In way of explanation: "Postblogging" is something that boring historians (guilty!) do on the Interwebs. Take you through the press, or selection of the press, during a Very Important Period of Our Past. Usually, we have a secret agenda. In this case, explaining how the Western Allies went from being willing to fold like a cheap thing that folds at Munich to being ready to have at 'em in September of 1939. As a historian of technology with an interest in economics, I thought that I had an explanation. All of the money invested in British aeroplanes over the last five years was coming due in the form of a flood of new technology. We tend to forget just how overwhelming it …

I just thought that I would start a new thread to ask other fans of the Pulp genre what "pulp" or pulp style books they have been reading recently. Recently I have discovered a series of books featuring a two fisted American hero named "Hardluck" Hannigan , written by Bill Craig. The first book in the series is "Emerald Death" and already (i've read the first eighty or so pages ) we have an American adventurer in Africa in the 30's involved with a beautiful aviatrix, her adopted father (who apparently studied in Tibet alongside one "Kent Allard"), nazis with a giant airship (with its own squadron of fighters on board),and a race to find an emerald with mystical proper…

Was thinking of getting motivated to run a Pulp campaign and was wondering what good Pulp films are out there to watch. This is what I've come up with so far: 1. Raiders of the Lost Ark 2. Temple of Doom 3. The Last Crusade 4. King Kong (2005) 5. The Mummy (1999) 6. The Mummy Returns (2001) I left kingdom of the Crystal Skull out intentionally since it takes place in the 50's but it still might fit because of the story. I know there are more Pulp films out there. I googled pulp movies but the only thing that comes up is Quentin Tarentino's very unpulp movie.

Reading some of Christopher Lees Obituaries after yesterday I find myself thinking about real people who would make for interesting pulp heroes. In lee's case RAF intelligence officer seconded to the SAS (possibly one of the inspirations for James bond) , expert fencer, multilingual, professional actor and Stuntman direct descendant of Charlemagne. Also Buster Keaton Physical Phenomenon pioneering stunt man jackie chan before there was a jackie chan Parkourist before parkour watch this video and tell me he wouldn't be an amazing pulp hero so who else would you suggest

In the Expanded Raider-verse, what level of paranormal anything can be reached before it becomes Call of Cthulhu? Relics/artifacts work - a given. Fetish Magic - see the voodoo doll in the novelization of Temple of Doom. Potent Mesmerism - see the voodoo prince in the novelization of Temple of Doom. Classic Wicca - the original novel Indiana Jones and the White Witch ESP - see Colonel Doctor Irina Spalko in the novelization of Crystal Skull.

This probably belongs in NGD, but it's fun and pulpy. Yesterday, I won in a citywide impromptu speaking contest at Toastmasters. We started with nineteen contestants, then voted for the best seven, then three, then one. My first round question was: "You have just been appointed to the mayor's council on transportation. What changes do you suggest?" I immediately answered: "Zeppelins!" Then I went into all the reasons that zeppelins are totally awesome, and how it could be made even more fun by dropping passengers off with a series of bungee cords and sliding boards. I was almost unanimously voted to advance to the next round with that one.

While the overview of the world in Pulp Hero was extensive, it obviously had some unavoidable holes in it. (Such as nothing about the USA between Chicago and California.) So, tell us a little bit about your hometown as it was in the 1920s and '30s. To lead off...Sandstone, Minnesota is approximately halfway between St. Paul and Duluth. If you look at a map of the eastern border of Minnesota and imagine it as a face in profile, Sandstone's on the bridge of the nose. The primary employer in the time period is the quarry which gives Sandstone its name. In the 1920s, Minnesota sandstone is used in important buildings throughout the US, and the town is booming. …

As mentioned in the Tremors IV: Thread, anything can be made pulp by simply changing the setting and making some tweaks! So I invite... nay, I DARE you to do so here. I'll start off... Predator: A group of experienced adventurers are sent deep into the jungle to find the remains of a previous expodition, only to be stalked by a hideous beast that can blend in with the surroundings. (Okay, that was an easy one, I'll try to think of something harder)

The Wild Wild West TV series is being repeated on the CBS Action channel in the UK. Now I never saw this at all growing up (3 TV channels until the start of the 1980s then a fourth and fifth followed by the satellite ones), so I had no reference at all for it until the Will Smith and Kevin Kline disaster of a film. The TV series on the other hand is really quite a joy and perfect for Pulp. Granted there are no aircraft but you have virtually everything else and it strikes me as a goldmine for taking ideas. Dr Loveless is a great recurring villain and his escapes fit the mood. One of the episodes just aired had a prototype tank, forty years before they were first empl…

