View Full Version : Your character's theme song would be?
Hermit

I was watching the Daredevil DVD, when the bit with Elektra's work out came up. Evanescence's "Bring me back to life" was playing, and I was struck just how appropriate that was to the character. Others may disagree, but my point is that many super heroes seem to get their own song or even theme music in other medium.
So, if you had to pick a song that best represented your characters, which songs would you pick for each?
Off the top of my head, I think mine might go something like this:
Lone Star- The William Tell Overture. :)
Slammer- All Star, by Smash Mouth
Surge- Over my head, by Lit
Wildcard - Luck be a Lady, by Loesor I believe

Easy.
Major Victory : Pride - Saliva (patriotic butt-kicking song)

So many songs, so many characters.
Purple Haze's song, (ironically not the song he took his name from) would probably have to be Get it On by Kingdom Come.

Black Cat (a martial artist)- Black Cat by Janet Jackson (due to the name - Rather than the intent of the song.
Ballistic (ex cop supersuit) - Demolition man by Mannfred Man.

Blazing Arrow - sometimes just basic stereotypical Native American drum+chant music, other times 'Cherokee People"
My oldest character, long retired, Urban Druid, actually sort of had theme songs - he sung frequently and on one occassion went so far as to set up a whole PA system (this was when I ran him as an NPC, a hero gone mad and abusing his power, facing the PCs) for a battle blasting things like Fear's "I Love Living in the City". Actually, that might be more his real theme.

Bryce, nice choice of Sniper: Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner - Warren Zevon
Hmm, no one's picked "More Human Than Human" - Rob Zombie
As for my characters:
Spectrum : Headache - Liz Phair or possibly Telepathy by Lene Lovich wierd, headache just came on of the 2000 random song player; Probably not "Veteran of the Psychic Wars" by BoC
Calico: Not sure, but not Tom Jones' "What's new Pussycat"
Scales: Genisis 10 - Alan Parson project
I know there's a perfect song for Mr. Putty. I need to look into that one.
In college, we had redone the lyrics of ~100 songs for the themes of various heroes/villians. I wish I still had those.

Good call. Hmm, I have based several characters on songs...
Big john- a very large man in a fantasy game.
I know there are more, but right now i'mhaving a brain fart.
I'm almost tempted to make a character basedon Devo's "peekaboo" probably a villain. :)
"peekaboo, I See you, and I know what you do, cause I do it too.
Haw Haw Haw Haw"
:) did I remember the title correctly? :)

Ah, the web is a wonderful thing...
At least according to lyricsxp.com, they are:
"Well I don't know where they come from
But they sure do come
I hope they comin' for me
And I don't know how they do it
But they sure do it good
I hope they doin' it for free
They give me cat scratch fever
Cat scratch fever
The first time that I got it
I was just ten years old
I got it from some kitty next foor
I went and see the Dr. and
He gave me the cure
I think I got it some more
They give me cat scratch fever
Cat scratch fever
It's nothin dangerous
I feel no pain
I've got to ch-ch-change
You know you got it when you're going insane
It makes a grown man cryin' cryin'
Won't you make my bed
I make the pussy purr with
The stroke of my hand
They know they gettin' it from me
They know just where to go
When they need their lovin man
They know I do it for free
They give me cat scratch fever
Cat scratch fever "
I never knew them at all. It doesn't seem to fit though.

Raptor (Military mindset Batman-esque energy projector) Paint it Black, by the Rolling Stones.
Valentine (Cupid's daughter, Egoist) 's song is Valentine by Martina McBride.
The song inspired the creation of the character, and in the gameworld, the PC's secret ID is the performer of the song.

Hmm Theme song. I must ask the other players in the game that I am in what they would pick. I would probably modify the title of one of Warren Zevon's songs ("Excitable Boy" to "Excitable GIRL") for "St Barbara' or maybe Barry McGuire's "The Sins Of A Family" although this relates more to her background then her character and powers.

Oops ! Just thought of another appropriate song for "St B". "Playing With Fire" by The Rolling Stones. I cannot come up with a theme song for my angel possessed illusionist "Zianor" however (Except maybe "That Old Master Painter From The Far Away Hills". Nah ! Don't like that )

