A little help making an Ankylosaur figure...

Hi gang, hoping you can all give me some pointers on making some conversions/mods for my Champions game. Currently I'd like to mod up an Ankylosaur figure:

    Ankylosaur Picture

I saw Redmenace's excellent conversion using a Colossus base figure, a Space Marine Backpack from Warhammer 40K, a little putty, and Scorpion's tail. The part I can't figure out is how he modified the head of Colossus to look like it does (not sure what got filed off and what got puttied).

Here's Redmenace's Ankylosaur Conversion for reference...

This defintiely makes a nice Ankylosaur, but I like to be different... I'm thinking of using The Rhino, adding a Scorpion's tail, possibly using a similar backback as Redmenace did, or making one of my own with putty... but, I'm a bit stuck on the head. Any suggestions out there? Also, I'm new at moding HeroClix figures, are there any tips for proper sanding/filing off of details?

    Thanks!
    Keith

P.S. Going to have to pick Redmenace's and Proditor's heads on their other Champions conversions as well. Really nice stuff!
P.S.S. How the heck do you embed images on this board? Can you only do it as an attachment?

Heh. Great minds do think alike. My Ankylosaur is also off of a Rhino base. My guess as to the head is that he probably did what I'm in the process of doing, he sculpted it from putty. Stuff I used to make only from thin styrene I now routinely make out of putty since it's faster and once you get really used to it, requires less overall work.

If you are using Hero-Clix, how about a Crimson Dynamo head? Looks like it would work well as a starting point.

That probably is a good base, but IIRC, CD has a tiny head in comparison. I'm going off memory though so I could just be blowing smoke here.

Either as an attachement, or you have to upload the image elsewhere on the web and link to it with an HTML img tag.

No, I don't think you are off base there Proditor. The Crimson Dynamo head is a bit smaller, especially when compared to the Rhino's larger body (Colossus is only slightly larger than most, but the Hulk, Rhino and a few others are just huge). I was wondering if a Space Marine helmet from 40K might make a decent base, but the shape seems a bit wrong. What do you think?

Also, is your Ankylosaur finished Proditor? Can we see a pic?

Why not shave off the horns and use some sculpy to add minor details?

I think I'm gonna "cheat" on the head and "just" make the whole faceplate/antenna configuration out of putty. I already did what Sketchpad suggested and shaved off the horns, I just need to get two things together to do the sculpting. Time. Motivation. I also removed the feet at about the ankles so that I could get something that looked power armor bootish and not metal rhino hoofish. No pics yet, the Mom-in-law has the camera again.

Also, I'm going to try a REALLY out there idea on another thread so keep watching guys as I'm going to want everyone's input. (This will make sense soon. Promise.)

Looking forward to seeing the next project Proditor. Send me a PM to let me know about the new thread once you start it, would you?

Also, I might have found a secondary alternative base for the head. I was browsing through my cannon fodder collection, I mean bits box, last evening, and the Brainiac figure actually might make a good base for the head. The sides would need to be fleshed out a bit, and the prongs on the front of his helmet would need to be added, but otherwise it's a good match for the face plate I think.

Also, I think you'll find that you can use Colossus' feet as decent replacements for the hoof feet of the rhino. His feet are actually in almost the smae position, you just need to use Colossus right foot for Rhino's left and Colossus left foot for the Rhino's right.

Re: A little help making an Ankylosaur figure...

Sorry about joining the party so late but I've been off the boards for a while.

The Ankylosaur head is built on a Collosus head.

1.) The hair was sanded down a bit so that the "side plates" of Ankylosaur could fall back away from the face without interferance. Proditor's guess is right, I just sculpted them till they looked right.

2.) The nose and mouth were sanded down a little then covered in whitestuff. The whitestuff was formed into a half oval to make the lower half of the face.

3.) I let it harden then sanded it down and was going to get it closer to the lesser chin look of the original but I just liked the way it looked.

For advice on modding, you've got to get on Heroclix Realms boards. Its the best collection of helpful individuals I know of.

Actually Redmenace, I am on the HCRealms boards. You can find my there under the nickname "Myrlyn". I've been trying to read up on the tips folks have already made there, but the volume is staggering and I've had some trouble finding a nice mod FAQ.
