We’ve got something cooking for the Pulp Hero line that I hope y’all will enjoy. While I was writing PH, I had some ideas for scenarios that I want to write up. For the next several months my workload basically involves editing and rewriting, and I can only do that for so many hours a day before my brain begins to hurt. So, during the little bit of “free timeâ€ I try to allow myself each evening when I’m not laboring under a tight deadline, I prefer to work on a short writing project — it exercises different creative “muscles,â€ and keeps me fresh and focused on each day’s editing work. To fit that particular bill, we’re launching a new type of…

Well I got sucked into the game Evil Genius and lost my entire Saturday. And then I got to thinking. What a game universe. Hmmm.....

Secret decoder rings? Hardcover edition of Pulp? AND ONLY AT GENCON? Aaaaghhh!!! Hardly needs to be said, Mr Long, but if you make enough of these for general sale through the online store I'm interested. GenCon is only a dream for me this year, alas, but I'd certainly pay the extra for PH in hardcover. If you happen to accidentally forget about one of the copies and leave it under the table until after the Con ends, maybe...?

PULP HERO!!! It's the one genre book I have really been looking forward to...and money is just too tight. Having trouble just making ends meet, as it were. I've gone from in a six month span of having quite a bit of "disposable income", to just barely living "from paycheck to paycheck". My lady has been out of work for over a year now, and the savings are gone. She's been awfully depressed because she can't find work. HELL...she's even applied to "fast food" joint's, and can't even get a job there. She's over 50, had heart problems shortly after she lost her last job (they had to place a stent in one of her arteries to relieve the blockage). I hope that thi…

For those who asked to be kept informed about the progress of the Pulp SF setting I've been working on, here ya go: I just sent the layouts of Hero Plus Adventure #2, Solar Smith And The Sky-Pirates Of Arcturus!, to Andy to check over and spiff up a bit. There are layout tricks he can pull that I don't know how to do yet. Hopefully we'll have SSatSPA ready for sale in a couple of days. I'm now working on HPA #3, a Dark Champions scenario featuring Penny Dreadful called The Alchemy Of Love. I first wrote it up years and years ago, and I'm still really pleased with it. Hopefully you'll feel the same. After that, it's probably back to more PH adventures, but…

I was just sitting down to start the layout for Solar Smith, when what to my wondering eyes should appear but the FedEx deliveryman with a boxful of Pulp Hero Secret Decoder Rings! The Secret League of Heroes lives!!!! (Man, we really need a smilie for "cackling maniacally but without real malice.") At least getting them to GenCon in my luggage should be easier than the year I made the Hero Games pocketknives: "Sir, do you have anything sharp in your luggage?" "Uhhh, yeah, one hundred somethings."

Pulp archtypes. 1 2

So, let us create a list of the archtypes featured within the Pulp genre (and its sub genres) so as to help us (and by us I actually mean me, I'm thinking of running a pulp game.) So, let us go: Costumed/gimmick Detectives, e.g the spider, the Spirit, Grey Shirt, The Sandman Costumed Adventurers: e.g The Phantom, The Terror Adventurers: e.g Indiana Jones, the gang from The Mummy. More than mere men: e.g Doc Savage Dames, Damsels, Love interests: e.g The woman in Red Jungle Kings: Tarzan, The Phantom, Jill of the Jungle Ethnic stereotype characters: e.g Fu Man Chu, almost every minority. Better than average guys: Doc Savage's league, the gang from the …

But, I'm not going to Gencon :-). Who wants to buy it for me or will I have to wait (like I did for GOOs hardcover Authority) for it to show up on ebay after the con?

The HERO System version of the Kriegsmaschinen is up, at www.blackwyrm.com/extras.htm. The Kriegsmaschinen are giant war machines provided to the Nazi party by Dr. Prometheus during World War II. They will appear in BlackWyrm Games' upcoming book The Fires of War.

Fans of "masked men of mystery" style pulp games should enjoy the Scorpion who fights crime with martial arts, gadgets, and a sedan. http://www.blackwyrm.com/extras.htm

I don't care to craft a delicate way to put this, so I'm just going to ask. I'm curious how different people handle racist or otherwise bigoted pulp archetypes. For example, the childlike Chinese cook who pronounces R's as L's; the cowardly Black manservant; the tribesman with the bone through his nose; etc. Do you avoid them, embrace them, transform them into something more palatable, use them as sly social commentary, or what?

I'm glad that Pulp Hero is coming out. I'm sad that a separate Pulp Hero forum has been created. My problem is that many of the ideas I have been interested in recently have pulpish aspects, but are not pure pulp. I used to go automatically to "Other Genres". Now I have to choose between here and there. Anyway, I recently started a thread called "Two Campaign Ideas" on the "Other Genres" board. Arguably, at least one of these ideas could go here. I'd love your input. Please take a look. http://www.herogames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=34247

Over on another board the subject of the J.I. classic "Lands of Mystery" came up. Has there been any discussion about doing a version for the new Pulp Hero line?

The Fires Of War, BlackWyrm Games' character book of golden age superhumans and pulp novels, is accepting pre-orders now. Cheer for heroes like: Doc Epoch and his Timesavers, who protect the timestream from those who would tamper with it; Quincy Harkness, vampire hunter; Quentin "King Congo" McKenzie, explorer and gamesman extraordinaire; Hiss at villains like: The Emperor of Heaven, Chinese ruler of the Red Moon that sometimes orbits Earth; Maximus Rex, the dinosaur leader of the Saurian Dominion; Fantasia DuPris, femme fatale, and her lizard-like bodyguard, Scaleface; The book, the second in the Algernon Files line, contains over a hundr…

Has anyone ever tried doing anything with real-world people from the 20's-40's who could have been pulp characters? My personal favorites are both from Mongolia, oddly enough. The first is Roy Chapman Andrews, the explorer and paleontologist who went looking for fossils in Mongolia in the middle of the Chinese Civil War. Not only did he have to face the unforgiving Gobi, he got in battles with bandits, dealt with suspicious government officials who thought he must be either a spy or a treasure seeker, did some medical work for various local tribesmen, and somehow during all this found the time to dig up a few fossils. I imagine him as a very high-point total characte…

Aside from the better-known Sherlock Holmes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle also wrote a short series of stories that dealt with Professor George Edward Challenger, gadfly of the Victorian scientific establishment and diehard iconoclast. With the Challenger stories, Doyle attempted to do for the young men's adventure story market what Holmes had done for the mystery genre. In that he was fairly successful - while Challenger never enjoyed Holmes' popularity, the first Challenger story, The Lost World, had a hand in kick-starting the moribund "lost land" adventure story. The theme, of humans visiting a remote and isolated area to discover dinosaurs alive in our time, was to be revi…

Pulp Reading 1 2 3 4 5

I'm sure plenty of you are interested in the pulp genre/era and have done your own researching and reading on the topic. What books have you run across that you'd recommend? The PH draft bibliography is already about 2,500 words long, but there's always room for more.
