FH Racial Packages in HD

Please forgive a newbie question but what is the best way to create a Fantasy Hero Racial Package.

Looking at the characteristics issue I may need to adjust the NCM for races / campaign options. Is it best therefore to modify an heroic template so that I have an elven template, dwarven template etc..? Presumably this is the XML stuff at the back. How do I then link this to the prefab package containing the rest of the skills and powers etc?

The packages listed do not give different base values for the characteristics, they give different starting values which the character either pays for or gets points back for, as appropriate.

Your best bet is just to use a combination of a character file and a prefab. The character file defines the starting points for the various attributes and "fixed" abilities. The prefab defines the various "select one of these abilities".

You simply open the appropriate character file and "Save As..." to create a new character.

Thanks for the reply and that seems the easiest option if I'm not going to adjust NCM for different races.

However, elsewhere on this discussion board there is a thread about options for varying NCM within racial packages and there is reference to this being explained in the manual. I'm presuming that this can only be done by editing or extending the template? In addition I would also like to be able to adjust the age ranges according to race.

Yes, if you want to customize the NCM values (essentially, alter the rules surrounding NCM), then you will need to create a custom template.

In doing this, you will be able to edit the NCM values, the Age values, and (since you're editing the template anyway), you may as well define the starting values for the Characteristics as well.

In defining the starting values for the Characteristics, note that there is a difference between BASE (the base value for the Characteristic -- free) and LEVELSTART (the starting number of levels put into the Characteristic -- for a charge).

I'll think about exactly how I want to set it up and give it a try. This is really great software!

I switched from D&D (more then 20 years playing) to Hero System about six weeks ago - slowly reading the books!! - because of the greater control. I like to run low magic campaigns (Tolkien or George Martin like) and that is not always an easy fit with D&D and the olde magic shoppe.

Hero System is very flexible and clearly has the software support to match.

No, there is not. The templates are for defining the rules for constructing abilities....not for actual purchase definitions. Use either a character "starter file" or a prefab for that.

Actually, its going to be extremely annoying to have to do a custom template for each Race just to handle NCM mods.

If there is no way to convince Steve to allow Characteristics bought as Powers to go negative in v2, even as a Campaign Rule flag, is there any way to circumvent this behaviour with a Plug in? The alternative Im left with is not using HDv2 at all for my Fantasy HERO campaigns, which would really be a bummer.

Not a chance. There's an entire subset of rules that would need to be developed in order to handle all of the complications that arise when you allow a characterstic power to go negative.

There have been plenty of suggestions for how to handle this: if it is an unmodified sell-off, then just sell it off on the characteristics tab (for a `template' type approach, this entails making a .hdc character file to use as your starting point for characters if that type....no great task at all). If it is a Modified sell-off, then either start with the low version of the Characteristic and buy it with the opposite limitation (e.g. "only in normal id") or use a muliform.

There have been plenty of suggestions for how to handle this: if it is an unmodified sell-off, then just sell it off on the characteristics tab (for a `template' type approach, this entails making a .hdc character file to use as your starting point for characters if that type....no great task at all). If it is a Modified sell-off, then either start with the low version of the Characteristic and buy it with the opposite limitation (e.g. "only in normal id") or use a muliform.

Doing a custome template for 2 or 3 races wouldnt be a chore, but doing it for 20+ certainly would, which is what Im looking at; plus this doesnt calculate costs as I intend it to; I can work around that, but the overhead involved in making and maintaining an ever growing list of Race Templates that must then be used by a "starting point" hdc is a tad unappealing. Particularly when you consider that v1 did it the way I want it to work without all of the hoop-jumping (and in fact, v1's functionality influenced my decision to proceed in the direction that I did). {The multiform and Modified sell off options you cite arent applicable to what Im doing.}

Page 79 of Fantasy HERO 1st col under Varying Characteristic Maxima By Race gives a GM very free reign to manipulate NCM without stepping on an "official ruling", and many of the Race Packages in Fantasy HERO also have negative Characteristics in their Packages. HD v1 would allow you to use negative Characteristics in Packages and apply them directly to the character, HD v2 requires you to make a custom Template and then create a character off of that Template for each such Race.

This is a very frustrating change in v2, which largely invalidates a lot of work that Ive done, and Im sure its affected at least a few others as well. Faced with HD v2 not having this functionality and apparantly with no means to override it, Ill just regretfully have to not use HD v2 for Fantasy HERO until/unless its resolved. This is unfortunate as otherwise HD v2 is great and does what I want it to do, and also because Ive done a lot of content in v2 during the beta test that may not be compatible w/ v1 (Ill have to find out), but Im not going to go back and gut the material I have so far, redesigning all the Race Packages, Templates, etc that I have just because a version change in HD invalidated a design principle which worked in the previous version.

It's unfortunate, particularly as heretofore Ive been a big proponent of HD v2 and have pushed it to my group and acquaintances; hopefully not too many of my players have bought it yet, so that they wont be too pissed at me when I tell them to continue using v1 for our FH campaign.

Im really in the dark why this change was made, and Ill be honest, very disappointed. I was really looking forward to using HD v2 to make all the various NPCs and Creatures that are coming up soon on my to do list.

HDv2 is built to support the rules of the Hero System. It will not allow negative Characteristic Powers. Period.

If you want a rules justification for it: all Powers must cost a minimum of 1 point. Per FREd. If you want more: Steve explicitly forbids it. Period. End of story.

After talking with Steve, the ability to buy negative charateristic powers was pulled from the app.

You are not being put out nearly as much as you make it out. Drop the issue, the ruling will not change.

Rulings never change until they are changed. Thats the nature of rulings. In this particular case, we're talking about a a ruling that impacts something in GMs discretion land, was previously in the application until very recently, invalidates some content developed in the previous version, and unlike some other changes such as alterations in Power Modifiers and similar is not circumventable via a Custom Modifier, Skill, Power, Talent, etc, requiring instead an external manipulation of files, 1 per instance, to circumvent. This isnt a case of "use a custom modifier for Gate" or something along those lines.

Im not asking for it to be turned back on as the default behaviour, Im just asking for a compromise, such as a Campaign Rule flag to turn the behaviour back on, or some other means to do it internally to the Character sheet automatically rather than manually hacking files individually.

I dont think its an unreasonable request. However, youve indicated that you arent going to do it.

While this disappoints me, Ive indicated that I wont be using HDv2 for Fantasy (or any other genre with a lot of disparate PC races w/ Characteristic mods for that matter) until/unless this "issue" as you call it is resolved. I wish there was some reasonable way to work around this, but if there isnt then very well.

I think this is just another one of those issues where if Steve actually used the software for CharGen he would want the changes to be made so that it would be possible to create correct racial and skills packages. The way it needs to be done now is just clunky. But since Steve really does not have any interest in the software, outside of a money-making avenue and an attempt to sell more copies of FREd to newbies, he really does not understand the dilemma.

Oh well. Perhaps v3 will be fully customizable. Then the 50% of the fan-base who do not play by standard HERO System rules will find more use for the software.

I sincerely hope that Steve isnt that mercenary -- I've got a fairly rosy mental image of him and the rest of DOJ and associated folks (including Dan, even if I wish he had better people skills from time to time ) for salvaging my favorite game system.
