    Question Ultimate Brick?

Just curious how things are going with this book. We hear about Galactic Champions, the Turakian Age, and even DEMON in the weekly updates, but I haven't seen anything about TUB. Is it still scheduled for March?

Also, can you give me any info about the author, David Rakonitz? I'm not familiar with the name, but since I haven't been an "active" gamer for a few years now, that's not a huge surprise.

    Thanks!
Roleplaying has changed over the years to include politics and emotional exchanges - but never forget that in the beginning, it was all about the @$$-kicking.

Not much possibility of March, because I'm still writing TA, but you never know. I haven't mentioned it in the weekly updates because no one's working on it right now, and I didn't really see any need to say "TUB's still sittin' on my hard drive."

David Rakonitz got the TUB gig some years ago after writing an ADVENTURER'S CLUB article about "brick tricks" that Bruce Harlick really liked. Since he'd already done the work I saw no reason not to let him take a shot at updating his manuscript for 5E and our new plans. I suspect that, in the end, I'll change or add enough material that you'll see my name on the cover as well -- but as I said, I haven't really taken a look at it, so for all I know it could be an absolute gem requiring almost no work on my part.

I remember the "brick tricks" article from AC - very cool stuff. Some of it like "The Big Wrapup" has since become canon for Hero bricks.

David stopped by the old discussion boards to solicit input on what fans would like to include in his 5E Ultimate Brick manuscript. We directed him to our own fan-generated "Ultimate Brick" discussion board project, so I wouldn't be suprised if some of that material gets translated into the print UB in some form.

This has an oddly familiar ring to it.

Yeah, that was one of the reasons I picked up the new Champions. Before that, my bricks were just big lumbering guys with lots of STR and not much else in the way of offense. And I'm champing at the bit to see what gets done with these guys & gals in ULTIMATE BRICK.

BTW, does anyone know where the term 'brick' for a super-strong character came from?

I can't say if this is direct cause-and-effect, but one of the earliest villains for the Champions game was a super-strong type called Brick. He was rather like the Thing from Marvel Comics, except that instead of having skin like cobblestones, his was drawn to look like stacks of tiny bricks - literally a humanoid brick wall.

His last appearance was in the 4E VIPER sourcebook. I always guessed that he was the source of the term "brick," though of course it might have been in use earlier and he was made as a pun.

I believe this to be the truth. Most other game companies don't use the term "brick," nor is the term found in fiction anywhere else I know of -- it's usually "muscle," "brawn," "strongman," or something similar.

BTW; this is my most anticipated book in a while. I play bricks almost exclusively

I seem to remember the term "brick" going waaay further back than this.

I agree with those who want to see this book. The vast majority of my characters (both PC heroes and NPC villains) have been Brick-ish to one extent or another. I do so WANT this book.

BTW, talking about bricky matters, does anyone here have any new 'Brick Tricks', not elsewhere listed, that they'd like to share/brag about?

And does anyone else remember the brick circus in the old ALLIES book?

I always assumed it came from The Thing.

It looks like a note in the Introduction giving the true origin of the term will be called for.

    I have one:
Ring the Bell: Indirect (From Beneath Target) and Double Knockback for up to 60 pts of Strength (90 Active) (Only vs Targets on the Ground (-1/2), Gestures -1/4)(Punching the Ground infront of you), Concentration (1/2 DCV) (-1/4 Must get to one knee), Delayed Phase -1/2 (Can't do anyting else); Limited Range (STR/5 up to 12")
    Real Cost: 40 Points

Like the Carney game. A little silly, but really cool if you can pull it off.

And I do remember the Braverman Federation
