    Online rpgs

Just curious. Do you folks play rpgs online? I'm talking about Hero Central and other sites like that rather than Baldur's Gate and the like.

Do you put OpenRPG, and similiar programs in the same category as Hero Central, or do you put them in with Baldur's Gate?

(quote from the site listed below)
"OpenRPG is an Internet application that allows people to play Role Playing Games in real-time over the Internet. OpenRPG is free, open source, software, distributed under GNU/GPL license."

OpenRPG is called a "virtual table top." It is basically an enhanced chat program, specifically desinged to run a table-top style game on-line. You still have human players and a human GM. (there are also several other programs which are very similiar to OpenRPG)

I was in one game on Hero Central -- it was fun, a literal dungeon crawl. Fell apart eventually, which seems extremely common with online games. I also run a couple of PbEMs and have played in several. I also play a couple of games on Rondak's Portal, although the games I'm in are on hiatus right now.

Sounds cool. Have you used this app yourself?
A complex system that works is invariably found to have evolved from a simple system that worked.

Well now, I've been pbeming for years now, and I've only ever chat pbem'd once, but this does definately look interesting. I wonder how it actually plays out. I should give it a spin some time.

Any complaints about the products? Any comments?

Yes, I do. I have been on WebRPG for five or six years, my memory for time sucks. I even stayed there when they went pay and most people abandon ship for OpenRPG. I have tried both and have found Web to be a far better system. Mapping is eaiser, designing character sheets is easier and even the chat system is simpler. You can find me there many weekday evenings and usually Friday, Saturday and Sundays. If you give it a try, look for The Wild Hunt or End Of Legends, I'll be glad to show you around.

I have known about WebRPG and other such programs (which is obvious since I mentioned OpenRPG above), but I don't have anywhere near the level of experience that you have with them.

Could you give out a little bit more information about your experiences with WebRPG?

You people could very seriously consider Never Winter Nights, with all the add ons and the huge fan created patch characters have never been "better looking" there a genuine Role Players int their and you can get involve3d with an online group that meeets every so often. It isn't all MMORG style persistant worlds (even though there are a few out there.) and its just so easy with almost everything you have to do being a point and click away... Ofcource it is d20 though

I have heard some good things about NWN (Never Winter Nights), but there is a great deal I don't know about it. . . .

    Is NWN turn based?

Does it support things beyond fantasy?

Does it support powers like tunneling?

    Theoretically but not practically.

    Theoretically yes, just remember it's rooted in d20 / 3rd Edition D&D.

Kinda, only if module builder puts in a considerable amount of work. If you're familiar with 3rd Edition D&D for example there is nothing akin to the Dimension Door spell.
