Hey all. I am using a Mana system for my magic. Basically, it's the one discussed in FH (Mana is just like END only it's EGO/3 and recovers slower). However, I'm having a hard time calculating the mana cost per spell/power. For example, I have Mage Armor which has an active cost of 12, real cost of 4. What should the mana cost be? In a related issue, does anyone know how to make the spell only useable on the caster himself and program this in Hero Designer? Do I need to make a custom modifier? Thanks.

The HERO Stystem was designed, first and foremost, as a game that would support roleplaying in the comic book "Super" genre. Given this, it is quite right and proper to have characters be able to lift cars, tanks and other very heavy objects. For a grittier, more real world feel, though, I find that having a character's lifting ability progress geometrically in relation to the linear increase in his STR stat to be troublesome. Under standard Hero rules, for example, a character with 20 STR can, with a full push, pick up a Honda Civic and -throw it- a short distance! In order to rectify this, I have altered the lift table to progress linearly in relation …

I'm running a FH game where I have a player who is a dwarf fighter who wears a full suit of Banded Mail (6 DEF) and who has 1 Level of Combat Luck which gives him an additional 3 DEF which is Hardened. Does this seem balanced? He has been hard to hurt in combat unless I roll really high on the damage dice and a good hit location like Stomach or Vitals. I'm planning on making a House Rule of no more than 1 Level of Combat Luck as long as the total DEF in addition to Armor worn doesn't exceed 9 DEF. So a character who doesn't wear armor could have 3 Levels of Combat Luck. But what is to logically stop such a character from putting on armor after he buys 3 Levels of…

I'm working on a adventure that has several different undead being run by a Necromancer. The most powerful undead are mummies who are decked out with full armor (why, because the undead never get tired wearing it, haha). To offset this I had come up with a set of embalmer's daggers that had penetration so the none uber-fighter types could have a attack that would get some damage by the armor. The problem I suddenly discovered was when I prepared the final battle phase when they face the Necormancer, and relized that I had designed him with Forcewalls as his major defense. Forcewalls that can be taken down now in one shot by the Embalmer daggers with penetration. I r…

Hey everyone, Cross posting in the Champions and Star Hero forums. I'm almost done with a New and Very Very Very Improved Hero Helper For those who don't know, it's a program to help GM's during gaming sessions, like roll dice quickly etc. The graphics are more appealing and I've included an on-line help. Besides that, here is what I've done so far and things that are in the planning. Comments are welcomed. What's Improved Dice Roller Now it will roll the Killing damage for Killing Attacks. I've also improved the interface so that you can have unlimited number of Pre-Roll settings and setting up those Pre-Rolls much easier. Explosio…

I put up a web-based tool for making an HDT file for Hero Designer v2 yesterday here: http://www.killershrike.com/FantasyHERO/GreyHEROContent/RacePackageDeals/NCMExport/NCMExport.asp The files it creates are intended to be used as a starting point for using the new functionality in HDv2 to open a Character on a custom Template, add powers, perks, skills, etc to that Character, and then "Save as Template" to create an improved Template that is kind of a Template and Prefab all rolled up into 1 file.

I recently picked up the new Complete Warrior splatbook for D&D and, while it;'s unleikly I will ever use it to play D&D, it did give me some general fantasy ideas for character arechetypes. I don't know if I liked their take on the Samurai (removing samurai from their cultural context is an iffy proposition IMHO), but the hexblade is an especially intribuging character concept. And face it -- doesn't Hexblade sound like an anime title to you? It does to me! I got this idea for a series that centers around a Hexblade who find that in his quest for wealth and power he finds himself quite unintentionally assembling a cadre of friends and changing the world -- f…

All this talk about swords has had me wondering what it must be like on the Elemental Plane of Sharpness. This would be a very hard plane for humans to survive in, as the very air cuts like, well, something very sharp. the ground cuts like something very sharp to. fact is, everything cuts. Still, you could summon things from the elemental plane of Sharpness that are, well, sharp. Sharp enough to be extremely effective weapons if handled very, very carefully. beings from that plane would be Sharpness elementals. Their touch is a potent HKA, Always On. Everything they come into contact with is cut. they can slice through armor like it was paper, and the only thing…

Would you allow this power in your Fantasy Hero game? Say a Thief / Assassin that has a 60 point psionic multi-power and a 100 end reserve to power it. His swordsmanship and bow skills or not amazing but above average. So would you allow this power as a multi-power slot…… Physic Venom 1D6+1 RKA +1 NND +1 Does Body -1/2 requires bladed weapon of opportunity -1/2 Weapon must do body damage With this build he could charge a sword and hit some one with it; or dagger and throw it; or an arrow and shoot some one. To powerful or just cool and in character? Thanks Demonsong

