I had a thought for a movement limitation which, as far as I can recall, doesn't already exist as a standalone -- "No Combat Movement" -- the rationale being that the movement, whatever it is, requires sufficient attention and/or resources that it reduces the user's DCV in exactly the same way as non-combat movement does, regardless of the speed at which the character is moving. Of course, this effect is already covered by the "Concentration - throughout" limitation, so it's not strictly necessary, or even desirable. However, there are other instances in which a power-specific limitation could be duplicated by generic limitations, so what the hell.

This is probably inapropriate for the 5th edition rules, so I put it here: I am trying to remember an OLD conversation (It does not seem to be in the Archieves) about Foci that you participated in. It came up because of a ruling you made about how Foci work in a Variable Limitation. One poster suggested that adding a new catagory (Similar to Personal/Universal) to the Foci rules would be helpful. I can not remember his terminology for the catagory, nor what you suggested using for the terminolgy instead. The thing the catagory did was determine where the power came from. The following is my terminology, if you recall (I don't think you will, but hope tha…

I've been trying to figure out the mass for the "Full Body Armor" listed on SH 155, and I'm coming up with some confusing results. First, does the weight table on 5E 334 refer to the TOTAL defense of the armor (i.e. PD + ED) or to a general DEF value (so that "defense 4" gives both 4 PD and 4 ED)? Second, the text indicates that full coverage armor weighs 2.5 kg at DEF 2, while the table lists it as 5.0 kg for the same defense--which is it? Under a best-case interpretation the armor comes out at 40 kg, which still seems like a lot of weight--my 13 STR character is going to be at -2 DCV, - 1" of movement, and will burn 1 END per turn just standing around in …

Anyone familiar with Raziel from the Legacy of Kain series? If so, how would you create his ability to rip the souls out of a person and suck them in to heal? I know the heal would be an Aid, but how do you rip someones soul out? A TK that affects Desolids? Is a dead body a focus or a conditional power thing? I only ask because I have a habit of overcomplicating powers with too many things attached to 'em, and everyone on this site is reeeeally good at making powers simple and effective. I dont even wanna contemplate Kain or Raziels points... or Mobius. Ouch. -=Grim=-

It has been said that Physical Disadvantages are what your character can not do, and Psychological Disadvantages are what they will not do. Expanding on that, Dependencies are about things your caracter must do, and Suceptabilities are things that they must not do. Broadly speaking then, Social Limitations would include things your character should not do. So what about what your character may not do? Should Vows and Oaths be broken out into a seperate category from Psychological Disadvantages?

The concept is a character that is glowing so brightly that someone looking right at him will be blinded. Obviously this is some sort of flash … but what I’m looking for is something that will affect opponents who simply *target* him whether or not they actually hit or miss and something that will not eat up one of the character’s actions. My thought is that Damage Shield meets most of these requirements but I have two very sticky issues with it. First DS only works on attacks that hit. Secondly DS does not affect ranged attacks. My inclination to solve the first issue would be to create a custom increase to the cost of DS to have it affect attacks …

Many Many Moons ago there were many discusions about a ruling steve had made about Foci in VarLims (Still disagree with him). Somebody had a suggestion of adding another criteria to Foci to solve the problem (It had to do with if the power was inherently in the item or not)

I'm working on a character that has powers which he can only use while standing in water. This could be a full-blown lake, river, stream or the like. I figure this could also be a small puddle, or a rainstorm. Heck, throw a bucket of water on him... and stand back. Anyway, while building his powers, I saw the "Only Works In Water" limitation under the catch-all "Limited Power" at a value of -1 1/2. Would you take it as is, or lower the modifier to -1? Where I seem to be having the confusion is one of his powers is AoE:Radius, which is spherical. Therefore half of it's above water. Should I change it to "Only When PC Is In Water; -1" ? Your opinions wou…

What is the most effective way (and I know there are no published guidleines for this for various reasons) to convert BESM attributes and special attacks to HERO powers and spells? Some things do not trnalsate. For example, in BESM after your frist Special attack you get all your other Speical Attacks at a SUBSTANTIAl discount, which encoruages characters to have a "attack for every occasion" at avrious power levels. Also BESM uses fixed damage unless you roll a critical hit, while HERO rolls dice on all attacks 9although once you get to a certain dice level you can reliably determine how much BODY you'll roll on a specific attack when you hit) and you can tone down …

My friend's dad has this weird thing so if you change the termostat up or down when he is sleeping, he wakes up and can't sleep normally for the rest of the night. How would you build that? Bill Hice

Assuming a character's focus is not a one-of-a-kind item, how long would you rule that it takes to rebuild it if it is stolen or broken? Is there a rule on this in one of the books that I missed?

