Hard Drive Woes

Rate this Entry
So I'm tragically out of hard drive space. I've got to 30GB drives that I've been running forever. I've probably got a total of 6GB free.

So I moved my paging file to my secondary, moved my MP3s to the primary, uninstalled all that extra crap and freed up another GB or so.

I was looking into getting a new 120GB drive, but money is pretty tight. Then one of my players offered up a 'spare' 120GB drive. SPARE!?! SWEEEET! So then I figured I would just hop into Partition Magic and copy my old secondary to the new 120GB secondary. But apparently there are some errors and PQMagic won't copy it. So now I'm trying to delete as much stuff as a I can to hopefully zip it down far enough to cram it on a DVD or two.

Good heavens is it slow. A 1.2 GHz processor just doesn't seem to have the stones to keep up. I'm still at it, and expect to be at it for a few more hours yet.

Wish me luck!

I'm still limping along on an overclocked 1 GHz Pentium III. OTOH, I was able to upgrade to a 250 GB hard drive when I reinstalled Windows (and upgraded from '98 to XP) back in March). I still have a lot of stuff on the old drive I need to recover.

This system is fast approaching 8 years old; I built in in January 2000. It's on its second video card, third monitor, and third printer.

Yeah, mine is about that old as well. I've replaced monitors a couple of times but mostly upgrading to a larger size from cast offs. I went from a 17" to 19" Flat Panel (that I didn't like) to a 19" Flat Screen to a 21" Flat Screen (WOOHOO!). I've had the same printer since 1997, of course, it's an HP LJ 4000. It's a workgroup printer so has PLENTY of life left in the old girl.

Other than a power supply that I had to replace (the deadbeat-ex was installing a ceiling fan WITHOUT shutting off the power and fried all the electronics in the house) and a fan or two I've had no other problems. Hey, I build them to last!

I should say that on the positive side, I competed all the work Saturday night. I pulled all the drives out and set them on a little table. Then I plugged in the new drive (removing the old), move stuff from the primary to the new drive, shut down, unplug new, plug in old, reboot, move stuff from old secondary to primary, shut down, unplug old, plug in new....etc.

It took about 3 swaps to get everything copied over in about 6GB batches. It took about 2 hours to get it all done. It was copying 6 GB in about 20 minutes, which isn't too bad.

Maybe it's just me, but the PC seems to be running a booting a bit faster. Gary noticed it too. SWEEEET!

Yeah, I got a 21" widescreen back in March and by this point can't imagine how I ever survived using "only" a 19".

My next system will probably be a laptop since I mostly need the mobility. Hopefully that will come about in a few more months. This current system is fine for web browsing and e-mail and a bit of word processing; which is pretty much all I do on a PC these days (I used to game a lot, but I've just about stopped gaming and the only game I really want to play on the new system is Civilization 4.) I may convert it to a Linux box once I get the laptop; the only reason I haven't yet is Linux can't seem to sync my PDA.
