Extra time (and probably other rounders) issue

If you apply the only to start modifier to an extra time power it is not rounding at each step

FOR Instance, Extra Time 1 Min (only to start) on a 300 point active power should come out to 200, instead it is coming out at 185 points

I think the reason why is because it is appling a 5/8 Lim instead of the 1/2 it should be

Err...your math is off.

Extra Time, 1 Minute is a -1 1/2 Limitation.

Applying "Only to Activate Constant or Persistent Power" halves this value, making it a -3/4 Limitation.

Take a 300 point Power and apply a -3/4 Limitation to it and you get 300/1.75 = 171.4 which is rounded to 171 points.

This is exactly what HD is doing.

OK....I actually hadn't realized that halving -3/4 to -3/8 was wrong. However, Steve backs you up, so I've got things changed.

A -3/8 Limitation when halved will now "round" to -1/2.

This will be available in the next update, which should be coming along soon (probably by Friday).

I don't think I'd fault you on that one, Dan. HERO Math is apparently not like other Math.

Dan just noticed it is rounding in the wrong direction now (it should round down)

Hence the section on Hero Math in the Hero Designer docs.

-3/8 should round "in the player's favor". In the case of a Limitation, -3/8 should be rounding to -1/2 (which is rounding down, by the way).

Right now, one turn only to start is a -3/4 lim by the app

By the FAQ
Q: Extra Time requires you to halve the Limitation’s value if it only takes additional time to activate a power, but not use it thereafter. How do you halve -3/4 and -1 1/4?

A: -3/4 would “halve” to -1/4. -1 1/4 would “halve” to -1/2.
Thus my comment (based on absolute value BTW)

Ok...Steve and I had a long talk about this one. The issue is that the way the Rules FAQ has it, the rounding of Modifiers follows very different rules from rounding in the rest of the system. Everywhere else, you round .5 in the player's favor, which (in this case) would mean rounding a Limitation "down". But the Rules FAQ had .5 rounding up....distinctly not in the player's favor.

To make a long story short, Steve agrees with the way HD is doing things, as it is consistent with the rounding rules throughout the rest of the system. The Rules FAQ is going to be changed to reflect this.

cool beans,

I thought it SHOULD be that way, but the FAQ said differently, thank you for going to bat for it...