How many maximum points are PCs in the different universes (Marvel, DC, Image, TMNT, etc) and your own? Should characters be allowed no restrictions if its a good conception? I am thinking that Hulk, Superman, Spawn, Badger are all overcost for PCs in their universes.

One other thing irked me during my first game of Hero (besides no attack then move, which is in a separate thread): Once you act in a phase, you can no longer abort until the next phase. This restricts high dex characters to these two options: 1.) Hold your action until everyone has gone so you can abort if you need to (which totally negates the whole "going first" benefit, since a low dex character can abort even though he hasn't gone yet). 2.) Go first (which is what high Dex is supposed to do), and then be completely helpless while everyone else in the round gets to go. And since they watched you go and do your thing, they *know* you can't abort, s…

I'm trying to figure out a night operations skill, the skill of working, moving, fighting etc at night as you would see with certain special forces type soldiers. I'm not talking about seeing at night, or blind fighting just a skill to represent experience working in dark conditions, noise and light discipline, experience "feeling" the ground as you move to avoid tripping, being aware of the sounds around you etc. Any ideas?

I figured this would be the place to ask. I Love the Hero System. I hate looking at a pile of monopoly dice. Once, at a hobby shop, a few years back, I saw a type of die that I thought was very cool. They had them in all different sizes (ie d20, d12, d10, d8, d6, etc.) but, they weren't shaped like traditional dice. Instead, they were shaped like long crystals, of a sort that, if you were to spin them, they would almost look like "rupies" from the Legend of Zelda. I would like to pick up a bunch of d6s in this style for my upcoming Champions game. Does anyone know who makes these?

I played my first game of Hero (Champions) yesterday. I really enjoyed it, but one thing irked me - after you attack, you can't move. Coming from D&D, I am used to the "half move and attack or full move" restriction, and I think it makes a lot of sense... but why oh why can't you attack then move in Hero? It seems to really restrict the player's option for tactics. In my game yesterday, they were plenty of times when I would have attacked then moved behind cover or something similar, but that option just doesn't exist. Is there a reason for this? Do you think there would be a big problem with allowing attack then move? -Nate

I'm thinking of running a session of Fantasy Hero at a local con in a few months. I am planning on running for 6 players and am going to use pre-generated characters. Most of my Hero system gaming has been with people very familiar with the system. Anyone have any tips on introducing newbies fairly painlessly?

I'm trying to build something similar to the GL power ring/ lantern battery effect. It would seem to me that the HS5E solution to this would be that the power ring (or soul gem in this case) has an Endurance Reserve with the limitation only recovers when in contact with lantern battery. Any suggestions on the lantern battery half of the equation? Is it just a big Endurance Reserve that automatically grants END to the ring or does it need a mechanism to do so . . . say for example Aid with all the appropriate bells and whistles added? My version of the battery would actually be a function of a base's AI, so it is a little higher end than GL's EverReady.

Is there a delicate way of voicing one's opinion to the GM about how concept boundaries are handled? My GM sets the stage and then lets the players build whatever they want, and even he is often frustrated with the results. I'm in a medieval fantasy game where the brick has a 70STR, and a 32DEX (in a game with starting DEX max of 30). No particular rationale for it to be that high, just that the player had all these points left over from making a simple brick. Sort of leaves us martial artists with egg on our faces... What the GM did eventually was impose a 2RP per 1AP cost on STR. But that only solves one isolated problem. My preference is to play a heavie…

I cant, for the life of me, remember all of the "classes" of characters for the Hero System. I remember Brick, Mentalist, and Martial Artist, but I know that there are way more types of characters for the game. I know they arent classes, but more like niches for characters to fill, created to let you know which types of powers you need to fill to have a well-rounded superheroic team or adventuring party. Does anyone remember the offical niches/classes? Brick... Mentalist... Martial Artist... and... uh...um... ARGH! -=Grim=-

I posted this in the Champions Board but thought I'd ask here too. How would you build a web power that is more like a spider's web than Spider-Man's webs. Trigger? Time Delay? I went with 5d6 entangle, personal immunity, trigger, sticky, cumulative, and area of effect (hex). I was thinking about maybe invisible too, like the silk is too fine to see so you walk right into it.

As always, one of those "I don't have my book handy" questions... Are fewer dice rolled on knockback if the individual is knocked unconscious by the initial blow? I think this was an arbitrary ruling by a long ago GM in a game I played, but I wanted to verify (because I've never implemented it in my games). Example: Mr. Fist hits The Human Target with a Martial blow of some kind, doing 12 BODY. He'd normally roll 3d6 (2D6 base, +1D6 for it being a Martial Manuever) and subtract it from the 12. But on the blow The Human Target is rendered unconscious before the KB is even applied. He therefore is an unresisting target. Is there a subtraction of 1D6 from the…