This is simplicity itself to answer because I created and burned a 2 CD theme disc for my players, containing themes for heroes and villains alike. Too bad I don't have it in front of me - I even wrote out the themes and who the theme was for in the CD case. I'll try a few that I can remember:
* A-team theme for Hero Group
* "Why should I worry?" from 'Oliver & Company" for cool hero
* I-Spy theme for detective hero
* Darth Vader's theme for Dr. Destroyer, though I've got a better one.
* "Our Time Has Come" from 'Cats Don't Dance' for toon character.
* Luca Blight theme from Suikoden II game for Firewing
* Snoopy skating on ice theme (can't remember title) for water heroine
* "Trail of blood" music from FF7 for Leech
* "Super motorcycle" from OMG soundtrack for college hero
um, these are but a few I remember offhand. I think I have in excess of 70 theme songs for various heros and villains. If I remember more, I'll post them.
Cyberknight
Oct 7th, '03, 01:03 PM
No, this Cyberknight isn't the published one (and no infringement of copyright or trademark is intended). Once the other players heard the song, "Honor to Serve" by Ray Bolz became the theme song-by-acclamation for my resident and long-serving Boy Scout-in-a-Can.

I consider these their themes not necessarily because of lyrical content so much as after I play these songs I'm in the mood to play the character.
Uncle Slam... Metallica, "Unforgiven" -or- Sarah McLachlan, "Full of Grace"
Anthem... Live, "Lightning Crashes"
Audra Blue... Stone Temple Pilots, "Big Empty" -or- Sisters of Mercy, "Lucretia, My Reflection"

While the players tended to think it was just a song about him being lonely, they didn't realize it was a prediction of his wife's death and his change to Monarch as well.
I used the Hunted CD (movie with Chrostopher Lambert) for ninja attacks and tended to use the Conan the Barbarian CD, especially Anvil of Krom for major climatic combats or important villain attacks.

'St Barbara's" theme song ! Hmm I can think of several that appeal from Rogers and Hammersteins "I'm Just A Girl Who Can't Say No !", Wagner's "The Ride of the Valkyries", Nancy Sinatra's "Lightning's Girl" , Something by Suzi Quatro "48Crash", "Devil Gate Drive", etc to INXS' "Suicide Blonde" ! If she were in an introspective mood she might even pick Barry McGuire's "The Sins Of A Family". It is however easy to imagine "St B" flying into action with most of these songs playing in the background !

I was, of course, wrong. Assault's theme song would be Australian pub rock from the late 70s/early 80s. Still very loud guitars, but with a slightly different following and style.
Picking an exact song is difficult. The best candidate I can think of is from slightly outside the timescale I suggested, but is still legitimate in terms of genre, and the band was around in the correct period.
"Die Yuppie Die" - Painters and Dockers.
Nucleon
Jul 4th, '05, 04:54 PM
Nucleon:"One Of These Days" on Pink Floyd's "Meddle" album. The song actually is at the base of this cosmically powerful entity.
Dominator: A huge absorbing brick with a SM twist; Black Sabbath's "Zero the Hero", including the little intro before, on the infamous "Born Again" album.
Bravewind, Native martial artist with a mystical boost, and a dashing vanguard fighter; The theme from the videogame "Turok 2", second level song; great music high-adventuring music, Nucleon says.
Generally speaking, surf rock makes an excellent super-heroic background, but maybe that's because we're so much silver-bronze age. Many of Nucleon's players "adopted" a surf song like "cheyenne" or "surf Rider".

(Warning: serious chauvinism for music of the late 1970s here.)
I ended up choosing "Hocus Pocus" by Focus. No lyrics (well, there's the yodelling and the maniacal laughter, but no words), cool song, and given that my character is based on a four-aspect Multiform with very different powers, nothing really covers all the bases.
I'm waiting for an Energy Blaster character to show up with "Lightning's Hand" by Kansas. Way too apropos.
Great villain background songs include "Knife Edge" by Emerson, Lake, & Palmer and "Gates of Babylon" by Rainbow. Actually, the latter would be appropriate for someone with a demonic origin (like Hellboy).
... And I'm waiting for Old Man to chime in on this thread with "Old Man Down the Road" by John Fogerty....

that makes me think, i wonder how a super heroic football game would go?
zornwil
Jul 6th, '05, 06:33 AM
That would be fun, maybe done as an informal super-team game of touch or tackle football. There'd have to be some sort of rules, though, such as touching your feet to the ground every 10 yards on the way to the goal or something, to prevent teleporters and the like from just automatically getting goals. Our group isn't big enough, although maybe the Justice Squad versus an NPC group such as the Outsiders or Fox Force Five.