So I was thinking the create a villain team thread in Champions does well. And pulp villians tend to be over the top sotheortically the same thread should work here. so... The Society of Set 5 members Darrian Wentworth appears to be just your typical upper crust blue blood. However he is a bit unusual in that his mother is Egyptian. Though most people are nice about it, he has long resented how most people have acted as though there was something a little wrong with that. Then came the stream of artifacts "rescued" from Egyptian tombs he decided to do something about it. His ultimate goal would be to kill all the explotiters of Egypt and collect all the lo…

As a type of Pulp setting, this one is probably one of my favorites, the Flash Gordon/Buck Rogers type of world. What are some great "Raygun Future" settings out there?

The Article At Variety Casting Johnson in the role should guarantee a generous measure of attention to the movie--he is, after all, this century's Schwarzenegger, in terms of charisma and box-office popularity. And this movie will need that sort of attention, considering we're talking about a character few people will have heard of today unless they're serious pulp-novel fans. Still, it is good to see a superhero movie that isn't based on a Marvel or DC character. We could use some more of those as far as I'm concerned. There it is for anyone who's interested.

Iron Man 3 director, Shane Black, has announced he is going to make Doc Savage film. This news leaves me asking is it possible today to make a Doc Savage film that is both good and profitable? Don't get me wrong, I'm not trolling. I like pulp. I liked the recent John Carter movie and I like the TV series The Cape. However neither of those made money. The movie The Shadow and The Rocketeer also lost money. I suspect the new Lone Ranger movie will make money, but based on its trailer and comments made by its director, I have much less faith that it won't suck. Dreamworks which owns the movie rights to the Lone Ranger set certain rules using the Lone Ranger. …

have to say, I wasn't to thrilled at first with a lot of the initial casting. Not sure why, I suppose I was just visualizing things a touch differently, and it seemed they were trying to toss in to much Xena into my REH..... However, with the recent passing of Frazetta, and going over a lot of the great Art the man produced, I couldn't help but notice when the pics of Jason Momoa started to come out as Conan, (And I defended his casting as Conan to more then a few people telling them to wait and see...)... I have to say....Dude looks like he stepped off a Frazetta Painting.....which works for me. So far really the best thing the nit pickers can Pick …

WORLD OF KONG INTRODUCTION The World Of Kong: A Natural History Of Skull Island is an art book filled with design and concept work from the people at Weta Workshop for Peter Jackson's film King Kong. Presented as if Skull Island really existed, the book shows dozens of animals created for the Skull Island sequences, few of which actually appeared in the final film. Each creature has a name (usually given in Latin), a translation of its name, a general size listing, and a few paragraphs of descriptive text. Material perfect for adaptation into the game system of your choice! The character sheets presented here are my efforts to offer the denizens of Skull Islan…

I just bought the Justice Inc. box set with the Lands of Mystery for only $10.00 plus $6.00 shipping and handling! I can't wait for this to come in the mail. Lands of Mystery sells for $90.00! on Amazon and i am getting it and the Justice Inc box set for $10.00! WOOT! Man I am playing this game! This was in a lot of ways a ground-breaking Hero product. It was one of the first to change how martial arts worked and just was a lot of fun. I first played it in Job Corps and I played a WW1 boxer who used to be a demolitions man in the army. Awesome!

I haven't bought any books yet but before I drop some cash on PDF's I would like to know wht I need to run Pulp Hero. Thanks

I am in the final stages of completing a deck plan for a small tramp freighter. I have completed most of it and am tweeking the final layouts for berthing and the various messing. I have been using several references but cannot find a complete crew list for a ship circa 1935. The ship I am mapping is a small one of around 250ft. Anyone know of any crew listings for small freighters in the period?

Well we've had John Carter, the Lone Ranger, and Green Hornet. Theres talk of Doc Savage. But what do we say of the Legend of Tarzan? At least the trailers don't seem to show Jackson being the real hero.

http://www.voynich.nu/s_intro.html http://www.voynich.nu/extra/aes.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voynich_manuscript (Obligatory Wikipedia link) Apparently a 200 plus page manuscript that has defied translation from run of the mill cryptologists to military encryption analysts. Evidence, some of which is circumstantial connects the book to John Dee, and possibly places the author as Roger Bacon making the manuscript 700 plus years old. A perfect source for a Pulp mastermind's next occult plot. One of the articles say the book was valued at $160,000 in 1961 so for modern day games it would be a priceless artifact. I notice Susano mentioned the Anti…
