OK...so I've been playing Hero for over 20 years now (gulp!), and I just recently picked up FREd and began converting the campaign world I've been working on in for the last 5 years while I lived in the mountains with no gamers nearby. Now that I actually have access to players, I'm finding some of the changes a bit boggling. Specificaly, I'm trying to wrap my brain around the modifications to package deals, as in the new Fantasy ero, there seems to be more of an emphasis on them, with less of a point break, and higher power levels to boot. As my setting was designed to rely on packages rather heavily, its throwing a wrench into my conversion work... I'm having to rethink…

Which is better? The Monsters and Minions book, priced at 26.99 for 128 pages, or the Hero Beastiary at 24.99 and 240 pages? What is the Beastiary missing that the M book provides? And of course, vise versa?

I am working on my fantasy world and have run into a few quandries. First some background: I have a huge world. I will have somewhere in the neighborhood of 90 different countries when I am finished. I am writing up everything in a format similar to what most gaming companies do: Main world book, supplements for specifics (such as Vampires, Lycanthropes, Fae, etc.). I would like other's opinions on these: 1) I have a race of Dark Elves on my world (who doesn't?) called the Morla. Now, I want them to be evil, nasty, and altogether known as the "bad guys." I really didn't want them to be a culture that players chose their characters from. Would y…

I've been asked about two abilities and how Hero might handled them. The first is a Paladin's Lay on Hands. Its a healing pool that a character has a certain amount of points in. However, he spends those points exactly how he wants (ie. he can spend 1 point each on a bunch of dying peasants to save them, or spend all 30 points in the pool to heal a wounded companion). I realize this sort of approaches the idea of an 'absolute' effect, but I was curious if there was anyway to give a player that sort of total control? A mana system based around the character's mental ability. Spell effects typically cost END. Is there a way to create the equivalent of "End" (…

I am currently running a Modern Magic game and I am trying to design some designed around guns. I need a spell for creating (transform or summon...not sure which works best for this) a gun, a spell for enchanting (extra damage, or maybe varible power effects) a gun/ammo. I have some ideas how to set them up, but they are costing more than the 40 active point cap limit I have set for the character. The summon spell w/slavishly loyal is one way I was working on the create gun spell. Any ideas?

I was trying to put a list together with the ***bulk*** of Knowledge skills already worked out so that players could see what was fitting. I got a bunch done but then decided that maybe others could give me a hand out and review the list for what I am sure is many many ommissions. ***[permission] = GM approval. Not many Fantasy Hero Characters will know a whole lot about the world in total and the way it functions. The World & Geographical KS: The World [permission] KS: Uropia - the continent KS: Region [Western States, Middle Kingdoms, Southern Islands, Northlands, Fallen Kingdoms, The East] KS: Country [Clairvaux, Eadon, Erenn, Khaylish, Lorain, Mi…

Well, having set up the ground rules well enough for a one-on-one game (ie. very vaguely indeed) on this thread, I've started my Final Fantasy 7 based pbem game. On the same thread, you can find the write up of the lead (and only) PC. The basic idea is a game that starts at the same point as the FF7 computer game. However, the universe isn't quite the same... Cloud is no where to be seen, and now that things have reached this points things will be diverging from the FF7 plot line rapidly. The player is aware that there are differences between the universes, but will have to find out what they are the hard way . The main ones he knew in advance are that materia work s…

Hello guys I have been working on a rough outline of a new magic system. I have yet to refine it or cleen it up but would still like to get some opinions from others. So here goes. (I did not take time to format it for the boards yet but will try to later. Still a lot choppy) Magic From The World of Core “Hi I’m Loar, I’ll be your guide during your first few weeks here at Adinari. Well I guess the best place to start would be for me to show you to the mess and the bathrooms.†“A what?†you ask. “You’ve never heard of a bathroom? Well let me explain here at the tower we have many amenities you have probably never heard of, from …

Lands of Mystery was a supplement for Justice Inc published back in the 80s. It was written by Aaron Allston. It deals with the "Lost World" type of adventures written by people like Edgar Rice Burroughs. Once again I've remembered that these are fantasy stories. The only thing that makes "Lost World" stories "pulp" is that they often include protagonists from Earth. Otherwise they are about swords, monsters, princesses, strange nonhumans, strange places (including huge underground labyrinths!) and all the juicy fantasy goodness you could want. For what it's worth, the original edition of DnD contained a fair bit of material derived from Burroughs, while TS…

I am trying to help a player in my group reconfigure his gadget pool in a steampunk fantasy setting. He is going for aquatic adventuring! So we are building a bulky aquanaut suit for him. We have flippers with a backpack steam screw that gives some extra swimming. We have some incidental advantages such as flash defense for flash attacks not directly in front (but also he has a limited view). Its a 75 point pool with 29 points spent. Just need a few more ideas. Being the GM I know what is ahead and am hesitant to suggest anything too useful! So far this has been the most fun configuration to think about. I don't need writeups as much as ideas for things t…

Why do you GM???