I what reading the Thread on RuneLord... and this idea came to me...I don't know if it's what the RuneLord thread was saying but here it is just the same. Could you... strike that... how would you construct an object to give a person that knows how to use the object a powerpool that would fade over time that would be used to cast different forms of magic. (kind of like a power talisman.) What would be a good way to make this item? The idea is still only in its fledgling stage but here is what I thought it might be like... PLEASE post any variants on this idea as well. -Only one could be used at a given time. -Some Objects could be used to boost d…

I was reading a review of a WuXia (Chinese Swordfighting) based RPG recently which used a setting that the reviewer (being familiar with the real thing) pointed out was in fact just a real period of Chinese history with a few name changes in important figures. And, the reviewer asked, quite reasonably, why bother to change them at all? Which got me thinking (and I'm not just talking about Chinese-themed campaigns)...Which is better? To set campaigns in "real history"? To set them in "unreal history"? (real history with small modifications, like the presence of magic...) Or to set them in completely fictional fantasy worlds? I used to be oriented 100% toward…

Something that has come up in doing various monster/race conversions is the issue of PRE. More specifically, what is the best way to buy PRE to simulate characters/creatures who are particularly large and or frightening. It seems from Steve's official write-ups and other people's on these boards that straight-up PRE is the generally preferred way. However, I was concerned that buying 'straight-up' PRE (i.e., as a Characteristic) for them would make Big Ugly Things have better PRE-Based Skill Rolls which really didn't seem fair. Of the PRE-based Skills -- Acting, Animal Handler, Bureaucratics, Conversation, High Society, Interrogation, Persuasion, Sed…

Okay... see, there's this alternate dimension, an elemental plane where wizards, mages and other beings can store documents, spell scrolls, drawings, hypotheses (sp?) and any odd data they want to save. Other wizards can access the information via special Contact Other Plane spells, or simply connect to it quickly with a KS: Cipherspace roll. It's the magical equivalent of Cyberspace, inhabited by the ghosts of old studious wizards turned to lore-ravenous Revenants, Info-mentals, Brain-hacking Cipherghouls and young idealistic mages called cipherpunks who want to plant Delayed Effect thaumic viruses in spells to burn out rival wizard's minds. Extradimen…

I've toyed with the idea of divorcing a character's running speed from his speed stat. A character's initial running stat would be 12"/Turn, and buying it up would cost 1 point per 1" per turn. How far the character moves in a given phase then becomes his inches per turn divided by his spd stat. I would also put an absolue limit of 1.5x normal maxima on buying past the normal maxima (ie, normal = 20, limit = 30) Theory being that, if a player wants his character to be fleet of foot, he should be buying running, not speed. Also, haivng the two tied together allows for characters to easily outpace world class sprinters. Normally : Speed 4, 10" running (norm…

More flavor rules for the forum's consideration Musclebound : The musclebound character's physique is more developed than his frame can realistically support, resulting in greatly reduced flexibility and an undue load on his cardio-pulmonary system. While it makes the character stronger, the added strength is of limited utility. Game effects (2 levels maximum) : +5 STR useable only to lifts, grab/hold, shove (offense & defence), counter encumberance, or crush. (no secondary stats) -1 OCV in melee -+20 Kg to Character Mass, carried as encumberance Obese : The obese character's physique includes a lot of extra fat, resulting in…

For those of you who have set up prices for a fantasy world or thought much about it, I had a few issues: 1. It seems the basis should be as FH has it, setting a rate for manual/unskilled labor rates for a day's work, and then pricing everything else accordingly, i.e., basic food/drink/lodging/clothing must be affordable for that rate (lodging may be tight with family/roommates, and food may be pretty basic, but more than mere bread and water, and occasional extras like clothes (or at least materials to make them), containers for water/food/etc., and minor other objects need to be available). It seems that prices for adventures for these things would generally be h…

As with Lifting, I was unhappy with the way size changes worked for a heroic, as opposed to super heroic, campaign. I was especially unhappy with the rather abrupt nature of shrinking. One could be normal mass, or 1/8th in a single jump. Not much middle ground for the little folk to live in. As a result, I formulated the following house rules.... Fantastic Growth : It seems to me that being many times more massive than your foe should do more on the positive side than add a bit of Body, Stun and DCs. So I thought about it and concluded that Fantasy Growth should work as per normal growth, except : 1) In keeping with my linear lift rules, it does not …

When assessing END Cost for using weapons in melee, do you take into account the weapon's STR Min in addition to any extra STR used to increase damage? Or only just the extra STR used for extra damage? Also, is there an END cost for using a Crossbow? It doesn't make sense to spend END firing the crossbow, but maybe for reloading it, since you are exerting STR recocking the bow string?
