View Full Version : Who have you 'cloned'?

Naturally, I mean as in borrowing heavily, if not directly, from a published Comic Book Super hero.
I'm curious what, if any, are the concepts that are most successful adaptations that you find yourself using over and over.
This poll, like many of my other ones, means nada really, but is a fun way to pretend to 'keep score'. Multiple choices will be allowed :)

I try and make some of everything for NPCs/Villains. For player characters, I lean toward energy projectors and martial artists, none of which really fit the above categories. So Other. Though I love them super-patriot types.

Argh, good point. Heck, I should have put "One of the FF" as an option ;)
The Torch was, for a time, the very template for Energy Projectors in my games.

Actually, several of my oldest characters predate the comic characters they're inevitably compared to. I'm sure many old timers have the same problem.

Orion the Hunter a pre-Longbow Hunters Green Arrow Clone(my first champoins character
Thunder a Mary Marvel(based loosly on the MM in the adventure in the back of the JLA Sourcebook of the latest DCU RPG/with some Miricleman thrown in there) Clone
Cat[II] who is a clone of Cat[I] who is one of two twin daughters of Cat[II]. Cat[III] who is the rencarnated Cat[I] who also is the Adopted mother of Cat[IV] who is the twin sister of Cat[I](needless to say this all involves a lot of time travel from the 1880's to the 31st century :D )

The ones that come to mind are a Cap clone (with a spiffy cape instead of a shield -- yeah, that's me, a font of creativity at age 15), a Bullseye clone (in powers, anyway - one of my favorite PCs), and a butch mythological character (Herne the Hunter) that I guess had his roots in Thor.

Mine is Captain Marvel.
Thundrax, my longest running PC was a transforming teenage brick with a mystic origin, and Omega, my ToT PC, is an Iron Age squish of the Big Red Cheese, Supes, and some kid who swears a lot.

All I can say is that I'm glad it's not the early/mid '90s any more. I gave up Champions for awhile because it seemed everyone wanted to run some clone/amalgam of Punisher, Ghost Rider and Wolverine, and I wasn't at all interested in running a Dark Champions or high-carnage kind of campaign.
I've seen more characters with AP or Penetrating claws than I've seen clones of any other single comic concept.
Next most common is probably Iron Man clones.
I had one player in our game group whose characters all seemed clones of each other. No matter what else his character did, all his characters flew, had at least 30 STR and had Damage Reduction. His super-patriot, his Manbat clone, his Cyclops clone and even his Green Arrow clone (Blue Bowman) were all immune to small arms fire, could bench-press a Toyota, and flew by on means or another.

I have a few "clones":
Iron-Man: Paladin
Nightcrawler: Black Demon
Cyclops: Starfire (solar eyebeams, complete with visor)
Capt America: Shieldsman
Moonknight and Daredevil I wrote up straight from the comics, picture and all.

I have an NPC (occasional PC) who, within the first minute I'd introduced him, caused my players to say "Oh, he's like Batman." Now they pester me to "do the voice" every time he shows up.
And I've got a back-up PC character, "Thorium", who has radiation powers and Thor's hammer (and glove and belt).
And I'm working on a create-energy-constructs GL-type right now.
No Superman, yet. And no gun bunnies. But I've had several friends who always made Wolverine wannabes -- that was in the late 80s, though. They may have grown out of that phase. Well, one of them may have.

I'm fixing to run a character that I'm sure the less astute members of my gaming group will assume is a clone of Green Lantern. He's more of a clone of the old Star Man though.:cool:

Iron Man. I've ran several clones of him in games and used clones as NPCs before. I'm a big fan of shell head.

I don't do clones...I do homages...yeah.
I tend to take part of a characters orignin, smack it into another and get a new hero.
Example: Characters wealthy family is brutally slain (like Batman). Only the killers are mystical. Characer appprentices himself to powerful wizard (like Doc Strange did) and becomes a mystically endowed killer of "evil" (like Wolverine).
Having said that, I got a Cap Clone, a guy calling himself Thor, and a spidey clone who was bit by a radioactive ant and became a secret service agent for JFK
Also have a superman clone, whose alien grandmother keeps showing up, asking for his help running her interstellar empire. Relatives.

