I have the following Shielding Device in my sci-fi setting: Personal Shield: Force Field (20 PD/20 ED) (Protect Carried Items), Miniaturization (+1/2) (75 Active Points); Ablative BODY or STUN (-1), 4 Continuing Fuel Charges lasting 1 Extra Phase each (-1/2), IAF (-1/2). I want to creat a device that allows to convret the shield energy into a destructive shockwave. The idea is that if the shield has 20/20, he will do something like 10 dc damage. I can be used only if the shiled is on. and afterward you can't use the shield for some time. Ideas?

Normal senses provide only limited Discriminatory abilities, so what information would you give a character if they bought the full Discriminatory and/or Analyze for a normal sense? I'd like to compile a list as an aid for GMs. You can quote the next post and fill it in like a form if you like to contribute.

These Bleeding Rules are not mine. They were made by Abraham (bram) Isgar, who is the GM for the Low Fantasy game i play in. These rules were created by him after we found a significant chance of lots of bleeding from minor wounds and that it was too easy to stop bleeding from major wounds. So we made this system. This makes minor wounds stop bleeding easier, and lager wounds become more life threatening, as an aorta doesn't stop bleeding on a 6-21 on 6d6. New Bleeding Rules Characters track BODY damage in two parts: total BODY lost (ie, the normal damage total), and Bleed. Character start with 0 Bleed, and every time they take BODY, they take an equal amount of…

can you buy CSLs specifically for ECV...and if so can you buy EOCV and EDCV separately?
Last reply by Vondy, -
You know, I understand that HERO is a roll under system. This made sense back in the day when HERO 4 was designed. But why has HERO just not gone to "3d6+OCV > 10+DCV?" In other words - why go with the roll-under, rather than roll-above mechanic? It sure would simplify stuff for players coming from any of the big "gateway" games of Storyteller or D&D. Hell, I *prefer* 3d6, roll-under systems and I think it'd make more sense. I'm thinking about writing a PDF showing how the system and it's rolls are affected - but other than combat and skills, what other rolls are "roll under" rather than "roll high?" That said: How do you simplify skills? Like…

I was just watching a US Karate Competition. It came to the wood breaking contest, where the contestants can arrange boards around them (held by assistants) and then have 8 seconds to strike as many as possible, getting scored on how many they break, and with a minimum of 1 strike per limb (after the 4 strikes you can use whatever method you like). So, these have to be forceful attacks, enough to break 2-4 boards at a time (sorry, I forgot to get the thickness - 3/8" I think). Here are the results: Chip Townsend - 26 boards with 21 strikes Clinton Murphy - 24 boards with 11 strikes Jason Mumaw - 22 boards with 12 strikes Larry Field - 20 boards with 20 str…

The Other Ways Of Using Luck are given on page 199 of 5ER and on page 128 of FREd. How many people use these methods or have their own luck rules they would care to share? Our current house rules are as follows: However I kind of think that this is pehaps too powerful. It makes Luck too much of a good deal. That is why I am seeking input and/or ideas.

This is for a Champions game. So far I've come up with either an entangle that uses Con to escape or a drain verses either dex or spd. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Saw the thread over in the questions section about these. The electric bullets I'm aware of are not a non-lethal variant- they are in effect a normal bullet with a electrical charge. The idea is to increase the knock-down power of the weapon, not reduce the damage of the bullet hit in favor of an electrical charge. The idea of it being less-lethal comes from how police are trained- to fire and keep firing until the target drops. If the bullet works as it should, a single hit should cause the target to halt his movement and quickely drop. It's less lethal because the guy is shot fewer times- thus less blood loss and easier treatment. A simple KA plus NND …

Need help from your genius minds, would really appreciate it, thanks! Btw, these are generally superhero genre if anyone wonders about power limits and what not. 1) A character has trouble controlling his powers (like a teenage mutant for example). So, if walks around angry one day, a car next to him might explode (or if he's sad, a well might try out, etc). It's out of his control to stop these things. I thought of making it a psychologial lim. at first and just let the GM specify it, but the problem is that he, most of the time doesn't realise what he's done or how it was done. 2). I want a character to be able to autofire an entire area. Normally this w…

Tracking Acceleration 1 2

All right, this is doubtless covered in FRED somewhere, but I'm not seeing it. At least, I'm not seeing it clearly; I have an idea of the way it works, but I'm not quite sure. This is where all of you 20-year veteran know-it-alls come in. OK, I understand that accelerating or decelerating is a Zero Phase Action, and that a character (or vehicle, etc.) can accelerate/ decelerate up to 5" per 1" hex travelled. Thus, a character who decides to accelerate on his Phase is travelling at 5" after moving 1", 10" after moving 2" (if his Combat Velocity allows it), and so on, up to his maximum Combat Velocity per phase. Same with deceleration. Also, even when using nonc…

I often have a problem with larger attacks having a reduced standard deviation (a narrower distribution). I have thought of this optional method for producing (almost) the same distribution for all damage and effect rolls. Instead of rolling the number of dice indicated by the size of the attack or other Power, roll a set number of dice, and consider each of them to be multiple rolls. This fixed number may be chosen once per campaign, the GM may allow each player to choose, or it could be chosen differently for different types of attacks (e.g. 2 dice for effect rolls, 3 dice for Normal Attacks and most Killing Attacks, and 1 die for firearms). I will use X to …

In my play-by-post, one of my NPCs just rolled an 18 on a Seduction roll. I like to have a roll of a 3 be a resounding success and the roll of an 18 to be a major failure. But I have no idea how to interrprut an 18 for a seduction roll. Any suggestions?

