    Website Port Number

My company has recently blocked off a number of ports, fearing viruses and such, so I can't see the webpage at my work computer. I can see every other page I typically look at on my lunch break, just not this one. My IT guy said that I could request the port be opened back up, if I could tell him the number. So what port number does it use?

Web pages typically use port 80 and port 8080. 8181 is apparently also used as well.

I doubt very much that the Hero Games web site uses a nonstandard port number, and if you can browse every other page on the web there's probably something else going on (like the Hero Games page being specifically blocked for some reason, probably because it's game related).

Are you going to http://www.herogames.com or http://www.herogames.com/index.jsp or something else?

The site uses port 80, which is standard for HTTP.

Some firewalls will block pages that do not have a .htm or .html extension (a fairly braindead thing to do)....or, as mentioned, the site may be blocked for content (being a game-related site).

If you can browse other sites, then it does not have to do with the port.

Most firewalls logs list what website are block and why (invaild port, invaild format i.e. jsp, or unallow content)

Your IT should be able to tell why www.herogames.com is being blocked.

Hmmm, just the kind of thing we love to have people ask of us, how to get to non-work-related sites.

(Just commenting from the IT perspective, it is cool that Steve's IT is willing to help out, though. We wouldn't just because we're way too busy with work-related stuff.)

They might be blocking websites by keyword. "Games" is a not unreasonable keyword to block from a corporate perspective, and that word is in the URL for this site.

Indeed. That is the primary reason I'm down to only posting about once a month any more. We are allowed to freely browse at work, so long as it doesn't interfere with our actual jobs. But I started having a few too many hits in the 'game' category and was asked to stop browsing here. And unfortuantely I only have time at home to hit the site about once a week.

This is why I can't check out the Hero website from work...
