View Full Version : Finding HERO @ Barnes and Noble?

Hey Steve,
I recently stopped by a Barnes and Noble owned store(actually B.Dalton, but same parent company) with the ISBN's of StarHERO, the HERO Sys Resource Kit etc and they had no record of these titles. I'd love to order it locally but they dont even have a record of it. I have been to a Borders on a trip once and they had it in thier system. Is HERO got a special deal with a particular distributor or something, cause the people at B.Dalton looked at me like I was nuts when I said it wasnt out of print and was released quite a while ago for some of the titles.

AFAIK our books should be listed in BOOKS IN PRINT, and our ISBNs should show up on proper searches (there may be some delay, but older books at least should show up). We have no exclusivity deals with anyone; those guys are overlooking something or there's a glitch in the system somewheres.

I took a look at the B&N web site...
http://search.barnesandnoble.com/OopBooks/oopResultsTitle.asp?userid=2WAD412Z5L&sourceid=00399898566851915791&bfdate=02%2D27%2D2003%2B00%3A10%3A32&title=Star+Hero&rstart=101&WID=39510556
Looks like there are 2 available....
As for the Resource Kit....no dice there....cant locate it anywhere (except my local store has a copy or 4 ....)
There were many copies of Steve's books and I saw a good number of Champions, Nija Hero, etc...
Hope that helps.

This actually takes you to a link for the old Star Hero written in 1989. I think Ghostnight was looking for the current one.
Searching by the ISBN number does not yield any matches. :(

Off Topic:
It's funny that even though they are basicly the same company, I have found that the customer servive at the local B Daltons pales greatly compared to the local B&Ns. In fact I almost never go into B Daltons any more after repeated surly answers or the "deer-in-the-headlights" look in response to questions.

While we're on the topic, what the chances of getting the HERO 5th Edition stuff on Amazon. I see all the old stuff there, but none of the new stuff.

I have noticed that online retailers (probbly due to the nature of their bottom line) gretly limit the products they do carry....
I could find nothing at Amazon...
I reciently acquired a D&D 3rd book for a game (which fell apart after 1 session! sould have saved the money for the plethora of Hero books)...
I got a deal, on the D&D book from buy.com (19.99)...so i went there and checked....no dice on Hero...
I guess they dont see it as "mainstream" enough to offer....
The only RPG's I could find in any quantity on the 2 were D&D.

If B&N have them, then that's a good resource on-line, it's just that I have my wish-list, etc. on Amazon and it's nice to have everything in one place... just laziness I suppose.

I don't mean to be dense, but why is it imperative to get it from a "mainstream" online retailer? What's wrong with ordering it from an online game retailer (assuming you have no FLGS near you)?

Oh... I do. I just usually get better discounts through the Bigger guys and my shipping is usually faster.

Does your local FLGS have a coffee shop inside their doors? I mean, come on! What's the use of going to your local gaming store if you can't buy the book, order a latte, and sit down to enjoy a good read? These gaming stores are so behind the times, it's pathetic.
:D

I have no problem's using an online retailer, however, I have a number of gift certificates and what not I'd like to use to get some HERO products. I dont have the cash to buy them, but got a number of GC's for christmas.

Any chance of us Canadians getting it at Chapters.ca? I checked and there's very little Hero stuff -- not much in Books in Print, either.

I was in a Barnes & Noble in Cape Cod yesterday, and they had the Serenity RPG there, and all I could think was, They have Serenity, but they don't carry any Hero products... what's up with that?
I know nothing at all about the publishing business, and I have no idea how a game company goes about getting its products onto the actual shelves of a big-name retailer like B&N or Borders, but I feel like it would be a great way to get the system in front of a lot more eyeballs.
I think that someone even casually flipping through FREd would quickly be impressed by how comprehensive the system is.
Side Note:
For buying the books online, I go to http://comicsnow.com , and I found a couple of retailers who still have FREd in stock by emailing just about every retailer on the Hero Retailers list. If anyone wants to know which ones wrote back and said they still have it, PM me.

Licensed products like that are far more likely to be carried by a chain bookstore, because they potentially have crossover appeal beyond just RPG players.

Well, offhand I can think of several things:
1. It's based on a popular franchise, and thus has appeal beyond RPG markets.
2. It's got Margaret Weis's name associated with it, and likely her use of her publishing industry contacts as well.
3. The Sovereign Press people are willing to take the risk of returns, and we're not. ;)