I'm planning a near-future sci-fi militaristic campaign and have a slight problem: I'm going to ask all players to buy Social Limitation: Subject to Orders Very Frequently (14- ), Major, to represent their ties to the military organization which they are part of. Do they also need to get "Hunted: MoPow, NCI, Watching" to represent the military command that keeps track with their actions?

Suppose that as a Limitation, you want to make the activation of a defensive power take a Half-Phase action (instead of a Zero-Phase action). I would assume that this would be an Extra Time limitation, but I don't see this option anywhere on the list. If this is a viable limitation, please tell me what it's worth. If it is already in the book, please tell me where I can find it. Thanks!

A Treatise On "Only vs. (X) SFX" Limitations 1 2
by Guest Black Lotus- 40 replies

While there are several other threads concerning the "Only vs. (X) SFX" Limitation, I feel that I have enough to say about this issue to warrant a new thread. Here, I will examine a number of scenarios concerning "Only vs. (X) SFX" Limitations, and I will draw factual conclusions from said scenarios as scientifically as possible, from an unbiased point of view. For the purposes of this exercise, let us define one dozen concrete examples of Power SFX: "Bullets"; "Lasers"; "Fire"; "Electricity"; "Cold"; "Sonic"; "Darkness"; "Holy"; "Gravity"; "Particle Beam"; "Poison"; and "Acid". Also for the purposes of this experiment, we will assume that all offensive Powers and …

Summoner 1 2

I was just watching a buddy of mine play a video game and one of the characters in the game inspired me with an idea for a Champions-ish type character. I'm not sure just how feasable it might be though. Basically, the character would be a mystic/spellcaster type, but the spells he casts are summoning spells. He'll have a number of creatures he can summon, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. He can only summon one at a time though. While the creature is summoned, the spell caster basically sits back and lets his monster fight for him, while he stands on the sidelines kinda like a really involved cheerleader (but not necessarly screaming "Heromon, justice at…

I came up with a way of doing invulnerability (to everything) and immunity (to a specific special effect) that doesn't cost huge amounts of points and doesn't use any (okay, no more than one) questionable constructs. First, buy the Automaton Power Takes No Stun. If you're buying immunity buy it "Only Vs. X". In the latter case, a kind GM (incluidng me) wouldn't require you to buy all of your defenses at 3x cost with this (though I would for full invulnerability). This is actually the trickiest part of the whole thing. Next, buy resistant defenses equal to twice the campaign maximum Damage Class. That's enough defenses to totally bounce the BODY from an incoming …

Brain dump warning... here I go again. I may be speaking to something that has already been discussed... but I wanted to throw this out for folks to comment on. There have been a number of threads that read something like, "How much is X Limitation worth?" or "Shouldn't Y limitation be worth less/more?" etc. A lot of this seems... to me... to be based on a lot of old school carryover from past editions. Certain limitations "by the book" have established multipliers (OAF is -1, etc.) and these are often so ingrained through habit, that I wonder if they are correct. Now, it is VERY helpful to have a lot of different SUGGESTED limitations and their wort…

Back in the olden days, in the process of doing Ironmongery for our Star Hero campaign (OK.. it was actually our "space game"... Espionage in space), I wrote up an advantage to simulate an attack that damages armor at the same time it does damage to the target. At the time, my reasoning was simple... adding Destruction linked to an attack was cumbersome, especialy to try and tie the two damage rolls together. With the demise of Destruction and its replacement with long term drains, it became even stranger. So I set out with 5th ed to see if it balanced out the way I had it written, realized that Suppress might be my best choice for the construct, and thus... Scour: +…

This is the original filk I wrote back on the old boards, about a month before Hero System Fifth Edition hit the shelves. Fifth Edition Based on "Original Sin" original music and lyrics written by Jim Steinman I've been looking for the Fifth Edition Fourth with a twist and a bit of a spin And since I've done all of the old ones 'Till they've all been done in Now I'm just looking Then I'm gone with the wind Endlessly searching for the Fifth Edition I can talk about Linked And never draw the line But will it ever be enough I know that it'll never be enough I can argue the cost of DEX And say the cost is just fine But will it ever be…

This is a spinoff of the RPG.net thread with a similar name. I'll quote that thread's originator: I nominate Killer Shrike for Fantasy Hero, Susano for anime, and Nu Soard Graphite for mecha. Bob Greenwade for general read-worthiness. Lord Liaden gets the all time grand champeen Hall of Fame award. And Steve Long, without whom.
