MapTool the new gaming table

This would be my first blog to the Hero Blogs, and I've decided that I'm going to keep things very gaming centric. I already have a LiveJournal blog and will likely use that more than this one, but gaming related stuff I'll probably cross post here.
So in recent months I have been getting into Virtual Table Top software and gaming. I am currently playing in an ORPG and a MapTool game. Both are Hero system, with the exception of an additional MapTool game that uses the Savage Worlds rules which I have to admit I'm growing very fond of, but that is for another blog.
Anyway, I took several weeks to research all the various VTTs out there and it came down to Battlegrounds, MapTool and OpenRPG. After several demos and personal testing I was still really torn. Then I was lucky enough to join a game using ORPG, and was impressed with its Hero System integration, but not so impressed by its graphical stuff. Then I tried MapTool, wow, that is one beaut of a VTT. The downside though is that it doesn't have the Hero System integration. Then Battlegrounds, also really nice, but it is way too expensive especially when you compare it to MapTool and see that MapTool has the same graphical abilities but its free! So now I'm back to comparing ORPG and MT. Well I finally got to play a Hero System game on MT, and was surprised that despite its lack of Hero System integration it was still quite easy to use and play on, and since it uses an easy macro language I was able to build custom die roll mechanics in no time flat (although they could be made better).
I have to say that I'm very smitten by MT, and I'll likely be using it as my VTT of choice for quite a while.
