"I guess I'm destined to bury a whole lotta folks I ain't never even met."
— Docc Digger, on finding a leg bone sticking out of the ground on the way to Hillside.
The group heads north. (Chester decides to go with them.) With no road going in the direction of their destination, they decide to head straight north toward Hillside. This allows them to put off traveling in the mountains for a long time and carries them through the periphery of Cyclone territory, instead of right through it. (The Cyclones are a dangerous cycle gang with a nasty reputation.)
With relatively flat and open terrain ahead of them, the group makes good, and uneventful, progress the first day. When night comes, there's a blue moon... literally, not figuratively. No one is sure what to make of it. On Docc's watch he catches sight of a small object very far away passing in front of it. He passes the information along, but no one's ever seen anything like that either.
On the second day they discover a wrecked cycle. Jimmy and Chester walk up with caution and look around. Apparently the cycle was on the losing end of a battle with a four-wheeled vehicle. Docc spends some time scavenging the parts, but they site is creepy, and potentially on a route that the Cyclones patrol, so they leave as soon as they can. Later in the day the rain starts to fall, and it keeps getting worse. The party sees a huge electrical storm coming toward them, and they decide to try and outrun it. They jog for hours, forcing the donkey to do the same. Luckily the storm crosses to the south of them. They take turns sleeping in the cart that night.
After a night of rain, the next day turns into a slog over muddy ground. They stumble through the mess for hours. Eventually they hear something in the distance that sounds like a child crying. They find the source of the noise in the form of a small girl. Emily claims that her family was on it's way south when they were caught in the electrical storm. Docc looks around with the binoculars, but only makes out a small crumpled form. Jimmy goes out to investigate and finds a bag... apparently a woman's piece of luggage. Emily can't remember anything beyond them getting caught in the storm. She has no idea where her folks are now, or why, exactly, they were headed south in the first place. Curiously Dave cannot contact her with his telepathy. With no other realistic options, the group decides to take Emily with them.
The next day the group arrives in Hillside. The children in town seem to know Emily and the adults remember her parents coming through a few days earlier. With the first leg of their journey complete, the group decides to provision and consider their next course of action.
At this point we called the session due to GM illness.