Liane/Champion Wind: Almost anything cheery will do for Liane, but especially appropriate would be Peter, Paul, and Mary's "Weave Me the Sunshine." As Champion Wind... for my life, I can't think of anything more appropriate than the closing theme from "Battle of the Planets." And I mean "Battle of the Planets," not "Gatchaman."
Ika: She's a timelost cave girl. "Land of the Lost" is too perfect.
Amyrya: The only channeler ever to train in the Tower, get kicked out under permanent shield, free herself of it, be caught by the Seanchan and trained as a damane, then slip her own leash and lead a mass escape. She didn't believe in "impossible" things. "I Am A Pioneer," from Tenchi Muyo is utterly perfect.
Kitahr: "God Save the People" from Godspell. Change "God" to "Sun," and you've got her perfect theme (she's a Zenith)

I don't want to get off topic, but I posted this on another thread and I thought it might be relevant.
Ever notice how Action movie heroes become more badass when their music is playing? Here's why.
Personal Soundtrack: Change Environment 4" radius, -3 OCV Penalty, Personal Immunity (+1/4) (37 Active Points); No Range (-1/2) (25 Real Points)
I think I might also buy Images to Hearing linked to this power and link this power to it. That way everybody can hear the music.
Now that I think about it, reading the rules on Change Environment and Self Only again, the correct way to build the power is more like
Personal Soundtrack: Change Environment 1" radius, -3 OCV Penalty (15 Active Points); No Range (-1/2), Self Only (-1/2) (7 Real Points)
If you build it the other way, it makes your allies harder to hit too, but it also makes it harder for your allies to hit your enemies. Which would be handy for showing up everybody else, and isn't that what having a personal theme song is all about? :)
I think I'd also buy extra Presence for when the music is playing.
Wait, now that I look at it again, you can do the same thing with levels of DCV that cost END. I give up, let's just talk about music.

Volt "Proud to be an American." by Lee Greenwood. Just about perfect.
Olorin "You can do Magic" By America. Again, just about perfect.
Black Tiger- Olorin would suggest "Kung Fu Fighting" and get a nasty glare. The background music from "Batman Begins: would work.
Futurian "Imperial March" (Darth Vader's theme) form Star Wars. He has it play from anything nearby that can via his tech powers wheneve he is not in stealth mode.

While I doubt Zl'f would consider herself to have a theme song (she's not big on music) but if she did it would probably be something from Shostakovitch.
Personally, when I play Zl'f I always hear "Duel of Fates;" the almost frantic music from Star Wars: The Phantom Menace when Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi fought Darth Maul in the queen's palace on Naboo. Somehow the fast pace illustrates how quickly I see her being in combat.

Arron Lemonchewer. Turakian Age. "Loch Lomond" Traditional.
Corwyn the Cursed. Shadow World. Since his character concept developed into 'the emo centaur' he'd probably want something over the top which reflected his inner turmoil. So perhaps "Stricken" by Disturbed.
Jiro. Champions. "Life Burns" By Apocalyptica and The Rasmus.
Megara Lightpaw. Turakian Age. Being a thief Megara would steal the coolest swashbuckling theme tune he could think of. "Pirates of the Caribbean" (The film, not the ride, that's very important).
Owain Lissil. The Last Dominion. He wouldn't have a theme tune because he doesn't believe in making too much noise.

Okami -- "Shadow Warrior" from BoC
Maelstrom -- "American Badass" for the longest time, but now "Indestructible" by Disturbed

Thread necromancy must be Bubba's primary hobby...
Vigilwould either be 'Paint It Black' by the Rolling Stones or 'Du Hast' by Ramstein. Both fit him so well.
Siberian Tigerwould appreciate the humor of using 'Stray Cat Strut.':D Or for a serious choice, 'Primal Scream' by Motley Crue.
Redline would go with Motorhead's version of 'Cat Scratch Fever', 'cause he's got it pretty bad... :nonp:
For Dante it would be one of the the two songs that inspired me to make the character - Queen's 'The Show Must Go On.'
For any villian: 'I Want It All' by Queen.

Well, considering Deuce is in fact, the heroic identity of one James Bond, born in 1922 in Glencoe, Scotland...
I won't go there. It's too bloody obvious.
OK, anything by Dame Shirley Bassey.
Casey, my newest character, is a magically-animated 1969 Chevrolet Corvair. (Bad but unfounded Reputation- by 1965, the handling problems Ralph Nader had with Corvairs were in the past)
His song? "Born To Be Wild", by Steppenwolf.

