I'm currently running a game of Horror Hero. The setting is modern, on a small island of the coast of finland, where there lies an Estate that was built in the 1300's and added onto over the years, Including extensive use in WWII. The Game is a mix between Red Rose by Stephen King, House on Haunted Hill (The 1990's version) and H.P. Lovecrafts Chuthulu Mythos. The Game also revolves around the bloodline and family. One member of the party is a distant realative who has just inhertited the estate. I'm looking on how to build things like: a) The Necronomicon and other nasty books Other Beings whose very presence drains sanity. I've decided that Long las…

Hi all I thought after lurking for a couple of months or so, I'd better take the plunge and make that first post. Apologies to everyone if this has been covered elsewhere and I've missed it; I've been trying to search for all the Pulp related threads to check but may not have gone back far enough. Our (sadly ever-shrinking) group has a rotating GM policy and I'm up after the next change. Despite having been a fan of HERO for many moons I've never got anything more than a couple of one-shots off the ground, so I decided that rather pick up the Earthdawn game I ran last time up, I'm going to give them something else to chew on. I should also add at this point that…

“And when Hell is full, the Dead shall walk the Earth…†That is what the preachers used to say, but no one believed them. Until it happened. You see it all started with the flu. The Black Flu. First the victims would get what seemed to be bad cold, then recover for a few days then suddenly erupt in black swollen lesions across their bodies then intense fever, shivering and vomiting and eventually death. Millions died across the globe as the vector of the infection was never isolated. Most civilized nations declared martial law but as more and more military and law enforcement personal fell victim to the Black Flu, anarchy reigned. Cities become battlegrounds as…

Anyone want to try their hand at some of the characters from the manga and anime Saiyuki (aka what Journey to the West would be like if all the characters were bishies). Despite that somewaht dismissive descprtion, it really is an alarmingly good series, in which someone is casuing 'demons", who had previously lived in harmony with humans, to turn vicious and run amok. A monk named Genzo is sent to find out the cause of the problem, along with three demon companions inclduing -- get this -- Son Goku. (Yes, Dragonball was at least partially inspried by the folktale Journey to the West). Each of the demon companions has different abilities, and Genzo has a demon-dispe…

Some people love it, others hate it, and the rest have no idea what I am talking about. Has anybody taken a stab at building any of the characters from this anime for Hero system? What about building an Eva or and Angel? I hear that GOO is doing a couple of BESM source books for the series. It got me to thinking about the role-playing aspects of something like this. It seems that it would be a pretty daunting design task.

Having found the most splendid 'Master List of Disadvantages' on the web, I wondered if there was an equivalent (either a personal webpage or even a published product) which collated all of the various talents, knacks, perks, clever use of powers and other useful little tricks that have been scattered through various products over time?

I often watch movies, read books and play computer/console games that I'd like to develop as RPG settings. A lot of you (all) do, as well, judging by the amount of material here in the "Other Genres" forum. What other settings, not previously published as PnP RPGs, are we interested in playing? Three of mine are: The Phantasy Star series of games by Sega, particularly 3 and 4. A superpower-scaled science fantasy setting on an artificial world, particularly in 3, where the "world" is actually a spacecraft composed of seven gigantic habitation domes. The film Dark City. Another artificial world setting in which aliens periodically revise both the settin…

I just got done reading The Savage Tales of Solomon Kane. It was my second exposure to Kane - my first was somebody's pastiche of the character - and I found the Howard Solomon Kane stories to be superior heroic fiction. I think there was maybe some "bleed-over" from Conan's personality later on in the stories, but I imagine that happened during Howard's heyday, when the editors were asking him for as many Conan stories as he could write. Anyway, I knew that Mike Surbrook has posted his own version of the character, but I think I last checked it over a year ago and I scrupulously avoided referring to it while I worked out my version. Solomon L. KaneVal Char Cost Roll …

