.22 PM)
Hi, IJ
We'll give it a few more minutes for stragglers to arrive and then I will fire up the Announcements Generator. ;-)

Whoever dies with the most toys wins
Indiana Joe (08:02.15 PM)
I hope it doesn't pop the breaker again.
Lord Liaden (08:02.24 PM)
Did I get in under the "straggler" wire? ;-)
Steven S. Long (08:02.31 PM)
You did, LL. ;-)
Indiana Joe (08:03.11 PM)
I need a vacation. And a winning lottery ticket.
Lord Liaden (08:04.08 PM)
IJ -- If possible, I recommend starting with the lottery ticket.
Steven S. Long (08:04.28 PM)
Whoops! Almost forgot to leave eBay feedback for the item I got today. Glad I remembered; I hate to overlook that stuff.
OK, I think we're safe to go to... announcements!
First, as you know we still have several books waiting to be printed. I have no specific new information there; Darren's continuing to work on the logjam. I will probably get an update tomorrow.
Second, CHAMPIONS BEYOND is now in layout!
Fred's already gotten the first four or five chapters squared away.
And I've even seen a few pieces of art, mainly from the Fraim Bros. but also some Sam Kennedy roughs (incl. the cover).
It's all looking pretty darn awesome if I do say so. ;-)
The Fraims did a great pic showing a squad of Golden Hunters of Malva, really inspirational cosmic-y stuff.
And as usual, the John Lees maps for the book are top-notch!
Third, I am hard at work on STAR HERO! I finished up Chapter One (the genre and subgenre analysis), and am currently working through Chapter Two (Character Creation).
As usual, I am spending a lot of time scouring books, movies, and TV for just the right illustrative quotes!
I'm not going quite as far overboard as I did with FH, but it's still a lotta quotes. ;-)
Poor Fred will likely shake his fist at me and once again vow revenge.
Fortunately for me, copious online collections of quotes from Star Trek, Star Wars, B5, Firefly, et al. are a *serious* help in finding good quotes. Yay for computerized searching!
And... I think that's pretty much it announcements-wise. Just keepin' busy here as we gear up for Summer Con Season.
;-)
Don't all speak at once now. ;-)
Lord Liaden (08:09.57 PM)
If worse comes to worst, the Cryptic guys should be good for hitting up for Star Trek quotations. :-)
Indiana Joe (08:10.07 PM)
Are we getting an sneak previews of the art for CB?
Steven S. Long (08:10.42 PM)
LL -- have no fear, believe me I'm pretty good at Trek quotes myself. ;-)
IJ -- I may post a few when I get finals from the artists. ;-)
Right now they're all still in the "roughs" stage though.
Lord Liaden (08:11.43 PM)
Are we getting any galaxy maps in CBY? Who's where, that sorta thing?
Indiana Joe (08:11.47 PM)
I figured as much.
Steven S. Long (08:12.34 PM)
LL -- no. Ther eare maps of individual planets, the Forum Malvanum, etc., but no galactic map. I see no need to lock us down any more than necessary. However, you can refer to the maps in TE for the location of many major planets, so it's not as if you're totally in the dark. :-)
Mark A. Hart (08:13.51 PM)
If STAR HERO is anything like FANTASY HERO, it will be one beautiful book. Just picked up FH and can't stop reading it
Steven S. Long (08:14.19 PM)
Mark -- thanx! Yup, the hope is to make it equally as gorgeous. In fact, I'm kinda hoping we can get Tyler Walpole to do the cover again... we'll see what his schedule's like when the time comes.
Fortunately, we already have a big chunk of awesome color art: specifically, free color photos from NASA, JPL, etc. of all sorts of galactic phenomena. We can pepper those things throughout the book as needed. :-)
They'll certainly make a big appearance in the solar system chapter, among others. No point commissioning an artist to draw Mars when we can get actual authentic photos and maps from the gub'mint. :-D
Indiana Joe (08:16.15 PM)
Assuming it isn't shut down... better grab those photos while the servers are still up. :/
Lord Liaden (08:16.46 PM)
Speaking of Fantasy Hero... Steve, I'm not asking for any commitments, but are you guys discussing the possibility of doing more for the line in 6E, beyond the genre book?
Ah, government photos -- finally, tax dollars at work. :-D
Steven S. Long (08:18.01 PM)
LL -- well, there's HSB and HSG, both of which have a heavy Fantasy use. So will MYTHIC HERO, I expect. Beyond that we'd certainly like to do more Fantasy oriented books -- it's all a question of finding subjects to cover that people want to buy books for.
