I moved to Denver recently, and have been looking for Hero gamers. (Mighty thin, but I'm not writing to whine about that.) What has surprised me is how many gamers, when I mention Hero, say something along the lines of: "Oh yeah, Champions! Fantasy Hero! Those were great games!" Note the use of the past tense. This is not a dig at DOJ, who I'm sure are doing the best they can with what is probably a fairly meagre advertising budget. It just worries me how many people seem genuinely surprised to learn that Hero is still around and people still play it. For my part, I just ran a Star Hero game at BenCon here last weekend. Only drew 4 players, whi…

How do I make a scorpion character with a ranged poison attack. I was thinking it would continue damage after the main attack. Would that be ranged killing with a continuous modifier? If so how does continuous work?

I am creating a character for a Champions campaign. This character will have the ability, in a limited form, to take away another persons powers. All of them at once. He could not take away techological based powers, he could not take away magic, and he could not take away superskill. However, any mutants, radiation accidents, etc would loose all thier abilities. Drain, Suppress, transform?

Ok, so I know the various books have max ranges for weapons, right? And I know you can use the standard or more granular range modifers. And I know weapns can be bought with CSL's, only to offset range mods. I have never run into much longer range fighting (6X2.5 foot game table, I guess!) but how well do these mechanics work with a Modern or even Medieval game when scoped rifle or longbow ranges really make a difference?

This started many years ago when I was in college. A couple of us were up late at the Sunshine Caffe and we were discussing power gaming and we decided to create the ultimate abusive character. The result was Captian Brick.... he actually claimed himself as a focus, most of his powers had the limitation "only when thrown" and he had a follower named rick who would carry him around and throw him at bad guys. We also discovered that while followers couldn't have followers, vehicles and bases could have followers and followers could have vehicles... we came up with a string of bases and vehicles. In the end we had a character who could take out a deathstar on 375 points or …

I just saw the remake of Dawn of the Dead and it got me thinking. First a little background: I hate zombies. I hate them with a passion, ever since I saw Return of the Living Dead when I was 10 years old. That was only movie that scared me as a kid. These zombies were much worse than Romero's Dawn of the Dead zombies, You couldn't kill them (the old kill the brain bit didn't work), you couldn't burn them (that just created a lovely biochemical aerosol that rained down and animated the entire nearest graveyard), they were overcome with an insatiable hunger for brains from any source (dogs were not ignored by the zombies.) All this on top of all of the usual …

Originally I had posted this in an obscure thread in the Dark Champions forum but it didn't seem to be getting noticed there so I moved it here. I noticed something about the combat laptop computers shown in UNTIL: Defenders of Freedom. None of them have a Disadvantage or Power dealing with water. What happens if you drop it in a bucket of water? Is it automatically considered to be waterproof since it has no susceptibility to water? Or, would it malfunction since it lacks LS allowing it to survive in water?

I'm wondering how you'd create a power or group of powers dealing with the generation and control of fire. Telekinesis (Only with fire) seems like a good bet, though I'm not sure how you'd tell how much fire you can control. This also doesn't cover the generation of fire. How would you guys do this? Thanks in advance!

After writing up a new character for a game I actually get to play in (yeah!), something occured to me... Say a character has N-Ray Perception for the Sight Group, and has defined it as not being able to see through energy barriers (like FFs, FWs, damaging and non damaging fields, etc). Then say he's up against a character with a Force Field that's been bought IPE: Sight Group. What does he see? Will he still see the FF using his Sight even though it is Invisible (because the FF would be opaque to his N-Ray), or would he be able to see through the FF despite that limitation that he can't see through such things (because it's actually Invisible)?

I was trying to come up with the value for a Limitation that is the opposite of Linked. That is, I can't use Power A when I am using Power B [EDIT: and vice-versa, in case the symmetry does not appear obvious]. Which Power should take a Limitation (or should both), and what should the value of that Limitation be? Basically, I am looking for a simple Limitation-based implementation of a 2 slot Multipower (with ultimate slots rather than flexible ones). So let's figure out the effective cost based on placing the Limitation on the larger Power, the smaller Power, and both Powers. Let's call the larger Power 'A' and give it an Active Point value 'x'. The smaller Pow…

From the old days a bad guy could be made with a disadvantage slot called Villain Bonus. I saw this as a pump to cover the fact that one villian may wind up facing 2 to 6 heroes in a game. Since I have all kinds of great ideas for bad guys in the new 5th ed and am retiring most of the 4th ed guys I have a question. Since I have currently 5 heroes as listed below and currently one villian in the works for a campaign epic in my Dark Saviors milieu. What is a good rule of thumb (if there is one) on a villian bonus to hero ratio? (Considering I may not need one with two heroes vs one bad guy but may with more heroes vs one bad guy) hero 1 :275 pts martial artist/ste…

Either I'm just dumb or I missed something, but I want to ask: how do racial package deals work when you're putting a character together? Do you just plonk down X anmount of character points and okay, you're a Drakine (or whatever), or must I buy the character's CHARs up to minimum levels or what? Sorry to bug you with this, but it's been annoying me for a while & I'm hoping to get a definitive answer.