Why do YOU do it Story tell / DM / GM / Referee??? Is it cos you are a power hungry uber freak with real world confidence and self worth issues? Is it cos you suck as a player Is it cos no one else will??? Or maybe its cos you enjoy giving people a good time ..and legally!!?? For me its cos i suck as a player and I like to be in control - a benevolent dictator if you will...

Hello, One of the players in a game i'm running has a familiar, the player already has a mindlink with it, and the ability to use clairsenteince to "see through its eyes". He wants the ability to cast spells from the vantage point of the familliar, regardless of where he is. How would any of you guys model that??

GM's Again - Player Feedback
by Guest taxboy4- 6 replies

Recently I had a mass flaming on our game's Board Thread with the players very unhappy with how the game was going. After I stopped being pissed off, I actually listened to the comments, and changed my game for the better. How do other DM's deal with feedback, positive or negative. Who has had some shockers? I must admit its a great ego boost when you've had a great game!

Ok, I created my major Villain (not really) today and I really don't know if everything is right, basicly he is the soul of a General trapped in an magical armor. I created the armor as power... well first try. Could someone please tell me if the weapon is made right, it's a basic greatsword without "real weapon" the costs schould be right. Ok, free for discussion, if somebody knows how to create such a mystical tragic knight better... please tell me (especialy the armor things puzzles me, don't know but somehow he should get doesn't bleed or something like this but on the other side... if someone cuts his armor a flame made of blue light erupts. Oh and the thing …

Killing Characters / Combat Realism

Kia ora from New Zealand Two topics for the price of one GM's out there, under what circumstances do you kill a PC? I tend to be quite soft and they really have to do it to themselves AND the story / logic call for it - no radom combat death's in my game - least not for the PC's. 2nd - How graphic are you in description of the combat - Fantasy Hero has an awesome location system -e.g. on Thursday I described who a brigand was disembowelled by a sword blow and a 2nd later his offsider lost a hand (with a spray of blood) to a clothyard shaft (ohh errr). So let me have your thoughts Cheers Baz

How do you design a sleep spell using the Hero system? I understand Hero enough to do the more obvious effects, but its the more subtle effects that confuse me. Things like sleep, or just warming up a small area like a campfire effect, things like that. Sometimes, because of the variety of options available, I just get confused and that's why I come here, to get help. And I know that someone...**killer shrike**....will be able to help.

i was wondering about the 9 Nazgul. I was wondering what were their names or background. The only one I know much about is the Witch-King. I was wondering if any of the diehard Lord of the Ring fans knew anything about them (or steer me in the right direction)? Thanks for any help.

Ok, first things first... Hello everyone! (first post ) Tonight I've done it, bought HERO 5th and Fantasy HERO at the onlinestore of my choice and now my mind is working. I've read a lot about the HERO system in the last weeks, months.. whatever... and the system look's like you could realy build anything with it. I tried to make a conversion of two Fantasy Worlds in nearly every "multigenre" (or how do you call it) game I own, everything failed... looking at all the HERO stuff out in the net HERO should be able to do it... the two Worlds I'm talking about are Earthdawn (I love the setting but never played the game, I dislike the rules... the reason for this …

Not sure if this belongs here, or in Star Hero, or in Other Genres... Anyway, some of my players had a real problem with the Pulp Hero game I was running. ("Too much real world stuff!" "I don't feel like my character's threatened." Pah. Wimps.) So, for the next campaign, we bandied about a number of concepts. We ended up with Fantasy/Crossworlds/Martial Arts/Action at the high-powered Heroic end (125+125). After condensing all of this (a task involving no small amount of cerebral massage) I came up with "Kumite Hero" with a strong Fantasy edge. As a GM, I paid attention during the character concept stage of character creation, writing down all the ideas for late…
