    SPD Chart Poll Follow-up

Okay, so one question arose about the variability of SPD among super-teams. So this poll doesn't ask for your average or such but rather the spread. As there are too many numerical possibilities and the poll will be, I feel, ill-voted if I ask for standard deviations, I am making the poll fairly broad. But please do post the actual spread if you don't mind.

The game I'm GMing, the spread is: 9 (actually 8+1 floating SPD point),7, 6/5 (this player has multiforms, and most are 5+1 floating SPD point), 5, 4

My players mostly share the same SPD number. They range from 4-6.

    Re: SPD Chart Poll Follow-up

Almost every character in my campaigns has a SPD of 4-6, with most of them leaning toward 4. However, this is due to character concept and player preference. When Descant takes over, I have a character with an 8 SPD, and another with a 3 (unless he's enraged, then it's 6). Villains' SPDs vary quite a bit, ranging from 2-9, but with most falling near the player characters.

Ditto for Dark Champions & Fantasy Hero but for full color it is more like 4.5 to 7 SPD (Slow bricks are 4 but most bricks start to hedge up to 5).

    4-9

Was proud of my players, a few weeks ago they ran into Ricochet, who boosted their SPD's with an invisable Aid, thinking they would be out of END long before post phase 12. They figured out what was happening, even though not by who, and took extra REC's.

Next November all of you will go to the polls: you'll stand there in the polling place and make a decision. I think when you make that decision. it might be well if you would ask yourself, is Osama bin Laden still dead?

Oohh! I gotta try that! Boosting everyone's SPD as an attack so they burn END quicker. Very clever...

And there's only one way to find out if my players are as clever (or as lucky, a Recovery puts you at 0 DCV you know) as yours.

Boosting peoples spd as a attack? i am obviously not seeing this right

they can waste there exta actions recovering, depending on the spd level of there current opponent. ie waste only the phases the other guy cant attack, hell you can abort to dodge, or even better flying dodge.

Accusation...Hero 5, Fred, a mega-scale step in the wrong direction.

Evidence... Regen, instant change, mega-scale, shape shift, multi form, duplication, multiple power-attacks, flying dodge....

Well you could use a drowning attack and then boost their SPD

    Metagaming

2 heroes fly at the same velocity one spd 12 the other spd 1, spd 12 uses 12 times the end of spd 1 even at non combat speeds.

    silly example, but silly anyway.

    Re: SPD Chart Poll Follow-up

    SPDs on our team: 4, 4, 5, 5, 5, 5+1, 6, 7*, 9

Average SPD is thus 5.5; 5.6 if variable-SPD character is at 6 SPD. (The GMs are encouraging the player to make this character SPD 6 full time.)

*Our SPD 7 character only plays about once a year and is included only in the interest of full disclosure. W/O this character the team average SPD is 5.37 or 5.5 if variable-SPD character is at 6 SPD.

    Re: SPD Chart Poll Follow-up

Going on a tangent in my own thread - but what do you guys in general think about variable SPOs? SPDs where you have a floating phase you can take or otherwise your SPD can be varied from turn to turn or the like? I have mixed feelings. I like it as a variation and I don't mind +1 (someone in my game wanted to do +2 and I shot it down, although I think I allowed that for ONE specific multiform for a player, and that multiform is one of those "only used when the going is really tough" as it can be a little abusive, although it does require assistance of at least one other PC to be used effectively). But greater variations and things which start to make the SPD chart feel too random, no, I think it detracts from the tactical elements of te game. That's KIND of a rehash of many other threads on SPD, but I'm curious more specifically on how people feel about the variable SPD thing.

By the way, Trebuchet, I get the impression your games are similar in many ways to ours, at least in terms of how you guys seem to use HERO rules. Hope to get to your part of the US someday and play with you, if you guys happen to have an open seat at the time.

My current game has three at speed 6 and the other 8 have speed 5.(Note that includes inactive characters.) Works well those who have speed 6 only have it as part of their concept.

My old game had 2 speed 5, one speed 7 and 4 speed 6. This was ok, but harder to use premade characters.

I'm not actually fond of variable SPD characters; which is one of the reasons we're encouraging our only variable-SPD PC to just go straight SPD 6. (He virtually always uses the extra SPD anyway.) The same player is currently designing a Multiform or Shapechanging character with several different SPDs. I don't yet know if we'll permit that.

Funny thing, Zorn. Mentor and I were just discussing this morning the exact same thing; that your philosophy towards Hero and Champions seemed pretty compatible with our approach. Great minds think alike, I guess.