They don't seem to want settings or adventures, so that kinda narrows down the possibilities.
But believe me, I'd like nothing better than to do more Fantasy.
Matthew Martin (08:19.47 PM)
Talk to WotC about doing Dungeons & Dragons: HERO Edition, perhaps? ;-)
Steven S. Long (08:20.02 PM)
Matthew -- LOL, I suppose ya never know. ;-)
Lord Liaden (08:20.24 PM)
Maybe someone will come up with some good ideas for fantasy HPAs.
mkultra (08:20.38 PM)
Their adventures don't sell either
Matthew Martin (08:21.03 PM)
(I saw someone claiming on EN World that 4E combat is slower than HERO combat. Startling.)
Steven S. Long (08:21.08 PM)
LL -- that's certainly possible. Maybe an idea for an HPA will strike me.
Lord Liaden (08:21.18 PM)
Mathew -- don't know about you, but I'd rather not sign over my soul to those sons of Orcus. ;-)
Steven S. Long (08:21.39 PM)
Matthew -- I'd take that with a grain of salt. Slow/fast has far less to do with system, IME, than the people playing. Those who are knowledgeable and pay attention get fast combats in any system.
Matthew Martin (08:22.04 PM)
Steve--True, but given the notoreity of HERO's combat pacing, just seeing the claim made was remarkable to me.
Mark A. Hart (08:22.36 PM)
My group can spin through a 4E combat pretty quickly when we put our mind to it (esp. if we leave out Monty Python jokes and Star Wars quotes)
Matthew Martin (08:22.37 PM)
LL--Given the erratic and lurching nature of their decisions of late, Demogorgon may be more accurate. :-)
Lord Liaden (08:22.48 PM)
It's actually perversely nice to hear a complaint about combat speed that's NOT about Hero.
mkultra (08:23.40 PM)
Steve, will you be holding back the cycberpunk/transhuman stuff in StarHero because of the future CyberHero or will there be roughly the same material that was in SH5th?
Steven S. Long (08:24.22 PM)
mk -- I would say *roughly* the same. In fact, the subgenre section discussing it is actually a bit more extensive than in 5E -- sort of laying the groundwork for CH, so to speak.
I may trim back some on the tech, not sure yet. I'm already going to be trimming a good bit out of the tech section since I can just refer to the HSEG.
Tad Kelson (08:25.19 PM)
Cyberhero is what I am looking forward to
mkultra (08:25.51 PM)
Nice...Kazei 5 is awesome but I want to see your take on the subject
Steven S. Long (08:26.22 PM)
Tad -- I'm definitely looking forward to writing CH myself. As soon as SH is done, I turn to doing CH research (i.e., reading lots of Cyberpunk novels and such).
Narf the Mouse (08:27.35 PM)
What's CH? Acronym's not ringing a bell.
Steven S. Long (08:27.41 PM)
Narf -- Cyber Hero.
Lord Liaden (08:27.42 PM)
Do you still get to deduct novel purchases as a business-related expense?
Steven S. Long (08:27.59 PM)
LL -- oh yeah, absolutely. Novels, comic books, movie tickets, DVDs, you name it. :-)
Assuming they relate to work, of course -- I don't deduct the cost of a movie ticket when I go to see a rom-com.
Tad Kelson (08:28.37 PM)
The original CH is one of my fave (along with the original Horrorhero) game books..two I still reference for gaming and writing inspiration
Lord Liaden (08:28.37 PM)
Man, now my job looks even suckier. :-(
mkultra (08:29.15 PM)
Just tell the IRS you're researching Romance Hero
Steven S. Long (08:29.37 PM)
Tad -- I think that when you see the new CH and HH, you will like them even better. :-)
For that matter, I deduct the Pulp-era maps and books I buy, since I plan to use them to write a book someday.
Matthew Martin (08:31.22 PM)
Is Horror Hero slated for hardcover, paperback, or undetermined?
Tad Kelson (08:31.24 PM)
Steve: again thanks for my fave game system
Lord Liaden (08:31.27 PM)
I always felt that the 4E CH and HH leaned a little too far toward presenting their authors' preferences in horror gaming, rather than a genre overview.
And cyber gaming, of course.
Steven S. Long (08:32.01 PM)
Matthew -- it hasn't been finally determined, but I suspect it'll be a hardcover if we can swing it. However, it might not be color art; color's not as much of a consideration for Horror as for Fantasy, Superheroes, or Science Fiction IMO.