Nope. In fact in my campaign I have BANNED all Wolverine clones. Otherwise that's all they would play.
I've never made any bones about my favorite PC/NPC being a rip off of the team leader from Alpha Flight: The classic flying Energy Projector with Flight, Energy Blast and Force Field in an Elemental Control.
Thing is, I first made Quasar SOOO long ago, I can't even remember that hero's name.:eek:
Was it Guardian?

I chose other. The most "cloned" character for me is Val Armorr - Karate Kid. A frontline dish out damage like the brick martial artist with virtually no stealth skills. I've done that with basic variations three times.
Iron Man - I've done a full blown classic supersuit twice.
I did a batman clone once, after seeing the first Burton movie and was enthused at the idea.

Irving might just be a Brother Power clone except that he's probably stronger and tougher than the Groovy Golem...

Nah, I've been in whole groups of Wolverines in the past with me as the only Cyclops, or Cap type ;)
It seems to have died down a bit since then though.

My votes were Captain America, Batman, Thor, Green Lantern, Spider-Man, and Other.
The 'others' are usually Colossus or The Thing (Bricks, with or without Hero ID/Multiform), or classical things like werewolves. Green Lantern (or his Marvel equivalent, Quasar) are my most frequent rips, as I love the versatility of solid-light constructs. :)

I have done clones of various ones and in the old campaign group we had a Torch clone, The Flame (my character), a Thor clone, The Voidwalker (more powerful than anyone else),
a Cap clone (the Avenger), a Wolverine rip off (Wolverine as a homicidal psycopath and if 10D6 HKA is not homicidal psycopathic I don't know what is), a Magneto rip off (The Magnetic Mistress), a Spiderman clone (Arachneida), a Dr Strange clone (the Magician another one of mine), a Dr Pym clone (Swiftshift) and a Green Lantern clone (the Demoness and her Cosmic Power Pool).
For the villains it is easier as well and I will continue to clone to my hearts content.

Hmm. Gotta go with Superman. I've got a guy patterned after his initial power set: Gallant and a cheesy ripoff named Ultra with all the cheese a Kryptonian EC, Multipower & VPP can muster.
Needless to say, Ultra doesn't get played no more. I even had different origins for him each time I tried to dust him off and run him around the block: mutant with the power to channel the biosphere for Superman-style power, partial clone of dead alien found in wrecked spacecraft, guy with alien bracers that empower him and finally, as a recent NPC in my game I ran for Champsguy as a a full-blooded Kryptonian who had come to Earth seeking vengeance against the other player's Daxxamite, Con-El. Sadly, they wound up allies after a nice big dustup between the PCs and my government sponsored Judgement League Avengers.
Natually, I'll clone a villain every chance I get. Do a pallet-swap, file off the serial numbers and send that slob onto the field. whee!

I've run a Captain America clone (The All-American Here), and a clone of the Iron Man villain The Ghost (The Spirit).
In a game I GM'd, we had a guy doing a Batman clone, but only with every-man stealth. Go figure.

We've got clones and homages in our campaign along with originals. Let's see, we have Beldandy from OMG; someone based on Batman, Sherlock Holmes and Disney's Darkwing Duck - yes, he's human and he's become an archtype in our campaign for detective heroes; someone based on SpiderWoman; a couple of them based on PowerMan (one's my villain); Kim Possible from Disney; the Sailor Scouts or Sailor Senshi as you prefer; homages to Storm; hmm - no Wolverine clones, that's fine with me and of course, original concepts. This is by no means a complete list. :)

Because Canada does all the work in house, with government scientists (their Manhattan project).
The US farms out all that research to private corporations, who then create people more loyal to the corp than to the USA. Could you imagine what Tony Stark could create for the Government if he actually worked for them instead of just being a contractor?

On topic, well, I've created clones of most of these, plus a few others.
Never a wolverine clone.

