I'm probably stating the obvious, but keep in mind that many HeroClix figs are cast in colored plastic -- Hulk is made from green plastic, Spidey from red, and so forth... so you'll never get the color off of them!

Pour about an inch of brake fluid or Pine-sol into a glass container. Soak the figure in the brake fluid for about a half hour (no longer! -- brake fluid isn't supposed to melt plastic, but why take chances?). Take an old stiff-bristle toothbrush and some liquid dish soap and scrub it under warm water. Rinse and repeat if necessary.

Let your figure sit for at least 24 hours after you've removed the paint before you prime him.

I had no luck with either Pine Sol or Brake Fluid for the HeroClix figures despite having great results with both for metal figures and plenty of good luck using brake fluid on plastic figures. There is something about the HeroClix paint that is just really resistant! I did find one thing that managed to work well though - Acetone. Careful, this is strong stuff! I use a masonry jar with enough Acetone inside to submerge the figure. I drop the figure in and swirl the jar a few times. Just a few seconds in the acetone is enough to remove a ton of paint. I then remove the figure, and brush it down with a toothbrush under some lukewarm water, periodically dipping the brush in the acetone.

Over exposure to the acetone will eventually break down the figure, as will (strangely) using cold water and acetone on the figure at the same time. It does work very well though and if done properly does NOT damage the figure.

P.S. I'm attaching a scan of a few X-men figures I've used this stripping technique upon so you can see the results. If you look closely, you'll notice that there is still a little paint in the crevaces that resisted this technique as well.

You know what, I did not know that. So it wasn't obvious to me! Thanks for clueing me in. One of the figures I had the most trouble with was She-Hulk, is she cast in green? But all the figures gave me trouble so it wasn't only that.

Acetone looks good, might try that too. Thanks everyone. Have my measley rep.

    Hurm...

I just realized that the board poll voting may not go the way I envisioned. From what I can see, I can make the vote public or private, but the one bit I can't hide are the current standings. My preference would be to hide those until the voting is over and then show them at the end. No chance of anyone caring about the standings until it's all done that way. Since I'm pretty sure I can't do that (And I should have checked it earlier) I'm leaning heavily to public voting as a self checking system. Thoughts?

I would be okay, and I think others would, if you just privately collected the votes and gave the result at the end. If, by some odd chance, anyone challenged the results you'd have the record and could disclose.

I'm cool with you collecting them privately. You've allready waived yourself from the competition so why not?

Well, I'd collect the modding votes privately, via PM. It was the general one I wanted to do as a poll. Everyone would just vote for what they liked. But, I wanted the results to be hidden until the end when it would reveal. Maybe it's okay to just have a public vote on it? There is a small chance of some jerrymandering, but not enough to worry about I think since the entire board vote only has the same "oomph" as one artist's vote and is really only final arbiter on the Honorable mention category. I'll mull it a little more and I seriously appreciate the trust you guys have in me to just collect all the votes.

Just a friendly reminder that we are at the half way point for entries. Ya'll have a little over 2 weeks to go, so get to it so I can see some mods to envy.

    Here is my entry.

Gargoyle, by original Champions artist and member of the very first Champs campaign, Mark Williams.

Note, this is the Champions 2nd and third edition version as Mark Williams drew him not the modified design from the comic.

    Awesome work Redmenace!

Contest update: Houston we have a problem. Not with the contest per se, but potentially with the end date. My computer is dead. Dead, dead, dead. Thankfully I can occasionally log in from other places. But after some 500 odd dollars in repairs, I'm not seeing a light at the end of the tunnel yet. If all goes well, I'll be up and running this weekend and things will proceed as normal. If not...well, I guess I'd extend the contest by a week and find some way to make the end date a hard fast October 31st.

As I continue along the process of trying to get back online, I'll post updates here if needed.

First things first... Another great mod Redmenace! You've set the bar for this contest as I expected you might.

Proditor, very sorry to hear about your computer. I've lost a drive or two before, and know how long it can take to recover everything. In my case, the delay would work out well and I would appreciate a little extra time to work on a conversion. Like I mentioned before, while I've got lots of ideas, time has been limited in quantity. The light is at the end of the tunnel though. It would be nice to put something together for no other reason than to get the feedback (remember, I'm a newbie!).

Let us know if the 31st works Proditor, otherwise, I'll look forward to seeing everyone else's entries.

A suggestion: maybe you could do a "Fan Choice Award" kind of thing for those of us not involved in the contest. Maybe set it up after you've tabulated the general votes but before you posted the results (to avoid bias). Not sure what kind of reward you could give...maybe the right to post "2004 Fan Choice Award" in thier sig. This might not be a great idea, but it would give us non-artistic types a chance to share in the process (well, sort of).