Lord Liaden (08:32.40 PM)
Aside from lots of red, of course. ;-)
Steven S. Long (08:32.48 PM)
LL -- I think that's true, though to be fair 4E HH was seriously edited down from what the authors turned in. They presented like 13 distinct Horror settings, which was way too many for the company to publish at that time; they had to pick the 3-4 best.
Matthew Martin (08:33.11 PM)
Depending on the 'type' of horror, color art can actually be less suitable. (Color for splatter, yes; color for Gothic, no. I still love the graphic design of the 2E Ravenloft stuff.)
Steven S. Long (08:33.20 PM)
But I think with Darren, Jason, and Ken doing the writing, our HH is going to blow all other books on the subject outta the water. :-)
Matthew Martin (08:33.29 PM)
You did get the Dream Team for the book. :-)
Narf the Mouse (08:34.36 PM)
@Steve: Thanks.

Matthew -- I'll leave it up to our volunteer GM corps to decide if they want to do that. ;-)
Fellhard (08:40.27 PM)
can i ask a random question out of HSMA .. can anyone describe to me what a "chin block" is? i cant seem to figure it out on my own :-)
Steven S. Long (08:41.34 PM)
Fellhard -- Chin Block is the classic action hero's ability to take a punch square on the jaw and not be phased by it. ;-)
Fellhard (08:41.51 PM)
thank you SL
Steven S. Long (08:42.06 PM)
IOW... the "special effect" of the Block is "you hit me, but you didn't hurt me."
Lord Liaden (08:43.46 PM)
Pretty much de rigeur for Superman-style bricks.
Steven S. Long (08:43.59 PM)
And even the likes of Indiana Jones.
Fellhard (08:44.16 PM)
i appreciate Steven S. Long . and as always many thanks for your work . It is my dinner time .. hope to see you next week.
Narf the Mouse (08:44.24 PM)
Bye, Fell
Fellhard (08:44.46 PM)
i lost an "it" in there somewhere
Indiana Joe (08:44.50 PM)
Or that bald guy Indy fights in Raiders.
Steven S. Long (08:45.35 PM)
Bye, Fell!
Lord Liaden (08:45.37 PM)
Ever see the old George Reeves Superman TV series? Someone shoots him, he stands there grinning while the bullets bounce. But when the gun's empty the guy throws the gun at him -- and he ducks!?
Matthew Martin (08:46.30 PM)
LL--Well, kryptonite bullets aren't feasible--but kryptonite-lined guns are a different story. They kept trying to get the balance right so the radiation would transfer to the bullets, but it never worked out. :-)
Lord Liaden (08:47.09 PM)
And we have a No-Prize winner. :-D
Steven S. Long (08:49.18 PM)
All right, folx, since the conversation seems to've died down, I think I'll bow out and go continue my STAR HERO research. :-) See you next week, same Steve-time, same Steve-channel!

Yay for computerized searching!

can i ask a random question out of HSMA .. can anyone describe to me what a "chin block" is? i cant seem to figure it out on my own :-)
Steven S. Long (08:41.34 PM)
Fellhard -- Chin Block is the classic action hero's ability to take a punch square on the jaw and not be phased by it. ;-)
Fellhard (08:41.51 PM)
thank you SL
Steven S. Long (08:42.06 PM)
IOW... the "special effect" of the Block is "you hit me, but you didn't hurt me."
Lord Liaden (08:43.46 PM)
Pretty much de rigeur for Superman-style bricks.
Steven S. Long (08:43.59 PM)
And even the likes of Indiana Jones.
Fellhard (08:44.16 PM)
i appreciate Steven S. Long . and as always many thanks for your work . It is my dinner time .. hope to see you next week.
Narf the Mouse (08:44.24 PM)
Bye, Fell
Fellhard (08:44.46 PM)
i lost an "it" in there somewhere
Indiana Joe (08:44.50 PM)
Or that bald guy Indy fights in Raiders.
Steven S. Long (08:45.35 PM)
Bye, Fell!
Lord Liaden (08:45.37 PM)
Ever see the old George Reeves Superman TV series? Someone shoots him, he stands there grinning while the bullets bounce. But when the gun's empty the guy throws the gun at him -- and he ducks!?
Matthew Martin (08:46.30 PM)
LL--Well, kryptonite bullets aren't feasible--but kryptonite-lined guns are a different story. They kept trying to get the balance right so the radiation would transfer to the bullets, but it never worked out. :-)
Lord Liaden (08:47.09 PM)
And we have a No-Prize winner. :-D
Steven S. Long (08:49.18 PM)
All right, folx, since the conversation seems to've died down, I think I'll bow out and go continue my STAR HERO research. :-) See you next week, same Steve-time, same Steve-channel!
