The New Circle

    The New Circle

The Concept: Other than the player characters, who is out there fighting Demon and the Arcane Adversaries? OK, they do fight each-other, and the Council is around, but who else?

Until Allies 5th Ed. Is released, I present the New Circle. This thread will contain Mystic Characters, most of them 350 points, most of them tribute characters, for use as allies of the PCs, quick PCs, or enemies for Villain campaigns. Where I can, I will suggest ways of boosting their power levels for those times when you really need a high powered ally. And so without further ado, the first of the New Circle:

His childhood was not easy, and his apprenticeship under The Master was often painful. Still, growing up within the Circle taught Jack more of the world of magic than most men would ever know, and gave him hints as to the truth behind his own powers. He lives by a heroic code that seems to be part of him at almost a genetic level. He does not lie, steal, break his freely given word, or turn his back on those in need. When not using his powers to fight mystical threats, he heals those he can at free clinics and in those emergency rooms where his help will be accepte. He earns a reasonable living from rewards for those criminals he is able to capture and from using his powers to perform contract services. Jack does not maintain a secret identity, as his almost compulsive honesty would make such a thing impossible. Rather than attempt to lie, Jack will simply remain silent when pressed on issues about which he does not wish to speak.

Quote:“It is time for you to make a choice.” “That was not the right choice.” “You’re welcome. I’m glad I could help.”

Background: Gwen Westlake rocked, and wept, the infant cradled to her breast. Arthur spoke to her, desperate, angry, half-mad.

“Gwen, please, give me the baby.”

“He wants his mommy Arthur! He wants his mommy!” The pain in Gwen’s voice cut into her husband. He held out his arms, trying, gently, to take the body of his dead child from her.

Time seemed to stop.

In a place on no map drawn by human hand, a being out of legend looked down upon his half-mortal son. The child’s mother had not survived, and no child of mortal woman born could hope to thrive in this place. The being reached out, and found a single teardrop moment of time. He placed his son within the tear, and let him fall away.

Time rushed forward, and in Arthur’s arms the child opened wide sapphire eyes and began to wail.

Five years later, in Central Park, NY, an old Japanese man gently held the shoulders of a perfect young boy, and looked into strange sapphire eyes. The old man spoke to the boy’s father.

“Who told you of us?”

“We … we didn’t know what to do. Jack is a wonderful child, but we can’t control him! He’s so strong, and he can do things that no one should be able to do. I read about you, and I begged until I got a meeting with the Sentinels. They told me how to find you. Please, can you help?”

The old man smiled. “I will teach your son.”

Twenty years later, in an alleyway in Haven, Ohio, a woman screamed. The Demon-Bound smiled wide. It loved to hear them scream. It moved forward, treasuring the terror in the woman’s eyes. It was surprised when hands, iron hard, grabbed its bat-like wings, and more surprised when they were torn away. The Demon-Bound’s last sight was a pair of sapphire eyes and a flash of white-hot fire.

Two years ago a young mother sat with her daughter, smiling, as the news showed a glowing man fighting a monster. Her daughter could not take her eyes from the screen.

“Is that him? Is that the Legend?”

“Yes honey, yes it is.”

“Tell me again. Tell me how he saved you.”
Since his debut as a Hero, Legend has served as an agent of both The Circle and the Council, as well as seeking out and opposing Supernatural Evil on his own. Both Demon and The Crowns of Krym have become regular opponents.

Powers/Tactics: The Magic of the Land of Legends burns in Jack Westlake’s body, and may be released for a wide variety of effects. He has mastered the secrets of Flight (both highly maneuverable air-walking and supersonic straight line bursts that can take him anywhere in the world in minutes), bolstering the power of his own body, healing himself and others, seeing that which others never see, releasing blasts of powerful Divine Magic, and assuming a near-indestructible ghost-like form. He has even demonstrated the ability to “blow out” the magic of others like a man blowing out a candle. Against most foes he will fight much like a standard brick, moving in and pounding away. He might attempt to use his Legendary Strength to quickly overwhelm an opponent, but will rarely be able to call on it more than once or twice in a single combat. If a powerful magical foe is occupied, he might spend a few phases attempting to dispel their most obvious powers. Jack is a Hero, but he lacks a code versus killing; he would never kill a foe whom he believed could be reformed or contained, but some forms of madness are too deep to heal.

Campaign Use: Superman, in a watered down form and with the serial numbers filed off. Legend is designed on 350 points to be used as a player character. Boosts to defenses and raw power would be one logical expnsion of the character, and his skill set could use extending as well. Jack is one of the natural leaders of the New Circle.

Wow, I love Legend. He will make an absolutely perfect NPC in a mystic-oriented campaign and, what a coincedence, I just happen to be starting such a campaign.....

    Thanks,

Once he has done so, he will call upon the correct magical device to exploit those weaknesses. Despite his grating personality, the Night Hunter has made dozens of friends throughout the mystic world. His boasting can be oddly entertaining under the right circumstances, and he is a very good customer.

Quote:“Alright punk, now you’re up against me, the Night Hunter, and I’ve got a Holy Water Grenade with your True Name on it!”

Background: The Ulvonshki sniggered as it closed on its victim. Another Vampire Hunting fool! Smiling to display its razor sharp fangs the monster leaped … and screamed! The hunter was wearing his jacket backwards! How had he known!?!

The hunter turned. “I was right. You’re no Vamp.”

Recovering itself, drawing a pistol, the Ulvonshki snarled. “A Turned Coat won’t turn a bullet!” It fired, but the hunter was already moving, ducking and rolling, bringing out an Ash Wood club!

“Kiss my sacred ash, Ulvonshki!”

