The Bonnacon: Source: The Fantasy Gamer’s Compendium by Phil Edgren1983 game science: Mythos: Medieval Mythology Description: An animal like a large ox, but with horns so curved in upon themselves that they are harmless. The Bonnacon is easily frightened, and when it runs away it emits a cloud of noxious gas, which ignites all flammable substances within hundreds of feet and causes men and beast to fall retching to the ground. Bonnacons can be found singly or in small groups in open grasslands. (Note I had to tone down the power of the “Noxious gas†but the concept of the beast is still intact.) Bonnacon (The Fart Monster) 100 points Strength: 25 (W…

Stat Inflation 1 2 3

Hello all. I am running a Fantasy Campaign with the characters purchased on 75+75 points. I have 3-5 players depending upon what all is going on. My problem is that I am running into stat inflation where everyone wants a 20 STR. Now, I admit that the party is fighter heavy (I don't have a problem with this part). However, I have the brick of the group that has a 20 STR, the quick agile fighter has a 20 STR, and now I am going to have another player with a 20 STR. I HATE arbitrary limits so I don't want to just say, no you can't have a 20 STR. So what are some other ways to prevent this from happening in the future.

Okay. So I am gming FH in a campaign where the PCs are 75+75. I need two quick NPCs that are equivalent in power to the PCs. So, I don't want to take time out in the middle of the game to create two 150 point characters. How do you handle this situation.

Hello everyone, This will be my first post to these boards so I will give a little background. I am a hardcore Hackmaster player, but that doesn't mean I don't play or have intrest in other games. Sitting on my shelf next to my Hackmaster books are my Ars Magica, L5R (old school), 7th Sea, and Riddle of Steel books. Of course my 1st edition AD&D books have a place of honor along with my collection of Dark Sun material. I read about Hero Fantasy at RPG.net, but I thought I would come right to the soure and get your opinion here. Is Hero the right system for me? I have never played any of the previous editions, about the closest thing I have played is GUR…

I am thinking about how I want to do religion and priests in my next campaign. I don't want the gods to jump at the mortals bidding (aka, casting spells), I want there to be reason for doubt as to whether the gods even exist and whether they respond to a prayer, and I want obvious miracles to be rare and powerful -- no limits on Active Points or effects. I tried doing an uncontrolled cosmic VPP in a previous game, but it was a royal pain to GM because it created a lot of extra work, when I even remembered to use it. I'd like to let the player trigger it, without knowing what he's going to get, and without me having to compute a power on the fly, and without having a…

Cross posted from my Supers with Pictures thread, a superheroic level Hobgoblin. He should be a significant challenge for a full team of adventurers built on 200 points or under, but is probably less dangerous to such a group than he would be to a team of Standard Superheroes. HDC file is available in the Supers with Pictures thread.

Slayers is an example of an almost-all-humans fantasy world. For example, there used to be evles but nobody's seen one in centuries. But there are a few racial templates from that world that I am curiosu to see. note that like everything else in that ultra-powerful series they would be very expensive. Chimera: Although chimeras can be anything, I'm looking for an example of those abailites of Zlegad Greywards that could be desribed as "racial" Zelgadis is a chiera of three diifferent species: human, rock golem, and "brass demon". His skin has the consistency of stone, id hard when struck, and is impervious to nromal weapons such as swords and arrows. Zelgadis on…

While running my Turakian Age campaign (which is my first FH GMing for a LONG time), I realised that our party was a right mishmash of oddities, so I thought I would list them, and as well as inviting comments, see if other people have a party quite as 'out there' as this one... I will start with the most 'normal' characters: 1. Restless Elven Noblewoman (from Elvenholme) out to build a reputation and score points off a rival [note: one cliché is avoided here - the player is female]. Has a rather spiffy brigandine corselet (7pt) and a magic longbow with no range mods. Can also cast a 10D6 EB thunderbolt spell or a wall of fog (when she can make the casting roll…

Okay I am thinking 1d6 RKA, 10 STR min, no range mod. Does that sound about right? I don't normaly bother to write up weapons but this is for a game someone else is running and it is not in the book. The weapon write ups in FH are a pet peeve of mine. I just do not agree with alot of the listed damages and modifiers.

