The setting I'm designing will be about 400 years into the future. No manned interstellar flight, probes haven't found anything around nearby stars worth sending people to, as well as the difficulties thereof.
Space habitats, ranging from "agroids" (agricultural asteroids), up to great O'neill habitats, will be quite common: any malcontent ethnic, religious, or other group can head out and build a station, whether it be in the trojan archipelagos, or the solitude of deep interplanetary space. In addition to the groundside settlments and arcologies, this will create a diversity of cultures like that of a space opera.
No aliens, but there will be 'uplifted' animals, as well as transhumans who, at least in body, can hardly be called human. Oh, and no psionics, FTL, AI, or rubber science.
Earth will be quite vestigial and powerless. It has internalized and introverted. In some areas, 'ecocracys' hold power, zelously restoring land that has been despoiled by humans to its original state.
I think it will be quite an intersting setting, great to game in. I will try to post a few example societies and organizations, so you can get an idea of the feel. inspirations include the Mars Trilogy, This Alien Shore by C.S. Friedman (a great read, and an interesting, well-designed setting. Features a fascinating "brainware" concept, I'm going to use it) Transhuman Space, and some others I can't remember right now.