Well, for almost all my characters, I tend to get "Ego is not a Dirty Word" by the Skyhooks at some point, but specifically...
Adam 218 - Last of a series of Bio-engineered Weapons. “I stand alone” by Godsmack.
Beastlord - "Trip Like I Do" by Filter and Crystal Method (Spawn OST).
Eagle’s Cry – Gadget using Martial Artist with a Kelvarite enhanced artificial voicebox. “Right Now” by Van Halen (love that guitar solo!).
Facet - "She's Got The Power" by Stan Bush. (So I'm a Sailor Moon fan.)
Gate - "Open Your Heart" by Crush 40 (Sonic Adventure #1).
Gee - "Look Up!" by Yellow Dancer (Robotech: New Generation).
Gigas - "Kick some @$$" by Stroke 9.
Grom - "I was made for loving you" by KISS.
Hardcase - "Body Hammer" by Fear Factory ("As of now/I am a tool/Of severe impact/Hammer down/Cause and effect/And create a new world").
Leatherback - "The Thing I Hate” by Stabbing Westward.
Nightwalker (http://www.herogames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=67641) - "Breakin' the Law" by Judas Priest
Platinum - "Little Less Conversation" by Elvis Presley & JXL.
Polecat - "One" by Filter (orig. John Farnham).
Professor Grey - "Liberi Fatali" by Nobuo Uematsu. (The Final Fantasy VIII opening theme).
Shiver – Empower by an accident involving cut-price cryogenics, he possesses ice powers and is radioactive, requiring him to wear a special suit of armour, lest he poison those around him. “Pain” by Four Star Mary.
Shadowfire - "Freak on a Leash" by Korn.
The Specter - "Land of Confusion" by Genesis.
Surge – Mutant Energy (Electricity) Projector. “Shock the Monkey” by Coal Chamber feat. Ozzy Osbourne (a cover of a Peter Gabriel track, I prefer this one).
The Swarmling - "The End is the Begining is the End" by the Smashing Pumpkins.
Tempest - Son of Thunder and Lightning, with the powers of both. “Thunderstruck” by AC/DC. (Not a commentary on his mother's parenting methods. :p)
Twilight – Former Ninja and now Martial Artist Extra-ordinaire. “Ultra” by KMFDM.
Whisper - "I Kill Children" by the Dead Kennedies.
Weldun - "Plowed" by Sponge.
Obviously, I'm not currently playing all of these at the moment.

Ferrous: Pacing The Cage, by Bruce Cockburn, performed by Jimmy Buffett (the perfect theme for the burned-out, elderly hero)
Liz Yasha: Girl Anachronism, by The Dresden Dolls
That's all I got right now...
Pariah
Aug 25th, '08, 12:04 PM
Amethyst: "Pax Deorum" by Enya - She's a member of a mystic order that has been protecting the planet for thousands of years. The song has just the right mysterious and monastic feel for her.
ColdFire: "Cold as Ice" by Foreigner - Pretty self-explanatory. Rush's "Cold Fire" got some consideration, too.
Desperado: "Desperado" by Linda Ronstadt. The song title was pretty obvious; the artist less so. Why not the Eagles' version? Well, if it comes down to a choice between five ugly guys and one pretty girl, that's no choice at all.
Fang: "Bad Moon Rising" by Credence Clearwater Revival - He's a reluctant werewolf.
Jack Diamond: "Stranger In Town" by Toto - 'How can a man who's a criminal be a hero to the kids?' Diamond has a reputation for the use of excessive force with criminals. It's not entirely accurate, but it's proven too useful for him to bother changing.
Magnetite: "Walking on Sunshine" by Katrina and the Waves - She's a happy, upbeat person. She also used to be a gymnast, and this was a song she'd often use for routines.
Morningstar: "It's My Life" by No Doubt - After losing her family, spending a year as a guest of the state, and fighting anger and clinical depression, she's decided it's time to take her life back.
Onyx: "Stop the Rock" by Apollo 440 - Can't stop the rock!
Pariah: "Sole Survivor" by Asia - He was kicked out of a secret mystical society and left for dead. Then he gained superpowers and became a hero.
Thunderstrike: "Shock the Monkey" by Peter Gabriel - He acquired this as his theme song after a fight with Professor Muerte several years ago.
Wild Card: "Luck Be a Lady Tonight" from Guys and Dolls - What can I say? Things just work out for him.

Time for an updated (I posted way back in the beginnings of the thread years ago).
Black Cat - Black Cat - Janet Jackson - Mostly title. The character Pre-dates the song.
Ballistic - Demolition Man - the Mannfred Mann Version. He tends to cause a fair amount property damage.
Sift - I put a spell on You - Screaming Jay Hawkins. She's a supermage. Alternately "My Boyfriend's back - Shirelles". She is dating the Sorcerer Supreme (who is young in this campaign).
Terminal Velocity - Runner - Mannfred Mann again.
Smokeater - Two of 'em. Burning for You - Blue Oyster Cult, Fight Fire with Fire - Kansas
Meeb - It's not Easy being Green - Kermit the frog.
Angelfire - She's a rock star first, super second. Her theme song would be one she wrote. :)
