November on the Caspian

Got back on shift at the end of October, came down with a really bad cold, now in week #3 and it refuses to budge. I've been working on and off in Kazakhstan since 1996 and every 3 to 4 months I come down with a bad chest infection, clogged sinuses, swollen tonsils, headaches, bricelosis coughs, the whole shmear. I think I'm allergic to this country, or at least the western half.

I finally saw my 7 year olds first TV commercial appearance when I was at home in October. No closeups, she was splashing around in a pool with a pair of other kids. The advert was for some large housing complex being developed on the other side of Bangkok. Anyway, while home Amanda was selected for a program about the Loi Kratong festival, what you do, where teh roots lay, what it celebrates. Brilliant! Lots of closeups and she was stunningly pretty and not bad at that level of acting either.

Managed to get a game in with the Bangkok Farangs. Simple scenario, the 'Five Fingers of Justice' (Hey, it's a translation from Thai, work with it) which was us, vs the obviously Eeeeeevil General Prem who was planning to stage a coup against the King. Great fun. 4 expats, 5 Thai's, lot's of humour running a game in two languages. The running joke was "Uh-oh, now we're in trouble... Pob, best call your sister!". Pob being the 27 year old Phd candidate whose younger sister, at 25, already has 3 degrees plus a Phd in some bizarre medical field. She's working doctor/ intern/ whatever it is medical bods do somewhere in Germany and is studying for another degree... Pob is apparently the family idiot. Anyway, the 'Five Fingers of Justice' triumphed and the Eeeeevil General Prem was killed trying to escape justice. Thai's don't believe in 'Codes against killing' you see...

My 6mm Napoleonics are coming along nicely, hope to get my Austerlitz recreation ready for July and the Singapore gaming con. This last financial crash really blew my timetable to shreds, I'm 2 years late but am optimistic.