After beating the creature to death with the ash wood club, the hunter carefully stuffed its mouth with holy wafers soaked in duck eggs and then put a paper rose in each of its ears. “Monsters” the hunter growled, then took a collapsible cart out of his back pack.

The body was ready for a cross-roads burial.

Many years before, Frank and Barbara Burton walked from the Grove Cinema with their six year old son. Bobby gleefully repeated the poorly dubbed dialog of “El Santo versus the Vampire Women” to his bemused parents. He’d loved the movie, with its masked hero battling vampires in an oddly affluent Mexico. His mother was less amused. “I didn’t think it was good” were her last words, just before the monsters came.

As he grew up, Bob Burton never knew why the monsters had left him alive after taking his parents. In his late teens and early twenties he traveled the world asking that question, at first using the last of his minimal inheritance, later using the money he made from the sale of his semi-autobiographical books of horror and madness. Through luck more than talent, the books were a hit. In his travels Bob studied many languages and took up weight training and all manner of athletics, attaining near-Olympic levels of overall fitness. At twenty-three Bob learned of an old man in Central Park, leader of a group of heroes, who might know the answers Bob sought.

The Master taught Bob much, awakening a great skill at magic that Bob had never known he possessed. Bob excelled beyond all but the greatest of the Master’s students in the arts of Lesser Precognition, Alchemy, Lesser Summoning and the Enchantment of magical items. Bob added books on a hundred monsters to his ever-growing library, and purchased a home to store it. He filled the house with his minor magical treasures as well, and mastered the art of calling them to him even from a distance. It was on a stormy night in the library of that home that Bob chose to embrace his destiny.

While typing furiously on his next book, Bob’s mystic senses warned him of danger. Looking out into the darkness, Bob saw something that shook him to his core! There, in the woods, stood the mighty El Santo himself! Santo bravely vied against a creature part-man and part snake, a creature that even as Bob watched struck a blow against Santo that sent him hurling through Bob’s picture window! Not thinking of the danger, Bob charged out and confronted the beast! His keen mage sight instantly assessing the creature, Bob know that sunlight would cause it great harm, and so called forth his Solar Flash Light to drive it away! The creature burned and fled, and Bob looked down upon his childhood hero amid the ruins of the library, even now recovering. Helping El Santo to his feet, Bob knew what he must do!

“Monsters are a cowardly and superstitious lot. I shall become … a Masked Wrestler!”

The rest is history.

Powers/Tactics: The Night Hunter is not a front line combatant; indeed, in front line combat he is either very effective or very probably down, with little space between those options. His main role is to act as the team investigator and tactician, and to come up with those minor items and powers that are needed to take down a foe. His Mage Sight is both Discriminatory and Analytical, allowing him to almost instantly know of any mystically based weaknesses of a given foe, especially when paired with his long list of Occult Knowledge Skills. His list of minor magic items is virtually endless, and the only way to stop him from pulling them forth from his pockets would be to strip and bind him, or to destroy the stocks he keeps in his home. As the items are powered by the Night Hunter’s own arcane energies, most will be useless in the hands of another. Finally, note that the Night Hunter’s magic makes him massively lucky, which is probably why he has lasted this long.

Campaign Use: Campaign Use: Batman. Great names, though depending on how dirty you wanted acronyms, wouldn't it be The Fraternal United Celestial Knights?

With the aid of the heroes of that world, we could take back our own!”

The Priestess considered this seriously, as the Temple of Hera trembled. “No. I understand, but no. There is not enough time for such a project. It would take years to secure their aid.”

“It is the last hope of Athens!” The Queen looked her sister in the eye. “We shall die soon you and I. Skarn shall have our city, and our world. Act now with me, and one day Athens shall be born again. We shall reach out to this world of champions, and place the dream of Athens in one who shares our blood. That dream shall flourish, and she shall gather about her men and women of power. They shall be our vengeance! They shall return here, and free our people!”

Slowly, the Priestess nodded. Together they began the ritual, and the dream of Athens stretched out across the worlds.

Agatha Sorros sat up in her bed. The dream again. So real, more real than the world around her. It would not leave her alone. Shaking, Agatha staggered into her bathroom. The images, nearly as vivid as they had been in sleep, continued to pour through her. I continue to be impressed with your creative homages on this thread. I'd give you more rep if the damn thing would let me.

Every single moment. Alan’s mind has coped with this by locking off vast stretches of his “future memory”, burying those memories deep in his subconscious, though they still intrude. As he copes constantly with intrusive memories of the joys and horrors to come, he often finds it difficult to focus on events in the here and now. However, his powers may grant him moments of extraordinary focus.

Before his rebirth, Alan was a socially inept yet driven young man, obsessed with divination, magic, and probability, the perfect recruit for an organization like Demon. Since his rebirth, Alan has lived in worlds ruled by the Devil’s Advocates, Takafones, the Crowns, and every petty tyrant with a hope for success in Alan’s lifetime. He is unable to hide from the ramifications of every wrong choice, every petty cruelty or misstep. The combination of his Speedster Martial Arts and VPP allows him to pull off a range of extraordinary power stunts, limited only by what you consider permissible in your campaign.

Campaign Use: Always is a walking plot seed. If he has “seen” an event involving the players, and he thinks he can help, he is sure to seek them out. His memories of alternate futures can be used to guide heroes, or to guide them incorrectly if the memories are of the wrong future. Powering him up means adding overall levels, HTH combat levels, and defenses. Adding a first rate discriminatory Danger Sense would be appropriate. The Pool could be boosted, but a great power boost could be had just by allowing Mega-scale and other stop-sign powers to be added to Alan’s Hand Attacks. Allowing him to extend his time effects to others would greatly enhance his powers. Powering him down would involve folding the points from the Speedster Martial Arts into the pool, switching the pool for a MP, or both.
