Mental Defense and Mental Paralysis (Entangle)

I am a little confused on the interaction of Mental DEF and the Mental Paralysis variant of Entange.

Although it is typically bought BOECV (Mental DEF applies?!), how does the mental DEF apply?

It is my recollection that the text in 5E states that the only real affect on the Entangle for Mental DEF would be if the 1/2 lim "Mental DEF adds to EGO" is bought. Otherwise, no effect.

Or, is the entangle reduced by Mental DEF? If so, by how much?