Hello, I'm fairly new to Hero from the GM side of the screen and I haven't been able to find much information in the books about what is an appropriate point level for challenging PCs. If there's a particular book I should look at for this, please let me know. In brief, I've got 3 PCs in the 250-point range and I'm trying to determine a good point value for "henchman", "sub-boss", and "boss"-type enemies. Any input would be appreciated.

On a whim, I decided to compare average damages for unmodified normal attacks vs. the same active point attacks with armor piercing. In other words, 60 active points can give you a 12d6 normal attack, or an 8d6 AP attack. Which was better? I was quite surprised at the outcome. This is what I found: AP attacks start doing STUN at earlier point levels, but the benefit is short-lived as the levels go up. It basically introduces a short-lived, bell-curve bump in your damage range… you get a slight gain over what gets past defenses. The gain goes up as active points increase until a point of diminishing returns is reached, and it comes back down. Where the curve …

Hello all, I am trying to build big red, but am unsure on how to go about creating Roller and his Combat Platform. I will supply the basic write I have for those who are not familiar with their capabilities. All ideas are appreciated. Prime's Form ...His Prime module, also known as Roller, is a small cart-shaped device that he uses to unobtrusively slip behind enemy lines. He can maintain radio control over it at distances up to 1200 miles. Having Roller present somewhere is like being there himself. He can operate by remote-control his Combat Deck module up to a distance of 1500 feet. The Auto-Launcher mounted on the Deck can use a variety of artillery and r…

I already have some ideas on this one, but.... Given a person who, prior to an accident, was in excellent physical condition and practiced an acrobatic style of martial arts, but who now is easily tired (accident dropped CON from 15 to 6, with all related Figureds going down, too) and cannot consciously remember the martial arts they once performed, what styles and/or maneuvers would you all recommend? I'm thinking Aikido, maybe Tai Chi. Note that the character is more interested in evasion and divertion than power attacks (which is good, since STR went down to 8). Also, how would you describe someone who is physically weak and lacks stamina, but is fully capabl…

Several otherwise interesting threads have been drowning in pennies as everyone puts in their $.02 on "killing attacks" and "normal attacks" over and over and over... So here's a place to explicity do that. I'm sure there have been other threads for that before, but it's obviously still a bone of contention. Perhaps if people talk about it here, they won't feel the need to talk about it everywhere else. Here's my suggestion, to rekindle the flame, as it were... Eliminate "killing attacks." Don't make it a +0 advantage on normal attacks---just eliminate them. Instead, make ED and PD cost 1.5 points per (just like armor), and put a limitation on it…

This may be better posted on the SH boards, but there's always more activity here... I was wondering if there are detailed rules for AI characters who own multiple Shells in any of the Star HERO products, or elsewhere (Ultimate Vehicle)? I'm looking for something which supports the themes of GURPS: TS. For example, Joe is an AI with a bag of skills, and has two shells: one with a slow computer but lots of weaponry, and one with a fast computer but feeble weaponry. Any idea how would these be modelled? Multiforms having zero mental characteristics? Limitations to reflect the restrictions on when Joe can change form? Similarly, are there rules which acco…

OKay, I am sure somewhere on the boards this has been discussed but i can't seem to find it... Anyway, I was just wondering what qualifies for "a specific type of negative modifier" to Penalty Skill Levels. Sure, they mention Ranged Penalties and Targeting Penalties, but what about buying PSL for something like Move By, Sweep, or a Martial Disarm? Would each of these be their own specific modifier (basically forcing me have to buy the skill for each MA Skill to offset the penalties) or what? Would "Combat Maneuver Penalties" cover everything or what? Just wondering what the "official" rules say (if anything) as I know i can make it mean whatever I want, but…

Okay, I have a confession. I just wanted to see how many people I could get to take a peek at what they probably thought was another "piss on HERO and DoJ" thread. I have done my share of bitching and moaning, to be certain... To the contrary, I just wanted a large audience to witness my humble thanks to Steve and all of the DoJ, for keeping this brilliant and fun thing alive! I am starting a Star Hero campaign, and planning it has been a blast! I've run HERO in 4 different genres now, and have yet to find one it doesnt work brilliantly in! So kudoes, gents, for keeping the best game system EVAR alive, well , and evolving. Also, a hearty thanks to the fan c…

I'm curious because the difficulty of bring new players to HERO System has been much discussed on this board (and on RPG.net). I'm just about to begin two HERO campaings (Ninja HERO and Fantasy HERO) and have six players signed up for each. Some of these players have heard negative things about HERO system (the usual - overly complicated, difficult math, yadda yadda) but still it took very little persausion on my part to convince them to give it a try. I've just told the players that I'll make it as easy for them to get into the system as I can, that I think most of the criticisms are greatly exaggerated at best, and that if they have a desire to learn more about the syst…