Although the HERO System is not as commonly used for comedy as some other games, I've been seeing a lot of stuff lately that seems to be, if done properly, gamable but which involves characters who have traits that are distinctly humorous. First of all, how do you model comedic characters? Obviously there are a lot of ways to use Disadvantages to reflect humorous traits. Characters with particular obsessions have Psych Lims, a character can have a Phycial Lim to reflect being clumsier than their DEX would indicate (i.e. they're OK in a combat but tend to trip on their own two feet out of it -- the Usagi Tsukino syndrome). How you would reflect a character who is natu…

Hi All. I am considering starting up a new campaign, but before getting too far along, it would be nice to get some feedback on the concepts involved. So any input that you can give would be appreciated. This campaign takes place on a frontier world which is on the edge of a galactic empire. The feel I’m going for in the game is based on several sources. It draws a bit from Star Wars, a bit from WH40K, a bit from Call of Cthulu, and a bit from the old west. As is common in many “star empire†type games, there are a collection of beings who ruled the galaxy long before modern times, and have since vanished (but not without leaving behind some inter…

I was discussing the mythology Joss Whedon set for BtVS and Angel. -Giles to Scoobies, BtVS "The Harvest, Part 2" And in Angel episode 103 "A Hole in the World" we get to see one of the Old Ones, Illyria, and learn about things like the Deeper Well. My question is, how can we design Old Ones, demons, and vampires to fit this cosmology? Are demons weak Old Ones, or servitors thereof? The Toruk-Han from BtVS S7 are apparently either the proto-vampiric demons or the first iteration of mixed demon-human vampires (but in the latter case, why are they too locked away beyond the Hellmouth?), so it could go either way. If the Toruk-Han are the first g…

Greeting HEROdom, please I need your help. I need to locate Ambience Music??? Links are good, but please be specific as I am still unlearned on how to find and download stuff. Jungle sounds day & night - disturbing and alien to northerners (Think Tarzan, Land of the Lost, etc...) and (Animal roars, screams, etc...) Tribal war drums - the natives are restless (Again, think Tarzan, Land of the Lost, etc...) Waterfall - Niagra level with jungle background (A cliffhanger for real) Aztec/Maya/Toltec "Tribal Chants†or African "Tribal Chants†or Meso-amerindian "Tribal Chants†Please and thank you QM

So it appears I have gone insane. A month ago I started work on a Fantasy Hero game. Posted a bit about it in the FH forum. One of the critical elements was a number of distinctive non-elemental schools. Then I bought Turakian Age. I wish I didn't. I liked it, but it derailed my thought/creative process for over two weeks. I've just finally gotten "back on track" though. Now, however, I'm left with something that in no way resembles the original concept: Some people, not many, have access to magic. For years it has remained sequestered, behindthe scenes, but the increasing urbanization of the world have brought magic-weilding cultures into conf…

What sort of thing would help if I wanted to play inthe world of Kiyazaki's classic post-holocuast TV series Future Boy Conan? (Which, like Detective Conan, has no link whatsoever to Howard's barbarian warrior-hero....) Basically, a combiantion of war and tectonic disaster has swamped most of the Earth under the sea. Mankinf survivies on scattered islands in the vast world-ocean. Conan, the hero of the series, is a young boy who with his astronuat grandfather are the sole inhabitants of Remnant Island. It's an idyllic life that is shattered when a girl from a distant island named Lana washes up on the shore -- with government agents from Industria (a totaltitaran tec…

Greetings all, I recently picked up the RIFTS China World Book, mainly because it was loaded with descriptions of an assortment of Chinese goblins and demons. Having looked it over, I'd love to try and add these guys to THE HERO SYSTEM ASIAN BESTIARY, but I'd like to look at some non-gaming sources in order to do it. Does anyone know of any books (in English) that detail the various demons and goblins of Chinese myth? Especially the inhabitants of the various hells and the like. Obscure sources are fine, as I live near both the University of Maryland (College Park) and the Library of Congress. If you want, I can give a list of the various demons and goblins I am lo…
