    Who for Who?

Former Buffy the Vampire Slayer co-star Anthony Stewart Head was voted in a poll of readers of the British Radio Times as the favorite to play the next Doctor Who, the Reuters news service reported. The BBC has not announced who will play the SF legend, but British media say Richard E. Grant, Bill Nighy and Eddie Izzard are being considered when Doctor Who returns to TV in 2005.  (from http://www.scifi.com/scifiwire/)

Who would you choose, and why?

    Edit -
    I chose Tony Head!

Anthony's the only one I'm at all familiar with (at least, by name), so I had to go with him.

I personally would have cast Paul McGann, who played the title role in the American 1996 TV-movie. He wasn't half bad, and the movie had the decency to keep continuity with the main body of the series by casting Sylvester McCoy as the 7th Doctor to McGann's 8th.

Given an open choice, I would have given a serious look (inasmuch as the man's name can be used in the same sentence as the word "serious") at Terry Jones.

On a more whimsical note, I've long considered the idea of the Doctor being played by Mr. T: "I pity the fool that messes with my TARDIS!"

Here's what I know of Dr. Who:
He's British. He travels time (for some unknown reason), has many, many enemies. The show had really low production values. There were like umpteen actors who played the part. Geeks have retained some affinity to him. There was an attempt at a new series (on FOX?) about ten years ago that failed.

All I know is that of that list, Giles Rocks! But if it meant no chance of him playing Giles again, I'd say take someone else, please!

I voted for Anthony Stewart Head. I think he could pull off the role. But Tom Baker will always be Who to me.

I've also heard Rowan Atkinson's name suggested (ptui).

As much as I like Anthony Stewart Head, I think Richard E. Grant would make a much more interesting Doctor.

    Eddie Izzard is Just Wrong.

He's not available because he's busy playing John Constantine. "I aint got time fo jibber-jabber! I'm learnin ma lines!!"

Which would be preferable to the actual actor.

An eldritch horror from beyond reality materializes in front of John Constantine.
    Constantine: Whoah!
...and then Kung Fu kicks the horror.

I'm not familiar with Bill Nighy, but none of the other three say the Doctor to me. I kind of like the Rowan Atkinson idea, to be honest.

Rowan Atkinson DID play the Doctor, as a spoof. He later regenerated into a bunch of other people including Richard E. Grant, Hugh Grant, and finally into Joanna Lumley!

And they were all damn good. Myself, I'd like to see Joanna Lumley get another shot, but I know that'd have fans up in arms. I can imagine people here wonking on about how it was just done to be politically correct, etc. But I thought she was actually quite good.

It all depends on what their target audience is, in the end.

I don't really see the need to go with a British Actor at all.

As an American who successfully managed to see about 85% of the movies as a youth, I think it is time for a change.

We are all tired of these whiny British actors who are unable to climb up a moderate incline. (I have yet to see a show where anyone "English" climbed a hill)

    So...gice us Jackie Chan!

If not Head, I'd definitely dig Jones for the role.  And I agree I certainly wouldn't want this (potential role), or any future roles to preclude Head's revisiting Giles again.  *Personally, I'm still holding onto hope for 'Ripper' [the series, or movie].

Have we not seen "Lord of the Rings"? Orlando Bloom as legolas seems to have carried out the action hero bit quite well in that movie, and to have done similarly well in "pirates of the Carribean"

Of course I haven't watch enough behind the scenes documentaries to know how much of that was Stuntman Work . . .

Sean Connery Is in his 70's (or is it 80's now?) and still does a good action flick. Okay, not necessarily good, but he does them. although he would probably kill any man who tried calling him English.

    Pierce Brosnon did okay.

Heck, Hugh Grant made a movie outright called "The Englishman who went up a hill and came down a mountain". Of course, quite a few of those people were Welsh, but Hugh grant is as enlish as they come.

All I can think of off the top of my head.

I think that Richard E. Grant would be perfect for the role.

Track down "Withnail and I" which stars him and one of the afore mentioned McGann brothers, I can never tell them apart..