Character Sheet Layout
by Guest taxboy4- 5 replies

A different approach? A guy in my group is a whiz with numbers and detail - he has put together a very good character sheet. Now I liked his sheet but had one major thought - as we are playing RP game - shouldn't all the game world boxes be first and be on the first page.. i.e. a physical discription, his foibles, a physical discription of his skills, then his numbers following - what do people think.. ..I mean I even toy with the fact after PC has generated pc he only has in game info...none of the numbers? Thoughts?

Since I've seen characters from other RPGs converted to Hero on this board before, I thought this fellow might be fun to try. He's from the old and long out of print Runequest supplement "Griffin Mountain", with the creative work done by Rudy Kraft, Paul Jaquays & Greg Stafford. Just posted this to rpg.net; will take a few days to post, but here it is for fellow forumites: NOTE: this is a comped review. I rated the book 3 for Style, 4 for Substance. The Valdorian Age Purpose This book is intended to provide a Fantasy setting to run games with using the HERO System. What this book isn't: Not a Rulebook Not a How-to for Character design Not a RPG supplement masquerading as an art book with glossy color maps or inserts, suitable for filling out barren Coffee Tables. What this book is: A lower-magic, grittier Fantasy Genre Setting. Evocative of "Swords & Sorcery" style pulp …

I keep going back to some of the examples of fantasy I've been watching lately and wondering how to do a fantasy game in which the characters start at a very high level -- possibly even Superheroic. But I'm wondering whether the heroic standards of fantasy break down at that kind of point level. A 350-point sorcerer, for example, would have access to a wide variety of powerful spells. The thing, of course, is that they will be facing superheroic-level challenges as well. A 350-point warrior might mow down orcs by teh hundreds, but fi he has to take on a mid-level Demon Prince he's certain to be tested. I imagine that once a D&D campaign gets to about 12th le…

Hey there, I was just putting together a Wizard NPC and I thought of something that, with further thought, made for an interesting question to put to the boards or to the very hights of Mt Heropolis itself. What would the implications be for having a PS in 'component making'? Would that decrease any penalties for 'Difficult to Obtain' so that it's only material-biased? Sure you might need some finely crafted crystal, but as long as you bought the crystal you could 'finely craft' it yourself... or does this commom limitation assume that the Wizard makes his own components? Surely I can't be the first one to think of this, so if this is a repeat then I'll s…

Has anyone toyed with the idea of pre-writing PC 'birth conditions' for new characters? More specifically: Argument: I believe that there should be an element of tragedy to every superhero (I think Green Goblin said that in Spider-Man, but I can't be sure...) HOWEVER I don't think I can take each fantasy PC having a murdered father/family in their background anymore. Just once, in my 25+ years of RPGing, I would like to be approached with a PC concept that had nothing to do with family-tied-vengance or family-tied-disgrace. Proposed Solution: I may be a control-freak, but people are born out of circumstances beyond thier control. I was thinking of starting …

hy I was building a magical power to be impervious to magical effects. I mean being totally immune to magical effects. I've come up with this write-up: Desolidification (affected by magic) (40 AP); Only to protect against magical effects (-1) Cannot pass trough solid objects (-1/2) Restrainable (-1/2) concentration (1/2 DCV, -1/4) Gestures (-1/4) 2 continuing charges (20 minutes) (-1/4). RP 11 The special effect is a magical tattoo on the chest that has to be touched to be activated and when activated makes the bearer impervious to magic. Magical effects react like the tattoed man was not there at all so magical alarms would not detect him exactly like a f…

That question just popped up in my mind, and I ran to my HERO book to find out the answer (awakening everybody in the house, but I'm getting off-topic on my own topic). And it wasn't there : probably one of those Up To The Game Master thingies (UTTGM), I figured. So : considering that corrrectly wielding a weapon requires a skill (WF, to name it), would you consider that wearing armor need a skill ? If so, what kind of penalties (DEX, OCV, you name 'em) would occur ? And how about shields ?

How would you build Aahz? I can build a scaly green demon easily enough. What I'm curious about is building someone who knows lots of spells, and can't cast them but can teach them. Any ideas?