You might as well call me the Clone King. The NeoChampion Universe (my own twisted version of the Champion Universe) has so many "homages" and "one-offs" that it's not even funny.
For example, take a look at the roster of the Justice Battalion -- the superhero team based in Cincinnati in the campaign.
Justice Battalion Overview (http://theemerged.blogspot.com/JBOverView.htm)
Mega = Supergirl
Victory = Wonder Woman parody
Gargantujuan = lifted almost directly from The Crossovers
Power Twins = Wonder Twins mingled with Gamid & Gavin of Crux
Khan = Krypto (of Superman)
Swish = Flash
Hydroman = Aquaman mingled with Man O' War from Freedom Force
Shayara = Zatanna one-off
Hyperion = Captain Marvel/Superman one-off
Baethan Electrum = female with Booster Gold's original power set
Flying Squirrel = Batman parody/one-off
Goshawk -- Hawkman one-off
Rubbermaid -- Elongated man one-off (not powerful enough to be a Plastic-Man one-off)
And that's one of dozens of teams in the campaign world. The Moderators for example are primarily themed after X-mutants, the Capital Gang is themed on the Avengers...

Didn't he just get tapped to be Secretary of Defense in his own comic?
As to Canada, that explains a lot about Alpha Flight. A team that has acrobatic midgets and big hairy bricks considered equally viable as members. Also explains their worst enemy being bureaucrats.
and poor sales of course...

Wouldn't know. Haven't read a comic in about ten years, but it makes a lot of sense. SI used to be the premier weapons maker for SHIELD.

Yep. Government bureaucracy baby. EEOC (or the Canadian equivalent).
Amazing they lasted this long.

Kid Sampson (Wildcat from DC... y'know, boxer-cum-superhero)

I made Iron Man clones without end. I cloned Shell-head, Rhodey, most of his Rogues Gallary (my best-loved PC was a direct lift of Sunturion).
When I went through my "Angsty phase" (Pre-White Wolf). I cloned Elric of Melnibone as my "Eternal Champion".
Clones of NPCs and villains abound. The whole Weapon X program (Wolverine, Sabertooth, Maverick, Deadpool, etc...) have bounced around my campaigns (mainly because my little brother is a die-hard Deadpool fan). Aesir is a Thor Clone (acutally an amalgam of most of the well-known members of the Norse Pantheon; Odin, Thor, Tyr, Baldur, Heimdall, etc...) Triaxis is a villain based on Captain America (a superpatriot sworn to an extragalactic tyrant). Most of my speedsters owe most of their power set and SFX to the Flash. Lens is an alien lift off of Green Lantern (energy constructs through a unique focus).
And I seldom make Superman clones, instead I pull most of my details from Captain Marvel (Shazam!). However the characters are so close in SFX and abilities that they might as well be clones of each other.
My last character was a clone of Ultra-Boy from the Legion of Super Heroes. Who was ultimately inspired by Superboy's powers. Thus, an indirect clone of Superman.
Maybe that should be a new thread, "Six degrees of separation in the Comics world"

I've done some sort of clone of the majority of these, but to Hermit's reference of "over and over", no one type comes to mind. I try to keep a variety, and when I do clone I try to twist enough that it also ends up varying it. I'm not attracted to any of these types particularly as a PC.

i mostly play bricks--all of them different....
i've played:
a creeper/crazyman-type brick;
a thing-type brick;
a captain marvel (original)-type brick;
a luke cage-type brick;
a major force-type brick;
a captain britain (80's) type brick;
a thor-type brick;
a mighty mouse-type brick;
and currently a powerpuff-girl-type brick....
i've had other characters as well, it just seems i play bricks most often....

As a player, my own characters often look like the Batman type: short on raw power but very flexible and with a lot of tricks up their sleeves. Few or no metahuman abilities but lots of skills and gadgets.
As a GM, I often run into Ironman clones: munchkins just love OIFing everything. Back a few years ago I had a problem with almost everyone wanting to play a Walverine or Punisher rip-off. Most of those players have since then "devolved" back to Hack'n'Slash D&D. :eek:

I guess I'd be under the FF clones category, if any. I have done a couple Thing types, but this is forgivable since he is the best character out there. I also use the Torch as my prototype EBer, though I did attempt a Cyclops clone once. I also have the Ultra Boy inspired character running around now, and I'm working on a Doctor Octopus inspired hero.
Dock Ock as a hero is really tough, motivation wise. It's hard to rationalize building the arms intentionally when the world has perfectly good force field and telekinesis tech available. But I'm getting there. :)
