Howdy all. I'm working on a character that has charges to boost his strength by taking a pill/potion. I've been reading and searching for a while now, but I can't seem to get the point total to come out correctly. Here's what I have so far:
STR Pill: +20 STR (20 Active Points); 4 charges (-1), IAF (-1/2), Gestures (-1/4) (Modifiers affect Base Characteristics)
I'm using Hero Designer 1.47 and it ends up costing me a whopping -6 points. The point cost changes, for some reason, whenever I raise/lower my actual Strength cost on the Characteristics screen. If I unclick the "Add Modifiers to Base Characterestics" check box, it ends up costing 7 points.

"Add Modifiers to Base Characteristic" is doing exactly what it says: it adds in the point difference when the specified Mods are applied to the base STR characteristic.
For instance, if you have a 60 STR and then purchase that Power with "Add Modifiers to Base Characteristic" checked, it will apply -1 3/4 of Limitations to the 60 STR.
The actual cost difference is 60 - (60 / (1+1 3/4)) = 60 - (60/2.75) = 60 - 21.8 = 38 points.
So 38 points will be taken off of the cost of the Power (what you save by applying -1 3/4 in Mods to a 60 STR).
If you don't check "Add Modifiers to Base Characteristic" then the base characteristic is never taken into account in the cost (i.e. the Modifiers aren't applied to your STR Characteristic) and you just have the cost of the Power to deal with.
+20 STR = 20 base points.
20 / (1 + 1 3/4) = 20/2.75 = 7.2 = 7 points.

More to the point, what you are really saying with this is that ALL your characters Base Strength and Extra Strength is IAF, requires Gestures, and has 4 charges which would be seriously disadvantaging.
Also, since you are using non-Continuous Charges, each Charge lasts for 1 Phase only. Probably want a little more duration there -- use the Continuous option under Charges for this. Strength is already Constant, so the option should appear.
